Vanity makes us get dressed in the morning. It’s what brings us from one end of the bar to the other, and why first dates are so exciting.

Vanity is a trendsetter and a style maker. It gave us moving pictures when people decided they must be seen as well as heard.

Without vanity, would we push ourselves as hard as we do? Would we study, train and compete? Would we care who got to the moon first?

Somewhere, someone decided that confidence should have a limit, an arbitrary line drawn by fear and insecurity. On one side of the line there’s pride, and on the other, vanity. But somewhere there’s also a boy too vain to just play guitar in his parent’s basement, a silly girl filled with dreams who wants to move to the big city, an inventor so vain he believes he can make the next big thing, and a doctor who thinks he can cure cancer.

What’s

wrong with

being vain?

Page 8: Nike Alpha

Vanity isn’t just for the thin, chiseled or naturally beautiful. It doesn’t have to hold us back. Vanity can lift us up and be proof that we like what we see in the mirror, no matter what anyone else thinks.

If cleanliness is next to Godliness, why should caring about your health and appearance be a sin deadly enough to make a list of seven?

We all have the potential to be strong, inside and out.

We all have the right to like who we see looking back in the mirror.

We can all be vain. And maybe we all should.

Vanity is confidence without apologies.

I’m a tyrant.

Whiplash.

Something that deserves to be roped off.

A Homewrecker.

Know that dull ache? Yeah, that’s me.

I’m one thing one second.

And whatever I feel like the next.

And you?

Well, you’re a lot like a puppy with his head out the car window.

Just happy to be along for the ride.

“most people dislike vanity in others, whatever share they have of it themselves; but I give it fair quarter, wherever I meet with it, being persuaded that it is often productive of good to the possessor, and to others who are within his sphere of action.

Page 64: Nike Alpha

And therefore, in many cases, it would not be altogether absurd if a man were to thank God for his vanity among the other comforts of life.”

–Benjamin Franklin
