A LEXICON OF EXPLORATION GEOCHEMISTRY

" Ini t i a1 eval uati on of the regional patterns comprised recognition of grossly anomalous locations within a complex geochemical 1 andscape. Manipulation of these data using mu1 t ivar ia te s t a t i s t i c s was he1 pful . Application of select ive extraction techniques to the stream sediment sampl es provided a more effective approach. Speciation was readily achieved between metals derived by c l a s t i c and hydromorphic dispersion, respectively. Data re1 ated to cl a s t i c disperion processes have a simple distribution in which a single threshold can be used to distinguish anoma- lous samples, related to . the special ised granites, from a large, uniform background population. "

Try explaining that to your gir l friend or translating i t into Chinese with a pocket distionary. Plain speech would be preferable b u t the jargon developed gradually, appears necessary and i s here to stay.

I believe we need a lexicon of exploration geochemistry containing defini- tions ( in English) and equivalent words in a t leas t French, Spanish, German and Russian. Communication problems can be real ly bad as I discovered personally working in several countries and i s a daily d i f f icu l ty here in Canada when we operate o f f i c i a l ly in both French and English.

I am wi 11 ing to p u t th is together and request your support. Words for inclusion, definit ions and word equivalents in other languages should be sent to me, care of the Association's permanent address in Rexdale. I will be es- tab1 ishing a mu1 t i -1 i ngual commi t t ee to review submissions and will a i r conten- tious ~ o i n t s here in the newsletter.

GOLD 82 - MAY 24-28, 1982, Salisbury

This symposium i s being organized by the Geological Society of Zimbabwe, w i t h the support of the Geology, Metallurgy and Mining Subs.Committee of the Scient i f ic Counci 1 of Zimbabwe.

The five sections cover the distribution of gold in crustal rocks, i t s transport, mineral deposi t types and go1 d exploration. The program i ncl udes both pre-and post-symposium f ie ld excursions. Should any member wish to submit an abstract of a paper for presentation the deadline for receipt i s December 1 , 1981.

Copies of the f i r s t information circular are availble from:

The Organizing Secretary, Gold 82 Ins t i tu te of Mining Research P.O.Box MP 167 Mount Pleasant, Sal isbury, ZIMBABWE

PROCEEDINGS OF GOLD'81

As you will have read in Stan Hoffman's report on the April regional symposium i n Vancouver, published in l a s t Junes' Newsletter, the meeting was an overwhelming success. The joi n t AEG-GAC Cordi 1 leran Division Organi zing Comrni t t ee have decided to publish the proceedings themselves in Vancouver. As a co-sponsor the Association will receive suff ic ient copies for a l l members and subsequent sales through the Toronto off ice.

Publication i s expected in early 1982 and Council has decided tha t a free dis t r ibut ion should be made to a l l 1982 members of the Association. The d i s t r i - bution i s a welcome benefit from the success of Gold'81, which due to the effor ts of the Organizing Committee, the reputation of the speakers, and the topical i ty of the subject enjoved a registration of about twice that originally anticipated. Counci 1 hopes tha t the Association can continue to provide Symposi um proceedings to i t s members, e i ther through the Journal or by such publishing ventures. However, Council also wishes to point out that t h i s i s an extraordinary event a f t e r an extra successful meeting , the distribution only a p ~ l ies to 1982 members, subsequent copies will have to be purchased a t the discounted rate available to Association members.

1982 MEMBERSHIP LIST

To coincide with the biennial International Geochemical Exploration Symposia a new 1982 membership 1 i s t wi 11 be published and distributed with the March 1982 Newsletter.

Members are asked to pay particular attention to ensuring the address, postal \

i codes, and telephone numbers are correct on the i r 1982 dues notices. If no further information i s provided the membership l i s t detai ls will be the same as on the dues no ti ces .

1981 DUES - SOME STILL OUTSTANDING !

Yes, there are s t i l l some 60 members from 1980 who are on our records as not ye t having paid the i r 1981 dues. You will know who you are, as there i s a 1981 dues reminder enclosed and you have not been receiving the Journal .

Sometimes mail gets lo s t , o r errors occur. Unless we hear from you, e i ther your 1981 dues, or some lead on where your dues may be, your name will be struck off a l l remaining mailing l i s t s before the December Newsletter i s distributed. If you intend to resign, and f o r f e i t the various benefits of membership, the Association would appreciate a l e t t e r of resignation.

FROM THE SECRETARY'S OFFICE - Bob Garrett

I t has come t o the time when we have to ask members for their 1982 dues. You wi 11 find a,'Dues Noti ce enclosed, again as 1 a s t year we have 1 is ted those books tha t are available through the Toronto off ice.

I t i s with pleasure that I draw your attention to the f ac t that the dues remain unchanged a t US $42.50. The continued success of the Journal and every e f f o r t to r u n a ' t i g h t ship ' are allowing us to f ight the ravages of inf lat ion. With the decreasing val ue of money membership i s going to be some 12% cheaper for 1982, and we plan to d ~ s t r i b u t e a new membership l i s t and the proceedings of Gold'8l .

O n the Dues Notice you will see various methods of preferred payment. I t i s eas ies t , and l eas t expensive for the Association to handle cheques drawn on North American banks and International Money Orders. However, these methods of pay- ment may be d i f f i c u l t for some members and we can handle UNESCO coupons and Inter- national Postal Orders. If you believe that your method of payment may re su l t in handling charges in Canada please include them with your payment, otherwise the Association may only f ina l ly receive a small uar t of your dues payment. I f i t helps some members to pay direct ly through a bank the Association's account i s with:

The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce Rexdale and Is1 ington Branch, 2267 Islington Avenue, Rexdale, Ontario M9W 3W7, Canada

Branch Transit No. - 9822

Deposit Account No. - US $ 02-00018

If you pay th is way through your bank please s t i l l return your Dues Notice to Toronto with a record of the originating bank, any draf t number they may provide, and the date of the transaction. This allows the office to match the bank statements i n Toronto to the members correctly.

1

Some members are lucky to have a generous employer who pays the i r dues. Occasionally we receive checks for dues and no indication as to whose dues they are . If your dues are paid th i s way please ensure that your dues notice accompa- nies the cheque.

Newsletter No. 37 page 7

Lastly, the due date f o r your Dues i s January 1 , 1982. Your prompt, or e a r l y , payment i s an enormous help to your Association. The Treasurer enjoys Christmas and New Year f a r be t t e r i f he knows t h a t the majority of dues are in by mid December. The Association pays f o r the 1982 Journal issues f o r i t s members i n advance. The f a c t t ha t your name i s on the f i r s t l i s t t h a t goes t o Elsevier ensures the uninterrupted delivery of the Journal to you.

NOMINATIONS OF COUNCILLORS FOR 1982/4

In order t o carr-y out e lec t ions f o r Ordinary Councillors f o r 1982-84 the b a l l o t papers wil l have t o be mailed w i t h the December Newsletter.

The Association requires some e igh t nominees f o r the next e lec t ion . The nominations procedure i s outl ined in Section 4.04 of the By-Laws. Briefly, any s i x Voting Members can nominate a Voting Member, who should s ign i fy h i s wil l ing- ness t o serve in writ ing t o Council, o r Council can nominate Voting Members who a r e wi l l ing t o l e t t h e i r names stand. I f you wish t o nominate anyone please organize the nomination and forward i t t o the Secretary as soon as possible.
