Ltd., 2015 1 Policy News Kerala government creates registry for cancer patients The Kerala government intends to compile a registry of cancer patients to codify its initiatives against cancer. A panel of oncologists has been created which would be submitting its report in six months. Currently, there are 1.5 lakh cancer affected patients in the state, besides an annual registration of 50,000 new patients. The state has been freely distributing medicines, valued up to INR 10 crore, under different schemes. Union Government announces AIIMSlike facilities for J&K The Union Government has announced the setting up of an All India Institutes of Medical Science (AIIMS) like facilities in Jammu & Kashmir (J&K), to bring about balanced healthcare development in the region. Such institutes would offer the same facilities as AIIMS. Further, six AIIMS will be established in six states to meet the rising demand for doctors. J&K to appoint 4,000 paramedics and 800 doctors Apart from establishing a medical college the Anantnag District Hospital in Kashmir the Union Government would be appointing more than 4,000 paramedics and 845 doctors in the next four months in J&K. The funding would be sourced followed by approval. The Anantnag District Hospital will have all manpower and logistic facilities. Further, a concept plan has been drafted to set up physiotherapycum rehabilitation, nurse training and skill development centres in the colleges. Industry News Sun Pharma reduces staff After the acquisition of Ranbaxy for USD 3.2 billion, Sun Pharmaceuticals has decreased staff in its research and development segment. Around 150 senior executives have been retrenched, though efforts are on to retain the maximum number of employees. The acquisition was undertaken in March 2015 and has met with various challenges. India to suffer losses in pharma exports Following the ban by European Commission on 700 generic drugs, India is expected to suffer a loss of INR 6,300 crore in pharmaceutical exports, according to the Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council. The Ministry of Commerce intends to complain against the European Commission’s decision on account of the country’s exports of pharmaceutical products in 201415 which amounts to INR 94,275 crore. ❑ Purdue  University  and  Dr  Reddy's  sign  MoU  A  Memorandum  of  Understanding  (MoU)  has  been  signed  between  Purdue  University  and  Dr.  Reddy’s  to  ramp   up   research   and   development.   According   to   the   agreement,   a   centre   is   to   be   set   up   at   Purdue  Research   Park,   where   faculty   members   and   students   would   be   involved   in   drug   innovation   and  development,   to  be   followed  by  excellence   in  manufacturing.  Dr.  Reddy’s  offers  as  many  as  200  generics  globally.  The  MoU  will  transform  basic  research  into  life-­‐changing  cures  and  therapies.  

Investment  News  ❑ Teva  Pharmaceuticals  procures  Allergan  Teva  Pharmaceuticals  of   Israel   has  purchased  Allergan’s   generic  drugs  business   for  USD  40.5  billion.   The  transaction   would   be   both   in   cash   and   stock.   Teva   will   pay   USD   33.75   billion   in   cash,   while   the   stock    transaction  would   amount   to  USD   6.75   billion.   Teva   plans   a   similar   agreement  with  Mylan.  Meanwhile,  Allergan  plans  to  procure  Naurex,  which  is  manufacturing  an  effective  antidepressant.    

❑ Alivira  Animal  Health  to  acquire  Lyka’s  veterinary  business  Alivira  Animal  Health  announced  plans   to  purchase   the  veterinary  business  of  Mumbai-­‐based  Lyka   Labs.  Alivira  Animal  Health   is  a   joint  venture  between  Shasun  Pharmaceuticals  and  Sequent  Scientific.  Sequent  has   recently   undertaken   diversification   of   businesses.   Besides   exclusive   patented   technologies,   Lyka’s  animal  health  business  would  provide  Sequent  with  an  array  of  established  products.    

❑  MedPlus  announces  investment  of  INR  100  crore  MedPlus  plans  to  investment  INR  100  crore  to  set  up  350  outlets  in  Delhi  and  the  National  Capital  Region  (NCR).  By  the  end  of  2017,  the  number  of  outlets  is  to  be  raised  to  400.  Apart  from  adding  10  to  15  outlets,  the   firm  will   follow   the   franchise  model.   At   present,  MedPlus   has  more   than   1,260   stores   in   12   states  catering  to  over  2  lakh  consumers  per  day.  The  comapny  aims  to  secure  25  percent  share  of  the  market.    

❑ Indoco  Remedies  to  invest  INR  125  crore  Indoco  Remedies  plans  to  invest  INR  125  crore  to  expand  its  sterile  ophthalmic  facility  in  Goa,  along  with  setting   up   a   Greenfield   Active   Pharmaceutical   Ingredient   (API)   facility   in   Maharashtra.   The   investment  would  also  include  an  extra  pilot  plant  in  Goa  for    finished  dosages.  Funding  would  be  from  a  combination  of  internal  accruals  and  debt.  Indoco’s  domestic  formulation  business  was  14.7  percent  as  of  March  2015,  exceeding  the  average  of  13.3  percent.
