This is a piece from Utagawa Hiroshige’srepresentative series. “Fifty-three Stationsof the Tokaido”, published from 1832 to1833. Oiso was the 8th station, located inpresent Kanagawa Pref. In the rain,travelers wearing a woven hat rushed tothe town of Oiso Station. Soga Juro, well-known in kabuki plays also, lost his life onMay 28th. From the episode that hisgirlfriend, Toragozen, dropped tearswhich turned to rains, the rain in June is called “Tora-ga-ame”.

Toshusai Sharaku was an ukiyo-e painterknown for his portraits of kabuki actors.His active career as a woodblock artistwas from May 1794 to March 1795 and hisoutput came to an end as suddenly andmysteriously as it had begun. Heredepicted is Ichikawa Ebizo as TakemuraSadanoshin, a character of the play “KoiNyobo Somewake Tazuna.” Like thisartwork, portraits showing the upper halfof the body is called “Okubi-e”.

The blue central figure at the left side isVajradhara. The red central figure on theright side is Vira Vajradharma. Slightlyabove the two central figures is a Tibetanlama, who is likely to be Ngorchen Kunga Zangpo, the founder of the Ngorsub-school of the Sakya Tradition.

The original mandala of this replica isfrom Ngari in West Tibet (late17c-early18c). Ngari district, the most western partof Tibet, was where an ancient kingdom ofGuge that focused on reconstruction ofBuddhism had once enjoyed prosperity. Inthis former center of western Tibet,colorful murals from about a thousandyears are preserved in the temples thatbecame cultural heritages. This mandala is strongly influenced by the Gugetradition and also receive an influence of Persian arabesque patterns, and thegods are also decorated with turquoise colored arabesque.

The title translates as “ Pine, Bamboo,Plum”, the trees depicted in the landscapeprint. Matsu, Take, Ume appearthroughout Japanese art, literature andfolklore and as the symbols of resistanceto hardship. Both pine and bamboo remain evergreen in winter, while theplum is among the first trees to blossom, even with snow on the ground,signifying a bright future.Artist: Toshi Yoshida,1911-1995 was the eldest son of woodblock artist HiroshiYoshida, patriarch of the famed Yoshida woodblock print-making family. Likehis father he undertook extensive world travels to such destinations asAmerica, Canada, India, Africa, Australia and even Antarctica, chronicling histours in art. Most of his print subjects are focused on landscapes and scenes offading “ Old Japan”. Toshi reached the same level of fame as his father , hiswork in the collection of famous museums.

Toyohara Kunichika is a Japanesewoodblock print artist who workedsuccessfully from the end of the Edoperiod to the Meiji period. This printshows the four Kabuki actors in the playUme Kyôdai Naniwa Senki, performed atthe Nakamura Theater in the first monthof 1872. This scene is known as “Keppan-dori (Blood oath requirement)” fromthe famous story “Nanba Senki (Tales from the siege of Osaka).” The characterdepicted on the left panel is Kimura Nagato no Kami (Kimura Shigenari). Thisyoung samurai is giving back the blood oath without flinching to the old craftysamurai on the center panel, Tojo Ujiie-ko (Tokugawa Ieyasu) who is on theenemy’s side.

Nori from Tokyo Bay wasprize as the best in Japan during that eraand harvested at low tide. The nameSamezu, or “Shark Sandbar” in Japanese,comes from an ancient legend that ashark washed ashore here in 1251 andfishermen found a statue of the BuddhistKannon, the deity of mercy, in its belly.
