The Midas PRO Series Live Audio Systems employs technology developed from the class-leading XL8, offering the same exemplary sample - synchronised audio performance. The PRO series can provide up to 104 simultaneous input processing channels and up to 35 discrete mixes in monitor mode, all of which feature EQ and a choice of dynamics processing op-tions. By adding additional I/O hardware the PRO series network can be expanded to 288 inputs x 294 outputs with point-to-point routing anywhere within the network which can then be patched and routed on a scene-by-scene basis via a powerful snapshot automation system. The PRO series effects and dynamics algorithms are more than superb quality, easy-to use SHARC-based effects pro-cessing. They are incorporated within the

automatic delay management system, so that wherever they are patched, the audio will be absolutely phase-coherent when summed into your mix. It is pos-sible to assign up to 36 1/3 octave Klark Teknik DN370 graphic EQs, for demanding monitor applications, all of which can be controlled using the optional Klark Teknik DN9331 Rapide moving fader remote. All of this in addition to the four types of compression available on inputs, and five types on outputs. FX options, configura-tions, settings and patching can change completely with each scene recall. The possibilities are almost endless. Reliability is designed into all Midas prod-ucts, and all PRO Series hardware ele-ments feature redundant power supplies as standard. The FPGA processing engine is of modular construction, with the option of a spare module which will automati-

cally deploy in the event of an engine module failure (n+1 model). Due to its modular configuration the DSP engines of both the PRO3 and PRO6 can be loaded and upgraded to PRO9 specification. PRO Series digital audio transport uses the international AES50 standard, featuring feedforward error correction which pro-vides superior protection against lost data packets and synchronization issues when compared to other Ethernet cable based systems. All links between PRO series hard-ware elements support redundant cables for copper and optical options are avail-able on the PRO6 and PRO9. The Control Centre houses dual redun-dant Linux master control computers (MCs), both running full versions of the rel-evant PRO Series Linux software. Either MC is capable of running the entire system on its own and control can be switched be-tween the two without any loss of audio. • Dual “Daylight Visible” Screens with 3-way KVM switch• XL8-Style “Fast Zones”• XL8-Style Dual Operator “Channel Strips”

788T Multi-Track Digital Audio Recorder

The 788T and the SSD-equipped 788T-SSD are powerful eight input, 12-track digital audio recorders designed for produc-tion sound. Building on the success of the proven 7-Series architecture, the 788T offers greatly expanded input and output connectivity while continuing the 7-Series heritage of extensive control in a com-pact package. Its eight full-featured inputs ensure superb audio quality. They accept either micro-phone or line-level signals, provide 48 V phantom power for condenser micro-phones, offer peak limiters for microphone inputs, and fully adjustable high-pass filters. Support for AES42 digital micro-phones is also available. Extensive routing flexibility allows each input to be routed to left/right mixed tracks, isolated tracks, or aux tracks. With optional CL-8 Control-ler or the CL-9 Linear Fader Controller, the 788T is even easier to use, making the combination a flexible mixer/recorder, with lots of operational flexibility. The 788T has three options for recording media, internal 160 GB SATA hard drive, CompactFlash media with UDMA support, or an external FireWire hard drive or DVD-RAM (with bus powering). The 788T-SSD version substitutes the hard drive with a 256 GB solid-state hard drive. Any or all of these can be used simultaneously. Addi-tionally, when connected to Mac OS, or Windows computers with high-speed USB

or FireWire 400/800, the 788T functions as a high-speed mass storage device. To simplify interconnection with mixers and cameras with AES3 connectivity, the 788T has eight channels of balanced AES3 digital input and six channels of balanced AES3 output. The 788T can be clocked from external word clock or from video sync. The 788T has a high-accuracy time code reader/generator on board. It includes auto-record features to chase external rec-run video sources. To simplify metadata entry the 788T directly accepts USB keyboards. We started the bass amp 2.0 revolution with the award winning RH450 bass amp, but it’s far from over! So, join the revolution as bass amp 2.0 continues with two com-bos that combine tons of raw power with stunning tone shaping tools and an impres-sive list of unconventional features. Meet BG500 115 and BG500 210. Get ready to plug, play and groove.

BG500 shares many features with the original RH450 which has already changed the way many bass players have come to think of amplification. Just ask Rocco Prestia of Tower of Power who made his very own version: Staccato’51.

The powerful 500 Watt amps in the two models are identical and both have 1” Emi-nence tweeters, but you can choose from either 2x10” or 1x15” Eminence driver con-figurations.

22 Artists

Mos Def

Regarded as one of hip-hop’s most introspective and insightful artists, Mos Def has shaped a career that transcends music genres and artistic medium. With the release of Universal Magnetic, Mos became an underground favorite in the hip-hop world, leading to his legendary collaboration with Talib Kweli. The two formed the group Black Star, whose de-but album, Mos Def and Talib Kweli Are…Black Star, would become one of the most critically acclaimed hip-hop albums. Mos followed that release with his 1999 solo debut, Black On Both Sides, which was certified gold and credited by critics as bringing hip-hop back to its soapbox roots. He released a new studio album in 2007 titled True Magic (Goodtree Media/Geffen Records). The Estactic marked the artist and activist’s fourth solo release and highly anticipated return to recording. Heralded as his finest full length to date, the album was met by praise across the board for its hard hitting rhythms includ-ing Esquire Magazine who said “Because

there is no better lyricist (or deliverer of lyrics) in music. Not hip-hop. Music.”As with his music, Mos has demonstrated insight and passion with his acting career. He has appeared in the critically ac-claimed projects Monster’s Ball, The Italian Job, the HBO movie Something the Lord Made, The Woodsman, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and 16 Blocks. He also recently completed filming Be Kind, Rewind, directed by Michel Gondry, in which he stars alongside Jack Black. Mos completed his Broadway debut in 2002 in the Tony-nominated, Pulitzer Prize-winning Topdog/Underdog; and re-teamed with the playwright Suzan Lori Parks and direc-tor George Wolfe for the off-Broadway play Fucking A, for which he was award-ed an Obie Award. In addition, Mos has served as the host, music supervisor and co-executive producer for the HBO se-ries Def Poetry, which returned for its sixth season in 2007. He has received Grammy, Golden Globe, EMMY, NAACP Image Award nominations for his work.

Testament: Eric PetersonArtist: Eric Peterson - guitarist, Testament

TC Electronic equipment: Nova DelayWebsite: www.testamentlegions.comMySpace: www.myspace.com/testa-mentlegionsTestament was one of the first thrash metal bands to emerge from the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1980’s. Un-doubtedly, they are the inventors of the thrash-metal wheel. Testament’s power-ful sound, influence, and longevity make them one of the Top 5 All-Time Legendary Thrash Metal Bands, putting them in the company of Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica, and Anthrax.Testament is right now on the verge of signing a worldwide record contract to release an all-new album, which the band hopes to have in stores by March 2008!!! For this brand new record, the band has brought their original lineup back togeth-

er – vocalist Chuck Billy, guitarists Eric Peterson & Alex Skolnick, and bassist Greg Christian – and have added friend and former member, Paul Bostaph.

“It’s been a long time, but I’m glad we waited because we have pretty much the full lineup back,” says Peterson.

Eric Peterson gives a rundown on his gear Originally formed as ‘Legacy’ in 1983 by founding members Peterson (rhythm guitar), Derrick Ramirez (guitar) and Louie Clemente (drums), the line-up included vocalist Steve Souza and Christian (bass). Ramirez was later replaced by guitar prodigy Alex Skolnick (lead guitar). How-ever, Souza left to join Exodus and sug-gested that the towering Chuck Billy take over as frontman. While recording their first record, the band adopted the ‘Testa-ment’ moniker. The band’s 1987 debut album, “The Leg-acy,” thrust Testament to the front of the flourishing thrash metal scene. Following “Live At Eindhoven”, an EP recorded at Holland’s Dynamo Festival, “The New Or-der” in 1988 was well received, producing one of the band’s most memorable clas-sics “Disciples Of The Watch”. Next came the highly successful “Practice What You Preach” in 1989, then the release of “Souls Of Black” in 1990.After “The Ritual” in 1992, Testament saw many lineup changes. Clemente left, as well as Skolnick who left to pursue jazz music projects. The band persevered and continued to write and record new music. “Low” was released in 1994 with John Tempesta (ex- Exodus) on drums, and “Demonic” followed in 1997, this time with Gene Hoglan (ex- Death, Dark Angel, Unearth) replacing Tempesta. The album was recorded at Testament’s Driftwood

Studios. “Signs of Chaos,” a collection of Testament’s best tracks, was released in 1997.For their next major release, Dave Lom-bardo (ex- Slayer, Grip, Inc.) was officially introduced into the band. James Murphy, who played guitar on “Low,” was brought back once again, along with the legend-ary Steve DiGiorgio (ex- Death, Control Denied, Sadus) on bass. “The Gather-ing” was born in 1999. Soon after, James Murphy abruptly departed, determined later to be the result of a serious illness. Steve Smyth (ex-Vicious Rumors) jumped aboard as ‘touring guitarist’, later to be in-vited to stay on as a permanent member. Lombardo also left the band, not being able to commit because of other proj-ects. In 2000, Jon Allen (drums, ex- Sadus) joined the band. After the “Riding The Snake” world tour to promote “The Gathering”, vocalist Billy was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called ‘germ cell seminoma’ in March 2001. Despite his illness and grueling can-cer treatments, Billy offered his ground shaking vocals to the re-recording of Tes-tament classics on “First Strike Still Deadly” which brought back Alex Skolnick and John Tempesta to record on the disc.Billy battled back from his sickness and

has fully recovered. The band has been touring ever since late 2002, most recently wrapping up a wildly successful South American tour in 2007. Testament has been working hard on getting the new re-cord together at the studio in their home-town, and they have very high expecta-tions for it.Adds Billy, “The new record is very heavy but very melodic at the same time. It’s an extension from “The Gathering”. We’re also incorporating solos cuz Alex is back and we haven’t had many on the last few records.”“I’m real excited about the new record. There’s a lot of old-school/new-school ideas. It sounds very modern. I think all Testament fans will be pleased and more,” says Peterson.Testament is once again ready to at-tack the music world with their trademark brand of thrash metal, and the band is very optimistic about their future together.“It’s come full circle. We were together, moving strong, then we broke up and had several different lineups,” says Billy. “But now we got a new band, a new label, a new album, everything’s positive. Once the record’s done, I think it’s going to be a good year coming up.”

Most residents of Dubai know of DJ Greg Stainer from Radio 1 UAE and many more know of him as resident DJ at Zinc, the nightclub at Crowne Plaza Hotel. How-ever, while not on the radio or DJing at hot clubs throughout the world, Greg is busy creating new music, producing and remixing house music in his home studio using a laptop, various software and hard-ware. An important part of his hardware arsenal is the TC Electronic Konnekt 24D, a firewire audio interface with built-in DSP effects.

Since acquiring the system, DJ Greg Stainer has already signed four tracks to record labels in the United Kingdom and Italy and done several remixes for various European record labels. Konnekt 24D is a groundbreaking audio interface that integrates TC’s world famous effects in a state-of-the-art design. The Fabrik C chan-nel strip and Fabrik R reverb known from TC’s PowerCore platform are built into the unit and they work even when the inter-face is used in stand-alone mode. Kon-nekt 24D is designed for recording and performing musicians who want the high-

est possible sound quality from input, through built-in real-time effects, to the recording application.

“What is really great about the Konnekt 24D is that you get two things - an audio interface device and a plug-in engine in one compact lightweight package” says DJ Greg Stainer. He continues: “It’s simple to use, has great on board effects and it sounds great, what more can you ask?”DJ Greg Stainer’s studio setup:• HP Pavilion 2.5 GHz dual core dual monitor PC• TC Electronic Konnekt 24D audio inter-face• M-Audio Axiom 49• Dynaudio Acoustics BM5A monitors• M-Audio Luna mic• Behringer 12 channel mixer• Cubase SX4• Reason4• Various Plug-ins, refils and sof synths
