THE SECRETARY-GENERAL --

MESSAGE TO THE NATIONAL MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE NMUN•NY 2014

New York, 13 -17 April 2014

Your participation in this Model UN comes at a time of opportunity and risk for the human family. We are the first generation that can end extreme poverty -- yet people and the planet face the rising pressures of a warming climate, growing inequality and exploitation from mines to fields to factory floor.

The United Nations works every day, around the clock, across the world, to confront today’s emergencies while building foundations of peace for tomorrow. We are feeding the hungry, fighting disease and pressing for a nuclear-weapon-free world. We are strengthening peacekeeping, peacebuilding and preventive diplomacy as well as our tools for justice and accountability. Our sights are also set on the key year of 2015: the deadline for achieving the Millennium Development Goals, reaching an agreement on climate change and adopting a bold vision for the period beyond 2015 that will advance economic growth, social progress and environmental stewardship.

These plans are ambitious. We need people to make them real. That means you. I count on you to use the negotiating skills you learn in this Model UN exercise to help navigate the real-world challenges we face. I encourage you to join forces with like-minded individuals and groups to generate change and promote mutual tolerance, understanding and respect. I also hope you will link to the United Nations through our Twitter and Facebook accounts.

Technology has globalized communications. Now we have to globalize compassion and citizenship. In a world that is more connected, we must be more united. With our fates ever more entwined, our future must be one of ever deeper and wider cooperation. That is the global logic of our times.

I look forward to the contributions you will make to our shared work for peace, development and human rights. Please accept my best wishes for a memorable experience.

Dear Honorable Delegates, Faculty Advisors, Staff and Friends:

On behalf of the volunteer Secretariat for the 2014 National Model United Nations (NMUN) Conference I sincerely welcome you to New York City and to this year’s conference. Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication during the past months. Over the past year, the Secretariat has also diligently prepared for your arrival. I know these efforts will result in a rewarding and exciting conference experience.

The NMUN Secretariat and our sponsor, the National Collegiate Conference Association (NCCA), take pride in providing this unique opportunity to more than 5,000 college and university students from six continents. It is our mission to provide you with the best educational experience, and we look forward to seeing you engage in dialogue and work towards compromise on some of the world’s most complex issues. We encourage each of you to take this opportunity to enhance your perspective of existing and emerging global issues, and to embrace the remarkable diversity of this conference reflected in the attendees who share different perspectives than your own.

Our theme this year “Equality for a Better World” is both motivating and challenging. It is our sincere hope that it will resonate with you not only as you work tirelessly during the conference, but as you spend time reflecting on the mark you wish to make in the world in the years to come.

Once again, thank you for all of your preparation, and I welcome you to the 2014 National Model United Nations Conference. I know this time will be an unforgettable educational experience.

Sincerely,

Thera J. Watson Secretary-General, 2014 National Model United Nations•NY Conference

31 OCTOBER - 2 NOVEMBER 2014: Since 2007, NMUN•DC has offered delegates a forum to discuss current events in the US capital. An opening session at the US Department of State offers future leaders a sense of how diplomats implement foreign policy. The conference boasts access to briefings by US government experts and from embassies. Outside committee, the museums and monuments delight delegates. NMUN•DC is held in partnership with the Osgood Center for International Studies.

NOVEMBER 2014: Join us in this world capital, home to three international UN agencies and numerous UNESCO World Heritage sites. We will stay in the historic city center, a renaissance masterpiece of fountains, artwork, and churches, including Vatican City. NMUN•Europe: Rome, Italy will be held in partnership with Consules.

NOVEMBER 2015: Join us as we return to the charming city of Olomouc in the Czech Republic. The conference will give participants the opportunity to visit Olomouc’s UNESCO world heritage site and hopefully its Christmas markets. Tentative site visits include the Auschwitz/Birkenau concentration camps or Krakow, Poland. NMUN•Europe: Olomouc, Czech Republic will be held in partnership with Palacký University.

Throughout her career, Angela Cressy Deane has been deeply involved in human rights. In her current position at Human Rights Watch, an international NGO, where she serves as the director of the New York Committee, she focuses on development and fundraising for an organization that is dedicated to defending and protecting human rights worldwide. Her decision to pursue the M.S. in Global A airs o ered by the NYU School of Continuing and Professional Studies (NYU-SCPS) Center for Global A airs, stemmed from her desire to gain a broader perspective of international human rights. Through rigorous coursework and the opportunity to complete fi eld intensives in Cuba, Bosnia, Serbia, and at The Hague, she was able to meet people from around the world who o ered the nuanced perspectives that have enhanced her ability to raise funds for this incredibly important cause.
