  • Ninety-third Critical Bibliography of the

History of Science and its Cultural Influences (to January 1968)

The ninety-third Critical Bibliography* is the four- teenth to be organized and published under the system of classification established in 1953. The most recently published Critical Bibliography was CB 92 (Isis, 1967, 58(5): 1-143). The present bibliography includes 3345 citations primarily covering work published in 1966 and 1967. The main purpose of the classification of the Critical Bibliography has always been, in the words of its founder, George Sarton, "to satisfy the needs of hist- orians of science in general, rather than those of historians of particular sciences." It will be observed by an examination of the table of contents which follows this introduction that the classification is both chronological and by subject matter. Inasmuch as preference is given to the former, the reader who wishes to find all of the works dealing with a particu- lar subject will find it necessary to examine several sections of the bibliography. The present bibliography is the first to be edited at the University of Wisconsin. Three changes have been made: (1) each citation has been given a particular number, so that the index will refer to a single item rather than an entire page; (2) the method of citing books has been changed, with the result that only books which have not been cited in earlier Critical Bibliographies are entered in the classified section, and these citations do not include references to re- views the book may have received either in 1967 or previously; (3) a book review section has been added at the back of the bibliography for the use of the reader wishing to find reviews of a particular book- whether a new book or an older book cited previously. In this alphabetical section, the citations have been kept as brief as possible, since all these books have been cited fully either in the present classified section or in earlier ones. These abbreviated citations are followed by references to reviews.

*This Critical Bibliography is endorsed by the History of Science Division of the International Union of the History and Philosophy of Science.
