  • Ninetieth Critical Bibliography

of the History of Science and

    Its Cultural InfluencesI

    (To 1 January 1965)

The Ninetieth Critical Bibliography is the eleventh to be organized and published under the system of classification established in 1953. The most recently published Critical Bibliog- raphy was CB 89 (Isis, 1964, 55:475-605). The present Critical Bibliography includes about 2,750 citations, primarily covering work pub- lished during the year 1964, the principal ex- ception being the inclusion of books published earlier but reviewed in 1964.

The main purpose of the classification of the Critical Bibliography has always been, in the words of its founder, George Sarton, "to satisfy the needs of historians of science in general, rather than those of historians of particular sciences." It will be observed through an examination of the table of con- tents which follows this introduction that the classification is both chronological and by sub- ject matter. Inasmuch as preference is given to the former, the reader who wishes to find all of the works dealing with a particular subject (e.g., chemistry) will find it necessary to examine several sections of the Bibliography.

In the field of the history of medicine we have this year had the advantage of the assist- ance of the History of Medicine Division of the National Library of Medicine. Mechanized searching of the vast journal holdings of that library yields a list of historical articles from which a selection has been made. The total number of such entries is slightly higher than in recent Critical Bibliographies.

This Critical Bibliography has been made possible by the assistance of a number of co- operating scholars, among whom the following have undertaken systematic examination of particular journals or of subject-matter areas.
