Anyone with some Japanese and English language experience is welcome to attend. For 30 minutes during our Nov. 14th meeting, special guest Sachiyo Ito will demonstrate Nihon Buyo, Japanese classical dance, and speak about Japanese dance as it relates to the language and culture of Japan. After the demonstration, we will move back to the usual activity of practicing conversational skills. Nihon Buyo (日本舞踊) originated in the 17 th century (early Edo period) and has origins in Kabuki theater. The movement in this theatrical dance form are a means of storytelling, particularly of classical literary texts. Instruments such as the koto and shamisen accompany the dance, as well as complex costumes and decorations. The word buyo comes from the words (mai) and 踊り (odori), which refer to two styles of Japanese dance. Mai is a style where the feet rarely leave the floor, whereas odori is a more energetic and less constrained dance, including larger movement, steps, and leaps. RSVP required to [email protected] or 212-715-1293. Admission $5 (cash only), free for students with valid university I.D.; refreshments provided.
