Nitric Acid:

Nitric acid ( HNO3) known as aqua forties and spirit of nitre, is a highly corrosive and toxic strong acid.

2 H2O + 4 NO2 + O2 → 4 HNO3

If the solution contains more than

86% nitric acid, it is referred to as

Fuming Nitric Acid.

USAGE

Nirtic acid is used in many industries , research laboratories. It’s used after processing and without processing. Nitric acid is mainly used in the production of fertilizers. This is massively used in food and medical industries. It is also used as AQUA REGAI in purification of gold and chemical synthesis.

Massive Usage of Nitric Acid: Rocket Fuel: Red fuming nitric acid, white fuming nitric acid are

used in rocket fuel. Chemical Reagent: This acid is used in determination of metal

and the grade of metal. Nitric acid is also used in the purification of gold.

Wood Working: Nitric acid is often used to artificially age pine and maple.

Nitric Acid is also used with other chemical in cleaning food and in dairy equipment primarily to remove precipitated calcium and magnesium.

POLLUTION

Nitric acid is mainly found as liquid form. The waste product of nitric acid is Oxides of Nitrogen which is found as gas. Nitric acid plants produce nitrous oxide (NOx) which is 310 times more harmful than carbon dioxide. Nitric acid pollutes the nature in two ways

Air Pollution Water Pollution

Air Pollution: Nitric acid pollutes air by constituting acid rain formation. Acidic gases (Nitrogen Oxide and Sulphure Dioxide) are blown by the wind after they are given off to the atmosphere from vehicles, power stations, industries. Then these gases dissolve in rain water to form acid rain. All these happen by the emission of nitrogen dioxide from nitric acid.

;

Water Pollution: Nitric Acid plants discharge the waste product of nitric acid into water body which makes the water undrinkable and dirty.

PREVENTION

Consciousness is now highly essential to prevent the pollution caused by nitric acid. Thereafter following steps are helpful for preventing the pollution :

Installation of pollution control equipments in industries and nitric acid plants. Refining the waste product of nitric acid before discharging into water body. Using compressed natural gas in vehicle to reduce the smoke discharged from vehicle. Tree plantation

10

CONCLUSION…

People, States, Local agencies should follow the pollution

control system. People should be conscious and more aware.
