Black Cultural Foods And Heritage Under Threat Of Extinction In The UKFrom 2011 The UK Government plan to BAN the majority of produce from the Caribbean, Africa & other non-European countries from coming into the UK. Therefore, it is imperative that our community ACTS NOW to stop them before it’s too late.

Founder Dounne Alexander launched petition, THE NATION SPEAKS - NO! Not In My Name’ to challenge this highly sensitive and controversial issue. Plus for the first time in history, a black woman together with the people’s support, will take on the European Union & UK Government . with a 100% chance of winning.

However, the issue is not about ‘race’ as these legislations will affect the entire UK population. Everyday the petition is gaining momentum (over 4000 signatures received online and rapidly rising); awakening people’s consciousness and generating tremendous public and ministerial support including Baroness Howells of St.Davids (our spokesperson in the House of Lords), plus Lord Pearson of Rannoch. So with our heritage under serious threat of extinction, it’s important for the entire ‘black community’ to spread this important petition to family & friends, and motivate them to SIGN THE PETITION TODAY until April 2011 by visiting:http://www.joininghandsinhealth.org/blackhistory.asp

Your participation will change the course of history.

Have you ever experienced a soul that weeps? Look at the external, the mantle of the physical that carries the Spirit, our Soul. Often times this is dull and grey against the sunshine and light of the world. A soul that weeps is one which continuously searches for something outside of itself and for itself. A soul that weeps is one which no longer laughs from the belly of their solar plexus, but rather from the empty gasket of the heart.

This therefore goes back to Who do you become when you are not standing in your truth? How are you feeling about you at this moment in time? Do you even recognise you? How do you experience you? Do you even know who you are, anymore? Are you speaking the thoughts of another? Are you blinded by your own ego which takes only the self into consideration and plays on the emotions of others? Or has fear relinquished your soul of your joy? To Read the whole article click here.

WHO DO YOU BECOME WHEN YOU ARE NOT STANDING IN YOUR TRUTH?

Angie Greaves can currently be heard every day on Magic 105.4’s Drive Time Show. The Emma Award winning and Sony nominated rising star is not only the first female Drive Time DJ, but also the very first female presenter on London’s No. 1 commercial station, Magic 105.4FM.

The latest RAJAR figures have confirmed that the More Music Drive presented by Angie is THE most listened to Drive Time show in London.

London born Angie is a true inspiration within the media world, reaching this accolade through sheer hard work and determination. Greaves started her media career in 1982 as an administrator at the BBC Television Centre. 4 years later, she moved to London’s top commercial station at that time, Capital Radio, which is where her journey truly begins.

The saying ‘you always find what you are looking for when you least expect it’ certainly rang true for Angie. She had no idea that clowning around the office in an American accent would lead to being ‘discovered’ by the renowned DJ David ‘The Kid’ Jensen. Her mesmerizing voice, mischievous sense of humour and infectious laughter helped her find her way into the recording studio to do some voice overs, after some coaxing from ‘The Kid’.

From that moment, Angie knew she was home. She found her true calling and has never looked back! The next stop on the Angie Greaves express was presenting the ‘Angie Greaves Breakfast Show’ on Choice FM, London’s first urban

radio station. From 1992 – 1997, the south London based radio station could not have been more thrilled as not only was Angie’s show the most popular in their schedule, but they also saw their listening figures treble!!!

In 1997 Angie continued to win the hearts of her listeners when presenting ‘Angie’s Sunday Magazine Show’ on BBC London Live and a weekly ‘Angie Greaves Music show’ for BBC Three Counties. She later went onto varying length stints at Jazz FM, and LBC.

The Angie Greaves Express sped through the ranks and is now firmly stationed at London’s No.1 commercial station, Magic 105.4FM. Angie was first asked to DJ the weekend show ‘Mellow Magic’ and within no time had wowed listeners with her unique calming voice, transforming the show into becoming a much loved weekend tradition for her fans! A connoisseur of her trade, Greaves managed to take complete control of the ‘More Music, Less Talk’ format on Magic and became market leader while presenting Mellow Magic, achieving higher listener figures than Radio 2!

Her incredible ability to increase show ratings and be the listeners’ favourite DJ did not go unnoticed by the Management at Magic, who realised that they were not capitalising on the talent right under their noses. Angie Greaves then became the first female daytime presenter and can now be heard every day from 5pm – 8pm on the More Music Drive Time. However, her weekend listeners fear not, Angie is one to never forget those who helped and supported her throughout her

career– so continues to present a Saturday mid-morning show and daily Love Letters.

Angie’s well recognised voice has been described as the ‘smoothest and sexiest in the business’ and can be heard on many commercials, documentaries, animation and corporate projects. You may also frequently recognise her voice on the Biography Channel on SKY.

Angie lives in Surrey and is a wife and mother of 2 girls aged 8 and 11years. Her two beautiful daughters are both very keen voice artists and also love the theatre. Watch this space, they may follow in their mother’s footsteps.

World Diabetes Day is celebrated every year on November 14. Created in 1991 by IDF and the World Health Organization (WHO) in response to growing concerns about the escalating threat of diabetes worldwide, it reaches a global audience of over 1 billion people. World Diabetes Day became an official United Nations Day in 2007.

“World Diabetes Day is about mobilizing the global diabetes community to produce a powerful voice for diabetes awareness. We want all concerned to take the necessary action to control an epidemic that affects the lives of over 300 million people in the world today,” said IDF President Jean Claude Mbanya.

For the general public and people at high risk of diabetes, the campaign aims to raise awareness and disseminate tools for prevention. For people with diabetes, the focus will be on disseminating tools to improve knowledge of the disease in order to better understand it and prevent complications.

National Adoption Week 1st - 7th November 2010

Since its launch in 1997, National Adoption Week has gone from strength to strength, reaching people across the UK wanting to know if they can adopt. And every year, we need your support.

The week encourages people to come forward to adopt the children who wait the longest – older children with disabilities, brothers and sisters, and children from some black and minority ethnic backgrounds.

We are asking the public to keep an open mind, and see the individual child. National Adoption Week is so important in reminding people about the backgrounds of the children waiting for adoption and the difference adoption can make to a child’s life. We know from existing adoptive families that it can be hard work, but the rewards are huge. This is a chance to transform a child’s life for ever.

National Adoption Week also attracts people wanting to find out about their own adoption or about a child they put up for adoption. We have advice and support for these people.

New campaign will alert people to early signs of cancerThe government has announced a new campaign that will improve people’s awareness of the early signs of cancer and the need to seek timely treatment.

Experts are concerned that many people fail to spot early signs and symptoms and hope the campaign - which will be launched in January 2011 - will improve the public’s knowledge of breast, bowel and lung cancer.

In all, 59 local campaigns will be launched, with local areas sharing in a dedicated £9 million fund.

For instance, NHS Leeds plans to advertise on key bus routes, while NHS Liverpool – which has cancer mortality rates that are 38 per cent higher than the average in England - will use social marketing to try to encourage people with signs and symptoms of cancer to visit their doctor more promptly.

In addition, the Department of Health plans to trial a centrally-led campaign in two pilot regions to raise awareness of bowel

cancer symptoms and encourage people who are concerned to visit their doctor.

Care services minister Paul Burstow said: “Our aim is simple - we want to save many more lives and achieve cancer survival rates among the best

in the world.

“In England we are lagging behind European countries when it comes to the common but big killer cancers, such as breast, bowel and lung.

The NHS is spending at European levels but still not delivering European cancer survival rates.

“We know that generally the earlier cancer is diagnosed, the better the outlook. That’s why our campaign will help people to be more alert to the early signs and symptoms of cancer and encourage them to seek medical advice as soon as possible.”

Cancer Research UK’s executive director of communications and information Sarah Lyness said: “We’ve

made great strides in improving cancer survival with rates doubling over the last 40 years. But we often diagnose cancer

late in this country so we welcome any campaign that raises awareness of the signs of key cancers and that encourages people

to seek help if they notice unusual changes.

“Encouraging people to seek help from their doctor if they suspect cancer is the crucial first step in getting a speedy cancer diagnosis. GP’s also need to recognise symptoms and refer for diagnosis appropriately and

treatment must follow as quickly as possible. We hope this campaign will encourage people to get that little niggle checked out. It could

save their life.”

Community activists, health campaigners have come out in support of Black Mental Health UK’s condemnation of the death of a 23 year old student who lost his life after being restrained of by a team of seven police officers on a psychiatric ward in Beckenham, South London.

Olaseni Lewis lost his life on the same day that Colin Holt a 57 year old black service users also suffered fatal injuries after police went to his home on the 31st of August this year.

Olaseni, known to his family as Seni, was a second year Masters student at Kingston University. He had no prior history of mental illness but his family noted that he was acting strangely that sought professional help. He was then admitted as a vulnerable voluntary patient at the Bethlem Royal Hospital in Beckenham early in the evening of Tuesday 31 August.

Just hours after his family left the hospital Seni was reported to have become agitated, staff called the police to restrain him. Up to seven Met officers pinned Seni down; his airway became blocked, unable to breath he fell into a coma.

He was rushed to Mayday Hospital and confirmed brain dead on September 3, his life support was turned off the following day.

These deaths have led to calls for an end to the use of prone restraint on mental health service users and for all mental health providers to phase out the use of calling police to deal with internal incidences within psychiatric settings.

These tragedies have also highlighted the failure of the Department of Health’s million pound Delivering Race Equality Programme, which was rolled out in response to the David Bennett Inquiry report.

In 1998, Bennett died after he was forcibly restrained by a team of up to five nurses for over 25 minutes.

Recommendations included calls to ensure that no patient be restrained in the prone position for more than 3 minutes and the introduction of a national system on control and restrain.

‘Olaseni Lewis and Colin Holt are the latest in a long line of service users who have lost their lives in this way. There needs to be full accountability when a death occurs and a commitment to fully implement the Bennett Inquiry recommendations in order to see change in this arena,’ Matilda MacAttram director of Black Mental Health UK said.

‘The death of Seni Lewis should not have happen in this day and age. Sadly this is price that black people pay for the failure to implement the recommendation of the Rocky Bennett inquiry,’ Prof Sashi Sashidaran, consultant psychiatrist and panel member on the David Bennett Inquiry.

‘People with mental illness should not be restrained period. It is quite shocking that this can still happen two years after my brother died. It is absolutely that is crucial that the Bennett Report recommendations are revisited and fully implemented,’ Marcia Rigg from the Sean Rigg Justice and Change campaign said.

‘Rather than spending billions on medication investment should be made in devising more humane intervention when dealing with people who need help. We need to come to a place where there is no restraint in the 21st century. We should be able to find other techniques which aren’t killing people,’ Rev Paul Grey, service user activist said.

‘What is obvious is that nothing has changed since the David Bennett inquiry report. We had a similar situation with one of our own service users here in Wolverhampton so we know that this kind of treatment that is resulting in patient deaths. It begs the question, how many others has this happened to that we are not even aware of,’ Alicia Spence services director at the African Caribbean Community Initiative (ACCI) said.

‘It is quite tragic that another young black man has been cut down in his prime by the agencies we expect to protect us. We would have hoped with all the resources and time that has been spent on this matter, that these failings in the system would have been addressed by now,’ Olu Alake president of 100 Black Men of London said.

Donisha Prendergast, daughter of Rita Marley’s first daughter Sharon, was born after Bob Marley died and though she grew up in the Marley family household, was not brought up as a Rasta.

Now in her early 20’s, Donisha decided to embark on a journey of discovery to find her Rasta roots and to document the process on film, travelling to several locations to learn about Rastafari – the movement that inspired Bob Marley to write his most powerful songs.

The documentary, “RASTA“, takes an in-depth look at Rastafari and its cultural and historical links to other people and groups around the world. Says Donisha: “Since Bob Marley’s music and lyrics were informed by his Rastafarian beliefs, it’s important for people to have

a deeper understanding of who Rastafarians are today and the impact the movement has had on peoples of the world.”

The journey has taken her around the world, filming interviews in all five continents with special emphasis on those Rastafarians who can teach her all she wants to know about the movement. The film will feature interviews with some of today’s most celebrated reggae artists, Rastafarians and academics who have studied the Rastafarian movement, as well as interviews with ‘reggae royalty’ Damian Marley and Tarrus Riley.

Phase one of the documentary was completed earlier this year with a shoot in Washington, D.C.., where Prendergast visited the DISCOVERING RASTAFARI exhibit at the Smithsonian Institute and interviewed custodian James

Homiak. In August the production

filmed interview with Rastafarians and scholars attending the UWI Rastafari Studies Conference. The third phase of the production continues in Canada, England and India, with editing scheduled to begin by November.

Buju Banton Not A Easy Road

A US judge has declared a mistrial for reggae star Buju Banton (pictured right), accused last year of conspiring to buy cocaine from an undercover police officer.

Jurors in the US state of Florida were unable to reach a verdict. The four-time Grammy nominee may be re-tried in December. A defence lawyer asked he be freed on a bond.

Banton, a Jamaican national, maintained he had been entrapped by a paid police informant whom he believed had music industry connections.During the four-day trial which ended last week, prosecutors played audio recordings in which Banton, whose real name is Mark Myrie, and the informant discussed drugs, ideas for shipping drugs, and dollar amounts. Prosecutors said the tapes showed Banton wanted to finance drug deals.

The 37 year old performer testified he only talked about drugs with the informant in order to impress him. Questioned by Banton’s lawyer, the informant, Alexander Johnson, acknowledged Banton had never given him money.

“The government tried to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt, and they did not do it,” Banton lawyer David Markus told the Associated Press news agency.

Banton has been jailed since December 10.

Do you not think that you are the one that you have been waiting for?The one who will show up in all of your glory and offer to you all that you could possibly need, or want, or desire?

Just who do you think you are not?Are you not the one who has been there for you - holding you up - pushing you on - encouraging you - applauding you?Who did that for you, if not you?

Who was there when you cried and ached and believed in the depth of your being that you could not, you simply would not make it through another day.

You said - Huh, oh yes you will, and you gave whatever was needed, whenever it was needed to get back on track.

Who do you think is responsible for how you are growing - how you have grown, all that you have learned and grasped and now understand and realize;which has put a new song in your heart as you walk on a new path.
