The mission of the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society is to maintain, manage and operate an organization

to acquire, preserve, display and study historical materials, objects and artifacts relating

to the area surrounding Harbor Springs, Michigan.

On the Cover:Photographer Daniel Williams captured the essence of summertime in the resorts with this early 1900s image of the Harbor Point dock. While Daniel documented scenes of Harbor Springs, his wife, light keeper Elizabeth Whitney Williams, tended the Little Traverse Light from 1884 until her retirement in 1913.

Putting it all into words

It is difficult to put into words the absolute joy I feel as I review the text for our future local history exhibits. Our exhibit design team, led by HSAHS Museum Professional Mary Cummings and Good Design Group’s Exhibit Designer John Metcalf, has done a tremendous job of telling our history in a compelling and visually appealing way. From the early Odawa residents to our present-day traditions, these exhibits showcase the memories that make the Harbor Springs area unique.

And what lasting memories they are. As you visit our exhibits, you will become inspired by the images and stories of those Harbor Springs residents that came before us. It is hard not to be touched by brave pioneers such as lighthouse keeper Elizabeth Whitney Williams who served as a light keeper for 41 years. Her story is one of sacrifice and illustrates the arduous and often solitary life of a lighthouse keeper. Included in the display is an interactive feature that will teach children and adults the importance of lighthouses as they guide a ship from Mackinac to Harbor Springs at night.

You will become awed by the ingenuity of our ancestors. In the Ephraim Shay portion of our Discovery Gallery, guests will learn what innovations allowed Shay’s locomotive to climb steeper hills and turn tighter corners than other locomotives. As an added bonus, you will have the opportunity to control a model Shay locomotive as it travels around the perimeter of the gallery.

You will realize the sacrifices made by the men, women and children who settled this region and built this community. Utilizing photographs, documents and a Civil War musket donated by Cindy and Martha Ford, the homestead portion of our Local History Gallery showcases the life of the Abraham Stutsman family. As typical settlers arriving soon after the end of the Civil War, their experiences mirror those of many other families in the region.

Local history is a tremendous field of study. Often just as one mystery is solved, new questions beg to be answered. During the research for these exhibits, the HSAHS staff and board have discovered how much we have yet to learn about those who came before us. These exhibits in the Harbor Springs History Museum will serve as a catalyst for rediscovering those people and stories that helped define who we are as a community.

The Harbor Springs Area Historical Society series Harbor History Talks continues with two great programs this summer. The early images of late photographer Virgil D. Haynes will be the subject of the first talk set for Thursday, July 10th. Haynes’ daughter Cynthia will present A Natural Eye: Obscure Artistic Images of Virgil D. Haynes focusing on a handful of unusual early images from the 1930s and 1940s. Cynthia’s talk will begin at 6:30 pm at the City Hall Council Chambers at 160 Zoll Street. The Haynes talk will also coincide with the official release of the second set of Harbor Springs Classics limited-edition lithographs. The 2008 release includes an image of the Holy Childhood Church and School taken on an icy winter day as well as a 1947 image of State and Bay streets including Juilleret’s, Bar Harbor and Al’s at the Pier. The lithographs are the second

in a three-year series of classic Haynes images and a project of the Historical Society. Lithographs from both the first and second sets will be available for purchase and pick-up the evening of the talk. Later this summer, Tom Graham will again present his Hotels of the Past talk. On Thursday, August 14th, plan to walk through several hotels of Harbor Springs’ past including the short-lived Kensington Hotel, the Emmet House and a few of the resort hotels. The talk will begin at 6:30 pm at the City Hall Council Chambers. Graham will pair great historical images of the old hotels with stories as only he can tell them. The Harbor History Talks are free and open to the public. Donations are welcomed. For more information, call HSAHS at (231) 526-9771 or visit us online, HarborSpringsHistory.org.

Exterior Painting Underway

The excitement is building

It has been a busy winter and spring for the HSAHS and our contractors as the restoration of the old City Hall continues. During the last few months over a century of grime, dirt, glue and tar has been removed from the wood floors in the building. The patina in the floorboards now tells tremendous stories, including detailing the history of the second story’s past as a shooting range with deep burn marks in the wood from hundreds of hot shell casings. The restoration of the main lobby paneling and ceiling is far more labor intensive than originally thought. The removal

of paint, grime and stain—often a quarter of an inch thick in places—has held up the final painting of the interior of the building. While this has caused delays in the project, the Historical Society and architects believe that the preservation of the building’s original woodwork is the primary concern. So while we hope the final painting and staining of the interior will begin shortly, we need to patiently allow our contractors to complete the wood stripping process. The question on everyone’s mind has been, “When will the painting begin on the exterior of the building?” With the

weather finally beginning to cooperate with us, the restoration of the wood siding has been completed and the first coats of exterior paint have been applied. Additionally, the exterior of both brick vaults has been repaired. The opening date of the museum has been placed on hold until we learn more about how long the stripping and painting process will take to complete. It is our hope that we will still open in the late summer or early fall. We thank you for bearing with us and understanding that the restoration process involved in a building this old is often very time consuming.

East Vault

With these delays in mind, we are still extremely proud of the work that has been done on the building. Later this week the elevator will be operational. The restoration of the windows has been finished and storm windows should be installed shortly. The interior of the building is close to being finished and plans have begun for the offices of the Historical Society to be transferred to the museum. A wonderful landscape plan donated by Sheridan Jones has been finalized and we should begin the installation of our grass, brick pavers and gardens after the painting is complete.

Spring Fling event at the Pier a success! Friends of the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society gathered at Stafford’s Pier Restaurant for the Spring Fling event Friday, April 25. Guests puzzled over historic photographs and facts while perusing a great selection of silent auction items. Thanks to chair Lesley Fischer for organizing this popular spring event, to the Pier for hosting the event again this year and to all of our HSAHS supporters who joined in for a fun evening. Thanks also go to the following donors who donated items for the silent auction:

Museum outdoor spaces planned As summer quickly approaches, the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society and the City of Harbor Springs have finalized landscaping plans for the new Harbor Springs History Museum. Specific features include teak benches, a wooden arbor and fencing, annual and perennial gardens, an outdoor meeting space, and patios and walkways lined with brick pavers. Landscape architect Sheridan Jones has designed these stunning spaces. “In anticipation of warmer weather, we are eager to put the finishing touches on the exterior of this museum,” said Historical Society president Tanya Graham. “We are hopeful members of the community will receive as much enjoyment from the beauty of these grounds as they will from the rich heritage preserved inside the building.” The target date for opening the Harbor Springs History Museum is

Fall 2008. Donations to the project are still being accepted and there are still several opportunities to be recognized for contributing to the museum. Bricks

for the Legacy Patios and the exterior walkway are also available for purchase. Please call the Historical Society at 526-9771 for more information.

Sheridan Jones, landscape architect, looks over the final plans for the Harbor Springs History Museum. The grounds of the museum will include two brick patios and a side yard that can be used as an outdoor meeting space.

2008 HSAHS Membership Levels

Chances are good that you have received a letter from the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society in the last 12 months that either encouraged you to become a member of the organization or requested that you make a financial donation. Many of our friends and supporters have been asking, “What’s the difference?” The following explanations are intended to help answer this question.

The word ‘member’ is a noun defined as an individual belonging to a group such as a society. It derives from the Latin word membrum, meaning “limb,’ and indeed, each member is a meaningful piece to the whole of this organization. To fully capture the importance of being a member of the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society, a new membership program was launched in February 2008. It offers an opportunity for everyone to participate at any level and, as a member, you will receive unlimited general admission to

the Harbor Springs History Museum, a one year subscription to the quarterly Harbor Springs History newsletter, pre-registration and free or reduced rates to special events, tours and lectures. The newsletter will be sent only to current members beginning with the December issue.

‘Donation’ originated from the Latin word donum, which means ‘gift,’ and is defined as something that is given to charity, especially a sum of money. The HSAHS is a non- profit organization with 501 (c) (3) status from the Internal Revenue Service and very much relies on the generous gifts from its donors to accomplish many things. Donations totaling over $1.8 million have made the construction and renovation of the new Harbor Springs History Museum a reality. Further, nearly $40,000 was raised during the annual fund drive last November and these gifts are used for the continued

operation, programs and activities of the organization. What’s more, gifts to the HSAHS are tax deductible, too!

There are many benefits to becoming a member of the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society and to supporting the organization with your financial gifts. Thank you for your belief in our mission to acquire, preserve, display and study historical materials, objects and artifacts relating to the unique city of Harbor Springs, Michigan and its surrounding communities.
