Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 4

Pastor’s Column Fr. Thomas Keller

Most parishes tried to push through the first few weeks and then months of the mandatory government lock-down. We cancelled public events to “slow the spread.” Luckily for Assumption, we already livestreamed our Masses and our audience of 5 to 20 people per Mass shot up into the hundreds and in some cases, even the thousands. But live streaming Masses isn’t enough to keep us all connected with Christ and His Church for an extended period of time. We are grateful that we can have public Masses and some other limited events, even if it is with a smaller capacity. Of course, our ability to meet can change if the coronavirus continues to spread and it is apparent to everyone that the epidemic is not going away.

So, the question is - how can we continue the work of Christ when we are prohibited from meeting in large groups, and large segments of our community do not feel safe to meet in our normal manner? How can individuals in vulnerable populations participate in the sacraments or resume their place in parish organizations? Some groups like ACTS may be on hiatus for a while, but other groups need to meet for the good of the parish and the good of the Church. There are two realistic options: “Limited socially distanced outdoor events” and “hybrid in-person and online events.”

“Limited capacity socially distanced outdoor events” means that we can meet outdoors in group of 50 or less as long as everyone agrees to maintain 6 feet from each other. We could require sign-ups to schedule a place at these events and limit them to individuals in vulnerable populations since we currently have other regularly sched-uled events for those who can participate in them. We could schedule: 1. Occasional outdoor weekend evening Masses for small groups of vulnerable parishioners who can’t make it to our regularly scheduled Masses. 2. Occasional outdoor Adoration and confession times for the same group of people. 3. Outdoor faith sharing and social meetings. Our youth ministry meets regularly outdoors on the parking lot and some members of our senior ministry meet outdoors in the courtyard. We had some very successful outdoor movie nights. All these meetings comply with social-distancing guidelines, so we could expand these options for more groups.

“Hybrid in-person and online events” means that some parishioners may be at Assumption in the Church Lower Level or the Rectory Basement and others may be participating in the same meeting at home via the Internet. Deacon Dave Schaefer recently equipped these rooms so they can host hybrid in-person and online meetings. Some possible hybrid meetings include:

1. Inside Catholicism. This was very popular last year. This year, we will focus on the interior spiritual life of a Catholic. This is particularly timely as it is difficult for everyone to gather together to pray. 2. Parish Meetings. Parish Council, Finance Council, St Vincent de Paul Society and our other committees that have been on hold since March can begin meeting again in the hybrid style. 3. “Cyber Seniors.” Our Senior Ministry is working on a program to assist seniors who need help with technology to connect online with family, friends and other parishioners. We will announce more information about Cyber Seniors as it becomes available.

As soon as we have more information about these events and programs, we will publish it on our website and in the Good News Messenger. We also plan on occasionally publishing a parish newsletter during the ongoing pandemic on Flocknote to help connect parishioners.

In the meantime, pray for an end to this pestilence!

God bless, Fr. Keller

6:00 - Arrive & claim your goodie bag

6:30 - Celebrate Outdoor Mass on the school parking lot

7:10 - Move to the School Courtyard to enjoy your catered, boxed meal

8:00 - Enjoy the movie, “Cyber-Seniors”

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 6

Statistics as of August 5, 2020: Population of St. Louis County: 998,692 COVID-19 cases: 13,788 (1.37%) Population of 63128 zip code: 29,832 COVID-19 cases: 277 (0.92%)

COVID-19

Information

Our zip code (63128) has 88 more positive coronavirus cases that last week. For comparison, it took about 4 months to just to get to 75 cases. Then it took another month to add 100 additional cases. Now we have nearly as many new cases in a week. So, please be aware, although only about 1% of the 63128 population has been infected since March 15th, the virus is beginning to exponentially spread in our area. Some Assumption families are voluntarily isolating because a member of their family had come in contact with someone with coronavirus or one of their family members tested positive themselves. But they were not on our property after exposure, so no contract tracing is necessary. If you are infected with COVID-19 and have been on Assumption property while you were contagious, even if you have not had symptoms; please contact Fr. Keller so we can assist with contact tracing. Your anonymity will be respected.

St. Louis County Coronavirus Social Distancing Guidelines: - Building capacities are limited to 25%. (See below for current room capacities.) - Face masks must be worn for all events including worship services. - Individuals or non-family members should maintain a six-foot separation.

Archdiocese of St. Louis Coronavirus Directives: - The obligation to attend Sunday Mass remains temporarily lifted. - Vulnerable individuals and those over 60 years old should take additional precautions. - Holy Communion may be received on the tongue in the main aisle from the priest. Ministers on the side aisle will distribute Holy Communion in the hand. - The Presentation of Offertory Gifts, the Sign of Peace, and Communion under both kinds are suspended, and Holy Water has been removed.

Assumption Parish Coronavirus Accommodations: - Baskets for donations and hand sanitizer are located near the doors of the church. - Free masks are located in the back of church. - Alternating pews are used to increase distance between worshippers. - Masses are livestreamed and most recent information can be found at www.assumptionstl.org.

- Funerals, baptisms, weddings, and parish meetings are permitted provided St. Louis County social distancing

guidelines are followed.

- Funeral Visitations are permitted for one hour prior to the Funeral Mass.

- Funeral Luncheons and other events serving food are permitted in the Church Lower Level. However, at this

time, only catered food is permitted. Food must be box-lunch or served by caterers. Potluck, or self-serve

buffets and drink bars are not permitted.

- Due to the configuration of the confessionals, all confessions are heard behind the screen.

- Outdoor meetings may be scheduled in the School Courtyard and the Outdoor Classroom. Please bring your

own chairs.

- The Church Lower Level and the Rectory Basement are available for “hybrid in-person and online” meetings.

Important Announcement

Regarding

“Protecting God’s Children”

The Archdiocese of St. Louis has developed a new system for safe environment compliance called Prevent and Protect STL. Everyone ministering to minors and vulnerable adults in the Archdiocese are required to register in the new system. This includes all clergy, employees and volunteers who are currently in compliance and those new to service. All new registrants will need to attend a Protecting God’s Children workshop. For those who have already attended a Protecting God’s Children workshop, your previous training date will transfer to this new system. In addition, every-one will register for an updated background screening, view two online training modules on abuse reporting and the Code of Ethical Con-duct, and agree to the updated Code of Ethical Conduct. All information and links can be found on the parish website on the Education & Activities for Children tab under Safe Envi-ronment. If you have any questions, please contact Diane Higgins at (314) 487-6520 ext. 1236 or email [email protected].
