An extra hook that the current promo- slotted for release in Japan, France, Korea andtional tour has is that it is in support of national Scandinavia.AIDS education, and is being sponsored byJulius Schmid, the manufacturer of Sheik con-doms.

Juno ratings ... ? I haven't heard any newsat press time about the ratings for this year'sJunos, but I'll bet they'll be lower than lastyear. I'm guessing somewhere just above themillion mark. Last year 1.6 million viewerstuned into this national jewel. The ratings, inthe last couple of years, have been going thewrong way. (EC: Try opening with a middle ofthe road act. The younger crowd will wait fortheir favourites . . . !)

Now that JW's finally anchored himself, who's best qualified to replace him? I'm bet-ting on RR, who will add a little colour to theold man's operation. (EC: Out of the fryingpan . . . into the fire!)

Shakeouts in radio ... ? Watch for changes, many changes, some shocking and some ex-pected in Vancouver and Toronto radio.

The JUNO AWARDS wereoriginated by Walt Grealis

and Stan Klees onFebruary 23, 1970.

". . the prophets of doom, the messengers of medioc-rity, will be overwhelmed by the new generation ofcompetent, creative, confident artisans, and by allthose preceding generations who have already dem-onstrated their freshness of mind, their talent, andtheir capacity for inspired leadership."

There's a move on to get out of the MAJORmajor markets and into the saner smaller majormarkets. (EC: I'm confused, but I hear whatyou're saying . . . !)Nice guys finish off camera . . . ! What ashame that Mel Shaw, the man who did morethan anyone to get the Juno Awards on televi-sion, was shuffled off -camera to be presentedwith his Walt Grealis Special AchievementAward. A shorter trilogy to Cohen, a couple ofseconds off here and there, and a great industryfigure could have had a memorable and welldeserved minute and a half on camera. (EC: Toquote an on -camera recipient: "To get THATaward, it would be an honour to accept it in aparking lot," and maybe that's next . . . !)

Alberta honours Ronnie King ... ! Whilehis boss and mentor, Mel Shaw, is honoured atthis year's Juno Awards, Ronnie King, whosoared to international stardom with The Stam-peders, gets a little recognition from his homeprovince of Alberta. Ronnie received the AIRAAward of Distinction a couple of weeks ago.Ronnie is still pickin' and his trio are seenregularly on Calgary's Cable 10. (EC: OnceRonnie tasted Sweet City Woman, there was noturning back . . . !)

Women in high places... !I remember a fewyears ago at one of RPM'S 3 Days In Marchcommunication meetings, when we had a panelon Women In The Industry. Joanne Smale,Linda Dawe and a few others mounted a veryimpressive and controversial argument in fa-vour of women having more of a say in theindustry. Well, like many good things, notmuch happened. Not until this year that is. SonyMusic chief Paul Burger brought in Lisa Zbit-new as Director of Artist Marketing, a veryimportant position considering the number ofdirectors and managers who are reporting toher. Bob Jamieson, the new head of BMGMusic Canada, didn't take much time in scout-ing for a Director of Marketing and Promotion. He appointed Carol Wright to the position andher credentials are very impressive. As well,Lou Anne Wheaton gets the nod at Justin Enter-tainment as Director, National Promotion,Publicity and Artist Relations, Jill Snell movesup to the position of Label Manager at IslandRecords and Vicki Walters takes on the impor-tant post of Director of Publishing at TMP TheMusic Publisher. Joanne and Linda can beproud of the work they did in laying the ground-work initially, for more recognition of womenin the industry. (EC: What am I, choppedliver. . . ?)

The story will unfold ... ! I'm really temptedto start telling the story of the missing tributevideo tape. Since no one is willing to take meseriously, I think I'll tell the story and startasking questions. (EC: Maybe a few people willstop taking bows . . . I)

Good point! Good Point . . . ! Somebodyasked me recently how we get all the charts andfaxes and information on record play and salesto do our charts when we don't mention thenames of these people. Well, the answer is thatwe have developed a reputation over the yearsand these people just believe in RPM like some

kind of a bible. We don't have any trouble at all.Strangely enough, it's the retailers who aretroublesome when it comes to helping, but lookat the mess they're in. (EC: The middlename ofretail is "politics" .) A very costly game . .. asthe record companies and artists know!

RECESSION! What recession ... ? Whileeveryone's watching their bosses for tell -talesigns of distress, usually followed by a pink slip... a downtown Toronto hotel is going througha $40 million facelift. (EC: A few record launchparties could lessen the cost . . !)

Get the figures straight... ! The dailies andthe trade press jumped in with both feet tograndstand the financial trouble facing A&A.Some of the figures and facts quoted are wayout of wack. If the figures and facts are forpublic record, wouldn't it be proper to doublecheck rather then run corrections? (EC: Theydon't teach that at journalism school . . . !)

Another retail opening ... ? Is it true that agiant retailer has taken over a huge health clubin the Scarborough Town Centre, which will beturned into a record store? (EC: That mall needsa good record store . . . !)

Time marches on . . . ! Just about a monthfrom now the industry will take a sharp turn andthere will be some real changes. Ellie haslooked into her crystal ball and told me that thenews will be updated, and shocking. (EC:HaveI ever been wrong . . . ?)

The Hip is it! It appears The Tragically Hip'snew album, Road Apples, is going to be one ofthis year's biggest. It has already surpassed thepeak of their previous album. Road Applesjumps all the way to No. 10 in just its secondweek. That's one spot higher than Up To Herepeaked last year. The ladies turn. Last week I asked you toname the one -name male artists who've hitNo. 1. It only seems fair to test your powers ofrecall and find out how many one -name femaleartists you can name who've hit No. 1 (there areseven of them).

Another number one .. ! Mariah Carey hasher second No. 1 hit as Someday tops the HitTracks chart. Vision Of Love was at No. 1 forfour weeks last year. Her other release, LoveTakes Time, just missed as it peaked at No. 2.

An album boost as well. Someday's widecrossover appeal (also Top ten AC and Top 10Dance), has helped Mariah Carey's self -titleddebut album. In its 31st week, it climbs toNo. 2 on the Albums chart, the highest it hasever been.

New in the Top 20 ... Enigma hits No. 1 onthe Dance chart with Sadeness, it also enters theTop 20 on the Hit Tracks chart, bulleting toNo. 18. World On Edge is enjoying big successwith Only The Lonely climbing to No. 16. Theirdebut release, Still Beating, peaked at No. 31.However, Londonbeat has the biggest jumpinto the Top 20 as I've Been Thinking Of Youjumps 21 places to No. 14.

Is that a law degree? It's getting tougher totell the artists without a decoder ring. There'sTimmy T, Stevie B, Stevie V, MCJ & Cool G,R.E.M., AC/DC, ZZ, and C&C. The only way tokeep track of them all is to load them into myIBM AT ASAP!

How many did you come up with? Theseven female artists who have hit No. 1 using aone -word name are: Charlene, Cher, Lulu,Madonna, Melanie, Nena, and Tiffany.

    COVER STORY by Alison Mercer

De Keyzer releases Hard Working Man as solo debutI lard Working Man is the WEA debut for gui-tarist/singer/songwriter Jack De Keyzer, amusician who has made an impressive name forhimself in Canada, particularly in Ontariowhere he has earned a substantial followingand established himself as a powerful clubdraw.

De Keyzer was signed close to a year agoafter I lard Working Man was recorded. Cur-rently, the lead single That's The Way, ismaking it's way up RPM's Hit Tracks chart andhas gained a lot of radio airplay.

As well as being one of Eastern Canada'sbest known live acts, De Keyzer is an experi-enced studio musician. He has recorded withhis own bands the Bobcats and the Rock Angelsas well as doing work with such greats as EttaJames, Robert Johnson, Bo Diddley and Ron-nie Hawkins. De Keyzer's list of associationswith musical legends is long, and has earnedhim the reputation of being a musician who"knows a thing or two about the blues." At thispoint in his career, however, De Keyzer ispleased to be solo.

"I'm at the point now where I don't reallywant to be in a band. That's what I used to wantto do, be in a band," he laughs. "Now I have aband, but I'm in charge."

Growing up in Hamilton, De Keyzer be-gan honing his guitar skills in his very earlyteens and soon left school to head out into themusic scene where he began earning a living asa musician at the tender age of fifteen. Hiswriting career started much later, particularlyafter his stint with the Bobcats, which gave himthe taste to write his own material.

When De Keyzer decided that he wantedto make a solo album, he made the choice torecord the album independently and then lookfor a distribution deal.

"I have a problem with spending extraor-dinary amounts of money on an album," saysDe Keyzer, who believes this happens easilyunder the record company wing. "I wanted to

James and 990 HITS inklongterm agreementGary James and Montreal's Top 40 radio sta-tion 990 HITS have signed a contract extensionfor James to host the morning show through1995. James has been at the helm of the showfor two years and is credited with "effectivelydoubling the morning show quarter show houraverage as well as the market share in this timeslot."

On signing, James, a native of Vancouver, quipped. "It should be illegal to feel this good. One day I'm sure management will come totheir senses."

James has worked a variety of formats inmajor markets across Canada. As the station'sSusan Davis points out, James' "mass appealstyle of morning show is based primarily onfast -paced repartee and humour."

Now living in Dorval, a suburb of Mon-treal, James describes Montreal as "a great city... one that I will never leave until I've eaten inevery restaurant."

go into the studio and have more creative con-trol and cost control." De Keyzer hooked upwith WEA just under a year ago after the albumwas completed.

Hard Working Man features thirteen ofDe Keyzer's own songs which blend elementsof the blues, country, R&B and traditional rock.It was produced by (former David Bowie/IggyPop guitarist) Stacey Heydon and DannyGreenspoon, who produced Spirit Of The West. Many of the tracks feature the talents of DeKeyzer's friends and fellow musicians, includ-ing Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor of Blue Rodeo,Jerome Godboo of the Phantoms and the lateStan Szelest of The Band.

Despite the fact that the De Keyzer namehas been well known for years now, heacknowledges there is a stigma about artistswho have spent much of their careerplaying theclub circuit. "I've been identified and com-pared with other artists that I have absolutelynothing in common with musically," says DeKeyzer. "Simply because we both played a lotlive and didn't have a record deal." But he hasalways remained calm about the callousness of

McBride appointed MusicDirector -for Energy 95.3Vancouver's newest FM radio station, will goto air on May 31st of this year as Energy 95.3.The station is targeting the under 35 age groupwith emphasis on dance music.

Bill Waddington, General Manager ofSouth Fraser Broadcasting Limited, owners ofthe new station, in commenting on the station'shandle, says "Energy is what Vancouver's newradio station is all about. Energy 95.3 will be a'90s radio station, keeping pace with today'sactive audience."

Waddington has also announced thatMatthew McBride has been appointed MusicDirector of the new station. McBride's nineyears in broadcasting includes six years on theFM band in both Calgary and Vancouver. Hewas the mid -day personality at 97 KISS -FM forthe past two and half years and Assistant MusicDirector for the past year and a half.

South Fraser Broadcasting is based inRichmond, B.C.

Jill Snell appointed IslandCanada Label ManagerJill Snell, an Islander for almost three years, hasbeen promoted to the position of Label Man-ager. Snell replaces Carol Wright, who ismoving to BMG Canada.

Snell moves into the position from that ofmarketing coordinator for Island Records Can-ada. All changes were effective February 28,and Snell will report to Lee Siversides, VicePresident of Island Canada and A &M Records, the label's distributor.

The label has recently moved its offices toA&M headquarters. With the changes in per-sonnel the Island staff stands at three withSilverside, Snell and Doug Caldwell, NationalRadio Promotion Manager.

the industry, mostly by not being around it 100percent of the time. He notes that his motivationhas helped as well.

"When I first got into this I wanted to be arock star," he says. "But I'm past that pointnow. I'm just in it for the music, and really Ialways have been."

De Keyzer's composed confidence hasset him apart from the ferocious hunger of themusic industry. De Keyzer earned his keep andpaid his dues long ago, and Hard Working Manis a culmination of those years of experienceand work. With or without the album, DeKeyzer plays by his own rules and is comfort-able with his accomplishments. The album willnot make or break Jack De Keyzer's career as amusician. That success was established longbefore.

Plans are now in the making for a full-fledged Canadian tour to support HardWorking Man.

Mount Royal's Dufaultsets record straightClaude Dufault, General Manager of Mon-treal's Mount Royal Broadcasting Inc., ownerof CFCF and CFQR radio stations, reports thatall is well and the future looks good for bothstations. Dufault stresses that CFCF and CFQRare "not in any way" part of the CFCF Inc,.group that includes CFCF 12 (TV), QuatreSaisons and CF Cable TV.

The CFCF group is experiencing seriousfinancial difficulties and, unfortunately, thetwo radio stations were being tarred by thesame brush.

Dufault points out that "The radio stationsCFCF 600 (AM and CFQR 92.5 (FM) arewholly -owned and operated by Mount RoyalBroadcasting Inc. and have been since Septem-ber 26, 1988."

Dufault also reveals the signing of a fouryear deal with the Montreal. Expos who will beback on CFCF for a 20th year.

"CFCF/CFQR is growing in leaps andbounds," says Dufault, who continues with,"CFQR is the talk of the town with the hottestmorning show in English Montreal and CFCF isback on track with the Expos, Bobby. Winkles,Buck Rodgers, Dave Van Horne, Ken Single-ton and Elliott Price." Price becomes a full timepartner with Jack Curran on the morning show, handling all sports.

Dion and James lead parade of Juno winners

Aside from Paul Shaffer being a lacklustre andtoo hip a host, a set that resembled a sewer pipewhen seen on the small screen, not very fittingfor CRC -TV's national jewel, the Juno Awardsobviously satisfied the award -hungry Cana-dian record industry. Unfortunately, in theirattempts to make the Junos bigger and hope-fully draw a larger TV audience, this nation-ally -televised showcase for Canada's best inentertainment has become alittle too reflectiveof American music awards. Perhaps a bit ofhumbling parochialism might help.

Nevertheless, there was one importantand comforting factor that hasn't been evidentwith past Juno Awards. The audience, evenwatching at home on the small screen, wasrespectful, vibrant and spontaneous in its ap-preciation of what was going on. This audienceenergy was transmitted to the players on stage,a major accomplishment, rarely seen at anawards show. There was also a few pleasantsurprises; the Tragically Hip taking the awardas Entertainer of the Year and Rita MacNeil

Leonard Cohen displays his Hail Of Fame awardat the recent Juno ceremony In Vancouver.

winning the Top Country Female Juno.It was also satisfying to have a Hall of

Fame inductee with something concrete, in-deed electrifying to say. Leonard Cohen'sappropriate and exquisite reading from hisTower Of Power song was the highlight of theevening. The "trilogy" of three of his works bySuzanne Vega, Aaron Neville and JenniferWarnes was a little lengthy, but nonethelessdynamic, particularly Warnes' version of Co -hen's Joan Of Arc. The musical tribute how-ever, was much better than the meaninglessmeanderings of the siblings of last year's in-ductee.

Performers, for the most part, were bangon in the professional handling of themselves,as were the presenters and winners. It wasrefreshing not to hear the usual dribbling, off-the-cuff inanities by the presenters, althoughMurray McLauchlan took the opportunity tomake a statement of sorts. The winners kepttheir acceptance speeches remarkably shortand, again, very professional.

Sony recording artist Celine Dion, whowon two Junos; Female Vocalist of the Yearand Album (for Unison), displayed the confi-dence of a seasoned and highly professionalartist, both in her performance and acceptance. It was obvious that her album win was a com-plete surprise, accepting with much class andhumility. She certainly solidified her status asan international recording artist of note.

Colin James, whose searing rock per-formance opened the show, and which mayhave turned off some of the more adult viewers, looked like the fresh -faced kid next door. Later,in accepting his Junos for Male Vocalist and, still later, for Song of the Year (for Just CarneBack), still looking fresh -faced, he paid hom-age to his "Mom". When accepting the secondJuno, the cameras picked out his proud "Mom"in the audience, a nice touch.

Another double winner was David Tyson, who brought much needed attention to theCanadian songwriting field. He won honours asSongwriter and as Producer of the year.

Perhaps in an effort to make amends toCanada's country music industry, perform-ances on this year's Junos were heavy on coun-try; Michelle Wright, Blue Rodeo, PrairieOyster, and Sue Medley, all of whom weredefinitely in the refreshing country mode.Medley, however, scored aJuno as Most Prom-ising Female and Blue Rodeo, took home theirthird Juno as Group of the Year. Country win-ners were also afforded their share of the tele-vision spotlight. Rita MacNeil was on tour so

Colin James with his two Junos: Male Vocalistand Single of the Year for Just Came Back.

couldn't be on hand to receive her CountryFemale Vocalist Award, but Prairie Oysterpicked up their Country Group award, andGeorge Fox, who was very stylishly dresseddown, somewhat casually -chic, accepted hisJuno as Male Country Vocalist.

Also showing a high degree of profes-sionalism in their performances were HollyCole, who did a very difficult a cappela num-ber, Alias, and The Northern Pikes. M.C.Hammer, with his posse spilling over the stage, hip -hopped predictably displaying an amazingamount of energy, but not really adding that

much to the show, from a television angle. Hewas also the winner of a Juno in the Interna-tional Album category, which he accepted oncamera.

It was expected that Jane Child wouldhave done much better. Last year, her self -titleddebut album for Warner Bros. sold close to amillion units. Nominated in four categories, she won only in one, for Best Dance Recording.

Another pleasant surprise was the win byThe Leslie Spit Treeo, who brought a little ofthe Queen Street image to the Vancouverawards ceremony. They won in the Most Prom -

Double Juno winner Celine Dlon (FemaleVocalist and Album of the Year for Unison) seenabove performing at the Juno awards.

Attic signs Juno winnersBourne and MacLeodAttic's president Alexander Mair was Johnny -on -the -spot at this year's Juno Awards, signingBourne and MacLeod to a recording contract.Bill Bourne and Alan MacLeod won a JunoSunday evening (March 3) for their album,Dance And Celebrate, which was nominated inthe Best Roots & Traditional Album category.

As Mair points out after winning theirJuno at 3:30 pm on the Sunday, "the contractswere actually signed at 9:45 am the followingTuesday." The signing too place at the Vancou-ver offices of Eric Kagna, attorney for Bourneand MacLeod.

A CD of Dance And Celebrate will bereleased in April with a Toronto showcaseplanned for the same month. A national tour isnow being finalized, and Mair expects Bourneand MacLeod will be featured at every majorfolk festival.

ising Group category. In the Rap category, the shoo-in had to be

and was Maestro Fresh -Wes for his 1989 Atticdebut, Symphony In Effect. In accepting theJuno, the first Canadian on the rap block dis-played a genuine sincerity and obvious respectfor the industry.

    RPM - March 16, 1991 - 9

With the energy buzz from the Van-couver audience, the all-round highs generatedby the performers and the warm, sincere pro-fessionalism of both the presenters and win-ners, this year's Juno Awards, all criticismaside, did much to further Canada's star sys-tem. -Walt Grealis

Warner's Child wins Dance Recording JunoCanadian Jane Child, who in 1990 sold up-wards of a million units with her self -titledWarner Bros debut, won a Juno last week forBest Dance Recording Of The Year for her songDon't Wanna Fall In Love (Knife Feel GoodMix).

Although Child took one Juno home, shewas nominated for four of the awards. As wellas in the dance category, she was up for MostPromising Female Vocalist, Songwriter Of TheYear and Producer Of The Year.

A singer/songwriter/musician, Childgrew up in Toronto where she studied classicalmusic and then made her way onto the contem-porary scene, namely by putting a band to-gether. Eventually her career required that shemove to New York and then to Los Angeles.

It was in Los Angeles in 1988 when Childsigned the deal with Warner Bros., one of manymajor labels that had an interest in her material, but the one that Child felt would be most sup-portive to her needs. Child wrote all the songson the album as well as producing it and doingall the work musically. The album was releasedin October of 1989.

Although the album sold half a million

copies in the U.S. alone, Child never did asupport tour. Not that she didn't have thechance. Child's talents attracted the attentionof many artists and was offered various tourswith prestigious acts, among them MC Ham-mer, but she felt that with only one albumreleased, it would be better to take a pass at thetime.

Currently, Child is working on her nextalbum, which she is hoping will be released inlate August of this year. She is also puttingtogether a band which she will take into thestudio with her and on the road, among therecruits is her brother, Rick, a guitarist who isalso contributing a song to the new project.

Not having performed her material hasleft the artist with a strong desire to hit the road."I'm really looking forward to touring thistime," she says. "The show will be about music, and very much about the band. I won't havedancing girls or a thousand costume changes."

Child says she will also happily play thesmaller sized venues because the intimacy isvery important. "I want people to see my face,I want them to be able to see my fingers move. You can't do that in stadiums."

    PARIS BLACKParis BlackIsba ISCD-2019

Paris Black has created a somewhaterratic style of rock pop with this albumby Integrating the best of each genre. His unusual and heartfelt vocals pro-vide a main punch for the album, alongwith the symmetrical accompaniment. The lead single is Conspiracy, whichfeatures the writing prowess of MichaelBolton, and is already making appear-ances on A/C formats. There is anInteresting melange of songs, even theballads differ in style, for example thestylistic construction duet with ValerieHallman on My Heart Is Still Young andthe more traditional Letting Go. TheParis Black album should appeals topop lovers who need that rougher edge, and could gain healthy airplay on radiostations with the same needs.(CD reviewed) - AM

THE THROBS - Hard RockThe Language Of ThievesAnd VagabondsGeffen DGCD-24316-J

The Throbs provide an intense, moodystyle of rock 'n roll and as the relentlessblack subject matter and psychedelicimage would imply, this is pretty heavystuff. The pleading It's Not The End OfThe World with its frantic piano andbreakneck pace is a good indication ofwhat's to be expected. Dreamin',Honeychild and The Only Way Out arealso tracks that stand way out from thenorm. The Throbs may well pick upsome serious fans hungry for a surpris-ing reconstruction of the metal/rock/psychedelia genre done to the max andvery well. (CD reviewed) - AM

    TWENTY 4th STREET - Dance

    Street MovesJustin Entertainment JED-008-J

A sensation in Europe, Twenty 4thStreet moved to the top of charts withtheir hit I Can't Stand It, a groovy dancetune which is currently enjoying it's sec-ond climb on RPM's Dance trackschart. The album features rapper Cap-tain Hollywood who's socially -con-scious lyrics are a breath of fresh airfrom the all too common mundane lyr-ics of many a dance tune. The music is

not a bombardment of sound, which isalso refreshing. All are rhythmic anddanceable. Aside from the lead single,I Can't Stand It, Whom Do You Trust,Help 'Em Understand and Show MeYour Love Tonight are also excellent.Has proved itself on radio where danceis a focus, and retail sales are following.(CD reviewed) - AM

KEVEN JORDAN -PopNo Sign Of RainColumbia CK 80163-H

Filling the void of Canadian A/C artists,Keven Jordan is heading onto a veryhungry market that, combined with thequality of the album, is sure to burn upnational charts and secure major radioairplay. The title track is the first slottedsingle, is already generating major in-terest at major stations, and the al-bum's many other tracks provide fertileground for more single picking. There IsA Reason, She Lives and the up tempoTrue Believers are all good candidates. The album's sophisticated productionand smooth lyrics by Jordan and co-writer/producer Tim McCauley look asthough they will take No Sign Of Rainthe full nine miles. JONI MITCHELLNight Rlde HomeGeffen GEFSD 24302-J

As always this Mitchell album is a tripthrough the singer's mind. Her very per-sonal and dream-like lyrics are as usualthe main hook to her music and hervocal delivery is an incredible potentelement in the Mitchell appeal. The titletrack features some particularly in-tense singing. The scolding The Wind-fall, Nothing Can Be Done and Ray'sDad's Cadillac are key. Night RideHome will earn some radio airplay butwill do best at retail where loyal Mitchellfans add it to their collection.

    We The LivingJustin Entertainment JED-10-J

This thoughtful band from the eastcoast has already been critically ac-claimed in their hometown of Halifax, and look to be headed for the same inthe rest of the country. They are of thenew school of rockers who are toningdown the genre in terms of noise, but

    - Folk/Rock

building intensity and musical prowess. The opening track Days And Days setsan excellent precedent for the albumincorporating southern rock influencesin the style of a Steve Earle and retain-ing a very palatable Canadian sound.Photographs solidifies the slight coun-try aspects to the music, while tuneslike Man On Pier 21 and the title trackget very free and increase the tempoto a snappier one. Lead singer JohnWesley Chisholm's scratchy voice hasmajor appeal and the band will surelymake a good name for themselves onradio and at retail. (CD reviewed)

DIANE AUSTIN - Children& FRANK TURNERThe Doodle Family StoryA&T Records

There is a large market for children'smusic, but not from a radio program-mer's point of view, with the exceptionof CBC. Retailers however, should betuned into what is available. Parents, shopping for their own needs, just mightdiscover a music pacifier, such as TheDoodle Family Story. Canada, by theway, is a world leader when it comes tomusic. The Doodle Family Story is thestuff that attracts; a story about a littlegirl named Sleepy Doodle and her sis-ter Dipsy Doodle, King Cobra andGhost Song. Just a three -song cas-sette, but enough to entertain or calmlittle terrors into sleepy heads. Call A&Tat 416-821-3111 for more Information.(cassette reviewed) -WG

CARMEN CAMPAGNE - ChildrenUne Voix Pour Les EnfantsOak Street Music OSC 00029-H

This French album will appeal greatly tochildren between the ages of 2 and 9.Providing simple, clear French vocalsUne Voix is ideal for the child and parentwho are learning French, or who wantto begin the process. The music ismodest but very appealing through theamusing anecdotes that Campagnerecounts such as Jean -Guy L'Escargot(the story of a snail's adventures), MonPere M'Envoie Au Marche, La LaineDes Moutons and Un Bon ChocolatChaud. With vocal contributions by

Quebecker Daniel Lavois and the pro-duction talents of Hart Rouge's PaulCampagne, Une Voix would be an edu-cational and delightful addition to anyaudio library where children are con-cerned. Already the album is sellingwell, particularly In Quebec.(Cassette reviewed) - AM

HARRY CONNICK JR. - PopWe Are In LoveColumbia - CK-46146-H

It's about time Connick joined the popmainstream and with this being the yearof adult music, he just might do it. Hecouldn't have picked a better vehiclethan this package of high intensity en-tertainment which he co -produced withMark Shaiman. We get more of Con -nick's boyish vocal chart with this setthen his previously released albums. There's a blues and jazz intimacy thatConnick displays which brings the largeorchestra into play as a cushioningfactor. Very simple melodies, meaning-ful lyrics, pure entertainment. Key arethe title track, A Nightingale SangIn Berkeley Square and Heavenly.(CD reviewed) -WO

VARIOUS ARTISTS -West CoastRoutes WestRoutes West - RW1001

An impressive sampling of West Coasttalent that spans rock, folk, pop andcountry, needless to say, a little left ofcentre of its sponsoring radio station,C -FOX. For the A& R people, who have-n't got the time, nor the desire to clubcrawl, executive producers, artistmanager Laurie Mercer and publicistEllie O'Day, have packaged togetherseven acts that deserve a listen. Therecould be the next Blue Rodeo, RandyTravis or, stretching it a little, AlannahMyles in this package. Listening be-tween the grooves here Is important.Vocal projection, lyric creativity anddelivery are there but it requires a goodlisten, something A&R people are sup-posed to do anyway. Key acts areSandy Scofield, Herald Nix, and TammiGreer. (CD reviewed) -WG
