NO. 362 S E R V I C E B U L L E T I N JULY

The introduction of the diesel engine in the Studebaker truck line brings with itseveral important changes in the Warranty and Inspection Services. For example:It is customary for many truck manufacturers to offer one or more engine as-semblies, manufactured by someone other than themselves, as optional power plantsto be installed in their chassis at t h e time of production. It is also customaryin such cases for the engine manufacturer to assume the responsibility of pro-viding Warranty inspections, Warranty replacement of defective parts, and afterWarranty service parts and repairs through their authorized dealers.

Since the diesel engine is an optional power plant in the Studebaker truck, wewill follow the established practice whereby the chassis and cab components arewarranted by Studebaker-Packard and the diesel engine is warranted by the DetroitDiesel Engine Division of General Motors. Parts installed on the diesel engineby us at the time of production such as fan belts, generator belts, generator, fan blade assembly and air cleaners are covered by the Studebaker-Packard war-ranty.

A special Owner's Service Policy is provided for the diesel truck (SeeIllustration). It contains the Studebaker-Packard Corporation Warranty(a) and the Detroit Diesel Engine Division Warranty (b), and three servicecoupons.

One coupon (c) is for the usual 1,000 mile inspection service to be provided bythe Studebaker dealer. The second coupon (d) is for an engine "Start Up " in-spection to be performed by the Detroit Diesel Engine Division or one of itsauthorized representatives. The third coupon (e) is for a "Performance In-spection" also to be performed by the Detroit Diesel Engine Division or itsauthorized agents after the vehicle has been in service for 30-60 days or10,000 miles. Both engine inspections will be made without charge to thedealer or owner upon surrendering the appropriate coupon.

The engine "Start Up" inspection can be made prior to, or at the time of retailsale, depending on the selling dealer's decision. Where the owner's name andaddress are known at the time of production the Detroit Diesel Engine Divisionwill automatically arrange to perform the "Start Up" inspection. Where thevehicle is produced for dealer inventory it becomes the responsibility of theselling dealer to arrange the "Start Up" inspection service with the nearestauthorized Detroit Diesel Engine dealer.

There are two brake systems used on the diesel powered trucks. One is avacuum assist hydraulic system; the other is a full air system. The vacuumpump and the air compressor are made by the Bendix-Westinghouse Company andcarrytheirwarranty. Should any repairs be necessary on either the vacuumpump or air compressor during the 12,000 mile - 12 month Warranty period itis recommended they be taken to the nearest Bendix-Westinghouse authorizeddealer. Warranty repairs will be performed without charge by such dealers.
