Catholic Heart Work Camp 2017

This year, forty seven campers and chaperones from St. Eulalia, St Margaret, and St. Charles Churches partic-ipated in a service mission in Hartford, Connecticut. The group this year was joined by other campers from seven parishes as far away as Maryland and Illinois to serve the needs of the community of Hartford and en-gage in spiritual development and enrichment. This year’s theme is ”Rooted in Christ” i.e., being rooted in your faith. The program focused on one’s person-al relationship with Jesus as a young Catholic. Our young people put their faith practice to work as they par-ticipated in daily work projects and nightly faith building activities. We were blessed with the service and assistance of three young priests who, through their work, engaged our young adults with energy, and humor. In addition to daily Mass, the campers took part in a beautiful adoration service, daily prayer, and a spiritual service called “four corners.” The work projects included a broad range of tasks, from helping individual home owners with repairs to help-ing an understaffed food kitchen, and even being part of a river front park restoration project! Being in Hart-ford gave our campers an opportunity to see the needs so close to home. Many of our campers expressed how

good it felt to be part of an energetic faith community of people like themselves. However, those campers who felt it was difficult to express their faith in their home towns found the theme of being “rooted in your faith” an instrumental message for them to take home.

The Storm On the Sea of Galilee

The image on the bulletin cover is enti-

tled The Storm On the Sea of Galilee. It

was painted by Rembrandt van Rijn in

1633 and it was his most striking narra-

tive painting in America. (It is one of several masterpieces

which were stolen in 1990 from the Isabella Stewart Gard-

ner Museum in Boston.) Note that in the boat, along with

Jesus, are the twelve apostles, and one other. Which one is

not an apostle? Is it meant to be you?

PARISH MINISTRIES AND ACTIVITIES

Prayer of Peace

for Father Dick Messina

On Wednesday, August, 16, a fourth Taizé Prayer Service will be celebrated for peace in our hearts, and that of retired pastor, Fr. Dick Messina who has a terminal illness. The ser-vice will be held at 7:30PM at St. Mary Church, 158 Washing-ton St., Winchester. The Taizé prayer service brings us to-gether as a community to share our feelings of grief and sad-ness. Father Dick celebrated his final weekend Mass on Sunday, July 2 after twenty-four years of service to the people of St. Mary’s. He recessed to the singing of the choir and the loving applause of the congregation. He has retired up to his resi-dence in Maine where he will be receiving hospice care. God Bless You, Father Dick. You are in our prayers. Cards may be sent to St. Mary Church and they will be for-warded to Fr. Messina.

The next meeting is Sunday, August 6, 6:30PM-8:30PM in the McGann Conference Center. Call to pre-register: 617-699-7702, or email: [email protected]

THE UNBROKEN WORD

Having just returned from a week in the Berkshires with over 200 teens, I can confirm that the Holy Spirit is very active in Western Massachusetts. Pope Francis and Fr. Savage are often heard using the words “meeting people where they are.” Well, last week, a large number of teens were visiting Lakeside in Pitts-field, MA at a program which has a long history with our parish. This program was designed to meet teens exactly where they are. C.A.M.P.S, or the Christ As My Personal Savior event has now been running for 34 years! The founders are still actively involved. Fr. Savage himself went on many CAMPS retreats during those years. As some-one who is always looking for doorways which lead to the Holy Spirit, I can certainly now appreciate why Fr. Jim is such a supporter of these type of retreats. During the course of the week, the teens and staff en-countered an early morning optional swim (7:00am, and not optional at all), morning prayer by the lakeside, competitive games in and out of the water, oodles of singing and worship, evening Reconciliation and the Eucharist. Speakers were flown in from around the states. A Disney theme followed the week. (I bet you didn’t know there are at least six scriptural references in Toy Story!) A veritable feast for the body and soul. A few weeks ago, another retreat experience was made by many other teens from St. E’s at the Catholic Heart Work Camp in CT. Again, a wonderful experience, this time of serving others in need with campers providing physical help. This program also has a large component of daily prayer, worship and the Eucha-rist, linking our need to serve with our spiritual welfare. Thank you for all the teens attending, parents who funded them and the volunteers from the parish who donated their week to this important cause. (Mike An-gotti, Jared Blake and Bobby Hillis). We can see the satisfaction, peace and joy on the faces of those who have met our Lord through these re-treats. Retreats which offer an opportunity for both renewal and conversion. The use of retreats, special time away to consider our relationship with God in a community, is one of the most nourishing gifts we can offer to ourselves and to others. Perhaps now is the time to consider a retreat for yourself. Maybe you have never encountered one. If not, please add it to your bucket list! It might be one of the most important gifts you can give. Think about it as going on vacation with God. You will come back refreshed. He does give us a guarantee which He paid for with his life.
