Dear Reader, Welcome to this new issue of Infosylva! The International Day of Forests was celebrated worldwide on 21 March under the theme “Forests and Sustainable Cities”. At the celebration event held at its headquarters in Rome, FAO encouraged countries and cities worldwide to invest more in urban trees and forests, to help make our ever-growing urban areas cleaner, healthier and happier places to live. (In English, Spanish and French) At the same event, two new publications were launched, to illustrate how urban trees and forests can be instrumental to making our cities better places to live. Forests and Sustainable Cities - Inspiring stories from around the world, offers a number of exemplary green strategies for dealing with urban challenges, put in place in 15 cities of different sizes and in different regions of the world. On the other hand, Unasylva 250 - Forests and Sustainable Cities focuses more on the multiple ecosystem services that trees and forests provide to urban areas and the people who live in them. (In English – Unasylva is also available in French) In Senegal, a national platform on land governance, inspired by FAO’s Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VGGT) have generated a positive dialogue on land tenure and stimulated reforms in Senegal, which the FAO expert for the dissemination of the guidelines in francophone countries hopes will be soon incorporated into the tenure policies of the country. (In French) At an event in Brazzaville, Congo, organized by the Global Peatlands Initiative (GPI) with the technical support of FAO, the Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Indonesia signed the Brazzaville Declaration, with the intent to better collaborate to protect their valuable peatlands. (In English) A recently launched publication titled ‘Wood industry in Peru” (In Spanish) highlights Peru’s potential ability to produce wood from its country forests according to more sustainable models, since 90 percent of the wood produced in Peru is processed in the country. (In Spanish)

Finally, with Unasylva’s 250th issue, FAO is celebrating both more than 70 years of reliable forestry information and its longest-running periodical. La Journée internationale des forêts a été célébrée le 21 mars sous le thème «Forêts et villes durables». Lors de la célébration qui s’est tenue à son siège à Rome, la FAO a encouragé les pays et les villes du monde entier à investir davantage dans les forêts et les arbres urbains, pour rendre nos zones urbaines plus propres, plus saines et plus heureuses. (En anglais, espagnol et français) Lors du même événement, deux nouvelles publications ont été lancées pour illustrer comment les arbres et les forêts urbaines peuvent contribuer à faire de nos villes de meilleurs endroits où vivre. Forests and Sustainable Cities - Des histoires inspirantes du monde entier, (en anglais) propose un certain nombre de stratégies vertes exemplaires pour faire face aux défis urbains, qui ont été mises en place dans 15 villes de différentes tailles et dans différentes régions du monde. D'autre part, Unasylva 250 - Forêts et villes durables se concentre davantage sur les multiples services écosystémiques que les arbres et les forêts fournissent aux zones urbaines et aux personnes qui y vivent. Au Sénégal, une plateforme nationale sur la gouvernance foncière, inspirée des Directives volontaires de la FAO pour une gouvernance responsable des régimes fonciers applicables aux terres, aux pêches et aux forêts dans le contexte de la sécurité alimentaire nationale (VGGT), a suscité un dialogue positif sur les régimes fonciers dans le pays et a stimulé des reformes, que l'expert de la FAO pour la diffusion des lignes directrices dans les pays francophones espère voir bientôt incorporées dans les politiques foncières du pays. (En français) Lors d'une réunion à Brazzaville au Congo, organisée par la Global Peatlands Initiative (GPI) avec le soutien technique de la FAO, la République du Congo, la République démocratique du Congo et l'Indonésie ont signé la Déclaration de Brazzaville, dans le but de mieux collaborer pour protéger leurs précieuses tourbières. FAO Forestry announcements Guarding the planet’s carbon treasure - three countries sign the Brazzaville Declaration FAO REDD+ News 22/03/18 With the technical support of FAO, the Global Peatlands Initiative’s (GPI) 3rd Meeting of Partners, gathered more than 300 participants from all over the world to put peatlands back on the climate change agenda. The highlight of the meeting was the signing of the Brazzaville Declaration. Signed by the governments of the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Indonesia, the declaration aims to highlight the countries’ commitment to sharing knowledge, experiences and tools to help the peat-rich developing countries in protecting their valuable peatlands. New FAO publications IDF-related publications: Forests and Sustainable Cities - Inspiring stories from around the world Recognizing the importance of the services provided by forests and trees to urban dwellers, the Collaborative Partnership on Forests proposed that the theme for the 2018 International Day of Forests

would be “Forests and Sustainable Cities”. To mark this occasion and promote the widespread adoption of “green” strategies for dealing with urban challenges, FAO invited the mayors of 15 different sized cities from various regions around the world to present their experiences with trees and forests and to show how this green infrastructure has helped address urban challenges.
