Nighttown Student Discount PolicyStudents up to age 26 are 1/2 off the regular price. Certain select shows have no discount based onarrangements with the artist. On evenings when thereare two shows (i.e. shows at 7 & 9PM), the discount isonly good for the second show. Loren and Mark first met in 2005 when they spent a few days working with the greatTommy Emmanuel at Jorma Kaukonen’s Fur Peace Ranch guitar camp. Mark was acollege kid, just completing his degree in classical guitar at the University of NorthCarolina; Loren was already a seasoned performer, but it was his first serious lookat acoustic guitar. After the workshop, Mark visited Loren and they spent some timepicking guitar – and picking each other’s brains.

In 2009 they met again in Nashville at the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society (CAAS)convention, an international gathering of hundreds of guitarists. That set the stagefor the 2010 CAAS convention where they were on the schedule of performers.Though they were not originally listed to play on the big Saturday night finale, theywere added to the show due to popular demand from those who heard themthroughout the week.

Loren and Mark's varied repertoire of original and arranged music consists ofstunning guitar duets as well as songs, giving them a wide appeal.

Their music is influenced by Bluegrass, Jazz and Western; their style of guitarplaying is largely built upon the thumb-picking techniques pioneered by guitargreats Merle Travis, Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed, and their songs feature Lorens

Barrigar and Mazengarb have toured extensively in both the USA and in Europe,and their fan base is rapidly expanding. They recorded their first album togetherthe summer of 2011 which won a SAMMY (Syracuse Area Music Awards) for BestAlbum at the Northeast Music Industry Conference, and their second album Onwardalso won a SAMMY. The title track 'Onward' won first place at the InternationalAcoustic Music Awards (IAMA) for Best Instrumental. Their most recent album is livefrom their 2013 tour of Europe

Loren and Marks live performances feature not only their spectacular technicalgrasp of the guitar, but also their outstanding musicality and ability to bespontaneously creative. The interaction between the two musicians is as much afeature of their shows as is the world-class guitar playing that they both display.

North Coast Singer/Songwriters hit the Stage at Nighttown!Singer-songwriter, Tracy Marie is about to release her latest Studio recordproduced by David Mayfield. Together her and Mayfield selected 11 Tracks of hermore than 150 title song catalog including the title track, "Beautiful Mess". TracyMarie, a native of South Euclid has been performing original music as well aspaying tribute to her favorite artists in and around Cleveland since the late 90s withlocal blues bands to more intimate solo acoustic performances where sheaccompanies herself on both piano and guitar. She has also expanded her travelsfrom LA to New York City where she was invited to perform with Buddy Miles and inNashville where she performed her own original song at the Ryman Auditorium.

Jazz saxophonist and composer Kenny Blake earned critical acclaim and reachedthe top of the jazz charts with his four releases on Heads Up Records. His sound is“soul hybrid” a combination of traditional jazz with modern rhythm and blues.Kenny Blake's R&B-tinged solos delight fans around the world. Kenny hasperformed throughout the United State, Europe, and South Africa as a solo artistand sideman.

In the mid-80's Blake toured with the MCA pop-jazz recording artists Cabo Frio andperformed his compositions on their 1987 self-titled release. With airplay onsmooth jazz and quiet storm radio stations Blake’s 1991 solo release “InteriorDesign” climbed to number 15 on the Billboard Top Contemporary Jazz Albumschart. He again reached the jazz charts at number 20 with the album “Rumor HasIt” in 1992. Blake has released five solo CDs.

Along with Joe McBride, Gerald Veasley Blake performs as member of the Heads UpSuper Band and appeared on their 1998 release.

As a session man Blake has recorded with Pieces of a Dream, Joe McBride, GeraldVeasley, Darryl Alexander, Tommy Price, Bob Thompson, Chizmo Charles, RodneyMcCoy, Donny Iris, Billy Price, Pure Gold, and John Harrison III, and others.

Eric Johnson is a soul survivor. A 40 year career that has afforded him theoppourtunity to travel the world performing with some of the world's greatest jazzartists..Johnson's career began in Pittsburgh's late 60's Rhythm and Blues/Jazz Funkcircuit. After graduating high school, a bold, eager Eric Johnson went on the roadwith legendary organist Brother Jack McDuff. Johnson soon became a popularsideman working with Leon Spencer Jr.,Lou Donaldson,Jimmy McGriff, StanleyTurrentine ,Hank Crawford,Ramsey Lewis and many others. After relocating to New York in 1978, Eric began touring with Jimmy Owens andWillis "Gatortail" Jackson.The association with Owens was especially gratifyingbecause of the exotic locations they would perform.

The year 1993 represented a breakthrough in Eric's career , the release of his firstCD ,"Bumpin In LA" . Due to the success of the CD Eric relocated to the Los Angelesarea. While in L.A. Eric led a popular trio in addition to performing with LA greatsLorez Alexandria and Buddy Collette.

Eric returned to Pittsburgh in 1996 he stayed busy working with local legends WaltHarper and Harold Betters. Also Eric's second CD Makin' Whoopie was released.Eric then reformed his favorite group "The Fabalous A-Team. The turn of thecentury marked anew chapter in Eric’s life, a return to the New York area. Since2000 he has been performing with old friends Dr.Lonnie Smith and Lou Donaldsonon occasion. Most recently Eric has been recording and touring Japan with organistAkiko Tsuruga.

Born in Newcastle, Australia, Nicki Parrott started her musical training at age four withthe piano, and at 15 switched to double bass. She moved to Sydney to study jazz at theNew South Wales Conservatorium of Music where she studied with visiting artists RayBrown and John Clayton. Nicki came to New York in May 1994.

In June 2000, Nicki began performing on Monday nights at the Iridium Jazz Club with thelegendary guitarist and inventor, Les Paul. As part of the Les Paul Trio, Nicki worked side-by-side with guitar greats from Paul McCartney, Slash, Steve Miller to fellow Aussie,Tommy Emmanuel.

Since then she has performed with such notable musicians as Michel Legrand, RandyBrecker, Clark Terry, Jose Feliciano, Bucky Pizzarelli, John Pizzarelli, Dick Hyman, PattiLabelle & the New York Pops Orchestra, Harry Allen, Warren Vache, Marlena Shaw, DavidKrakauer, Ken Peplowski, Ann Hampton Callaway, Scott Hamilton, and Houston Person, toname a few.

In 2007 and 2008, Nicki received back to back honors for Swing Journal’s Best Jazz VocalAlbum (“Moon River” and “Fly Me to The Moon”, respectively).

John di Martino, composer, arranger, and pianist, has recorded many CD's for VenusRecords. Noted for his versatility, John has performed and recorded with such notables asKenny Burrell, James Moody, Joe Lovano, David "Fathead" Newman, Freddy Cole, PatMartino, Paquito D'Rivera and Houston Person.

Mr. di Martino is a sought after musical director and has accompanied Jon Hendricks,Diane Schurr, Kelly Smith, Alexis Cole, and Billy Eckstine. John's talents as arranger andpianist can be heard on recordings with vocalists: Gloria Lynn and Grady Tate .

Ken Peplowski

“Since the advent of Benny Goodman, there have been too few clarinetists to fill the voidthat Goodman left. Ken Peplowski is most certainly one of those few. The man is magic.”- Mel Torme

This quote only hints at Ken Peplowski’s virtuosity – not only is he an outstandingclarinetist and saxophone player, but he’s also a charismatic entertainer who has beendelighting audiences for over 30 years with his warmth, wit, and musicianship.

“When you grow up in Cleveland, Ohio, playing in a Polish polka band, you learn to thinkfast on your feet”, says Peplowski, who played his first pro engagement when he was stillin elementary school.

After a year of college, Ken joined the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra under the direction ofBuddy Morrow. “Buddy heard me with my quartet at a Cleveland jazz festival along withTeddy Wilson’s trio and the Dorsey band, and made an offer right then and there for me tonot only play lead alto, but to have a feature spot on the clarinet with the rhythm section.

In 1984, Benny Goodman came out of retirement and put together a new band, hiring Kenon tenor saxophone. “I think Benny was as great a figure to the clarinet as LouisArmstrong was to the trumpet.

Peplowski wound up signing with Concord Records and recorded close to 20 albums as aleader.

Amanda WalshAmanda Walsh has been playing piano and violin since she was seven years old.Her training began with Anita Pontremoli, Head of Collaborative Piano at TheCleveland Institute of Music. Amanda also studied violin with Helen Richards at TheCleveland Music School Settlement. In 1998, she graduated with a Bachelor ofMusic in piano performance from The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatoryof Music.

In her late 20s, she discovered a passion for songwriting, combining her love offiction and poetry with her love of unpredictable chord changes and dreamy pianopassages. Her influences include Claude Debussy, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, andNina Simone. She recently released her first solo album entitled "Magic is Real,"which debuted at Nighttown and various other venues in Northeast Ohio. Rick SzekelyiRick Szekelyi, a resident of Cleveland Heights, has played guitar since he waseight. Rick performed in various band during his teens and throughout college, butgave it up for family and career in his mid 20s. Since turning 60, Rick hasdeveloped a serious interest in songwriting. In pursuing this path, he has had theopportunity to work with a number of songwriters including Steve Earle, BethNielsen Chapman, Mary Gauthier, David Wilcox, Jonatha Brooke, and Don Henry.This made him recognize that in order to hone their skills, songwriters needopportunities to gather and share their art with one another and the public,regardless of their stages of development. Subsequently, Rick began hosting openmics. He started one in 2015 at the Stone Oven and continues to host one today atHeights Music Shop. He has also been hosting Songwriters’ Rounds since 2015 atvarious venues, including The Barking Spider, The Bottlehouse Brewing Company,The Blue Rock Café, The Beachland Ballroom, Heights Music Shop, and Nighttown.

A.J. Croce has been inextricably linked to a version of his own story by virtue of hisname. He’s experienced a lifetime of comparisons to a father he lost at age two,whose music bears little resemblance to his own output yet still serves as areference point despite the years that have passed and the many iconic mentorswho have stepped in to offer their counsel, creativity, and endorsement throughouthis long career.

It’s curious that it now feels necessary to include the reference, as enough time haspassed that a new generation of tastemakers and journalists might not know whoJim Croce was — that he was a golden-voiced everyman, a singer-songwriter-guitarist who died too soon, leaving one of pop music’s most beautiful andmemorable ballads (written about a young A.J.) in his wake.

Croce the younger, on the other hand, is a piano man, first and foremost, and avocal stylist second. His muted growl pulls from a host of American traditions andanti-heroes — it’s part New Orleans, part juke joint, part soul, but somehow evokesNew York, a continuum where John Lurie meets Lou Reed. He is further a

Also making appearances areGrammy Award-winning country artist Vince Gill, Steve Cropper (Booker T. & theMGs, Blues Brothers, author of many Stax hits), the McCrary Sisters and the MuscleShoals Horns.

Croce has lived longer now than his father did — at 45, he is 15 years beyond theage his father was when he died. With Just Like Medicine (due out August 11, 2017on Compass Records) an authentic version of his story, which contains bothunimaginable sorrow and many blessings, can be felt and understood.

A.J. Croce’s nine albums have been released via both major and independentlabels, and have charted 17 Top 20 singles and all nine albums on the radioincluding on Top 40, Americana, Independent, Blues, and Jazz. A virtuoso pianoplayer, he has performed at a TED Talk and gave a master class at the University ofBarcelona. Croce has also performed on major talk shows and news programsincluding The Late Show, The Tonight Show, The Today Show, CNN, MTV, and VH1.

Originallyformed when Hooper lived in Boston, the band has evolved through tours andrecording in the USA and Asia to develop its own interpretation of this classic artform. Hooper has kept the approach fresh, since returning to his hometown roots inCleveland, OH four years ago and performing all over Northeast Ohio.

Maria Jacobs is a national smooth jazz recording artist whose original song, Pour MeA Cup of Yesterday, is heard on smooth jazz stations across the country, and itcharted on the Groove Jazz Charts.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, this former traffic reporter and disc jockey lived in LosAngeles for twelve years and sang prestigious venues such as The LanghamHuntington (formerly the Ritz Carlton,) The Four Seasons in Westlake Village, Chayaof Beverly Hills, B.B. Kings Blues Club and The Torrance Civic Center to name a few.

She recorded with several well-known artists including Alphonso Johnson andNdugu Chancler of Weather Report. One of the senior statesman of the Cleveland Jazz Scene, organist Eddie Baccus Sr.has set the standard locally since the early 1960's. Like the late great Jimmy Smith,Baccus is a virtuoso on the Hammond B-3, equally adept at soul jazz and bebop. Inmany ways Eddie Baccus Sr. has been to the jazz scene what the late Robert Jr.Lockwood was to the local blues scene; he has been a leader, mentor, and the soulof the community for many years.

Early on his talent was evident as he was linked with another jazz legend,saxophonist Roland Kirk. Baccus and Kirk were schoolmates at the Ohio School ofthe Blind and their sessions together in the old Euclid and 105th area are the stuffof local legends. Kirk would go on to national acclaim before his untimely death inthe late 70's. Baccus stayed close to home and it has been our good fortune.

Eddie Baccus Sr. has been a mentor to countless Cleveland jazz musicians, notablyJoe Lovano, Ernie Krivda, and more recently his son, Eddie Baccus Jr.. His work hasonly been documented infrequently. He recorded an LP with Kirk back in 1962"Feel Real" on Smash records. His other recording is a session done with Lovano inthe mid 1980's entitled "Hometown Sessions". Although he has not gone on togreater glory playing the national circuit, Eddie Baccus Sr. has been the bedrockof the Cleveland jazz scene and his influence on fans and musicians alike has beeninvaluable. Joining Eddie Baccus Sr. for his appearance at Nighttown will be an All-StarCleveland lineup. They are Cecil Rucker on the Vibes. Eddie Sr. has frequentlyappeared with Cecil's group Good Vibes. Billy Artis is on guitar. Many willremember Billy from his days backing the late great Bill Doggett at the Theatrical indowntown Cleveland. Perry Williams III is on drums. Born in 1986, Preminger grew up in Canton, Connecticut. Preminger’s second and third albums as aleader came in 2011 and 2013 while signed to the Palmetto Records label. For Andersen, every big break seemed to be followed by crushing disappointment. The premature death in 1967 of his newly acquired manager, legendary Beatles’mastermind Brian Epstein, took a toll. But six years later, one of the most bafflingevents in the history of contemporary music occurred—a career-changer that stillhaunts Eric from the shadows. In 1973, during a corporate shakeup at Columbiarecords, 40 master recording tapes for a highly anticipated release mysteriouslyand inexplicably disappeared. Never before or after has a record company lost acomplete album. Although the tapes resurfaced 16 years later, his career had beenforever altered by the event—no plausible explanation has ever been given.

In the mid 70’s after finishing a four year program at Berklee College Of Music,Greg played lead alto for the Ray Charles Orchestra for 2 years. In 1978 Gregformed his group Channel One which was a favorite in the New England area andfrom there had the opportunity to play tenor sax with the revived Artie ShawOrchestra under leadership of Dick Johnson from 1986 to ’87.

Following this experience Greg ventured out as post hard bop soloist playing JazzFestivals, Jazz Societies and Jazz Clubs throughout the U.S. Canada and abroad,including most of Europe, UK, and Moscow and Georgia Russia.

He first made his mark internationally through competitions,highlighted by winning the Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet SoloistCompetition (2011), and being a Finalist for the prestigious Thelonius MonkInternational Jazz Competition (2014). After placing in a number of US vocalcompetitions as well (Gentleman Sing, Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival), the stage was setfor his bright career.

Delivering on that early promise, he became a frequent collaborator with musicianssuch as Ulysses Owens Jr., Michael Dease, and Chihiro Yamanaka - recording withthe latter on the iconic Blue Note Records label.

Sought after as a trumpet soloist, he's played in nearly every major big band,including the Christian McBride Big Band, Mingus Big Band, Dizzy Gillespie AlumniAll-Stars, Jimmy Heath Big Band, and Bobby Sanabria's Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra.

In January 2017, Gabrielle released her third album, "Dream Ago" comprisedprimarily of original material co-written with bassist Pat O'Leary. The albumreceived a five-star review from DownBeat Magazine and garnered raves from theHuffington Post, Scott Yanow of LA Jazz Scene and Tony Frankel of LA's Stage andCinema among others. In March Gabrielle and her trio toured the album for tendays traveling from Philadelphia across the Midwest.

She immediately followed the tour with a week in Los Angeles as a master teacherfor YoungArts, a national organization that organizes week-long intensives forartists 14-18 years old and connects them with professionals currently working intheir chosen field. In April Gabrielle was invited by the US Embassy in Azerbaijan toperform at a gala celebrating 25 years of diplomatic relations between the US andAzerbaijan. Gabrielle's group collaborated with Sevda Alekperzade, Azerbaijan'smost prominent jazz vocalist on an arrangement symbolizing the collaborationbetween the two countries, which was performed at the gala for 400 dignitaries andheads of state.

Stravelli's group headlined the 2016 Eleuthera All That Jazz Festival in Eleuthera,Bahamas and headlined an international tour sponsored by the US StateDepartment's American Music Abroad program for 2015/2016. Out of hundreds ofapplicants, the Gabrielle Stravelli Ensemble was one of just 10 bands sent aroundthe world to foster cultural diplomacy through music. The tour took her to Moldova,Azerbaijan, Slovenia and Malta, where her quartet taught workshops andmasterclasses during the day and performed concerts at night. In the fall of 2015she premiered a new song cycle, Rooms of Light, written by world-renowned jazzpianist, Fred Hersch with lyrics by award-winning poet Mary Jo Salter. That projectwas proceeded by a run of solo shows at Feinstein's/54 Below which won her asecond rave review from the New York Times.

Mark A. Russo is a freelance jazz trumpet player and music educator in the greaterCleveland area. He is currently the director of bands at Constellation Schools:Puritas Community Middle Schools and the former Director of the Garfield HeightsHigh School “Music Express” Show Choir Combo.

Mr. Russo is currently promoting his latest project released on Bugles Media; hisdebut album entitled NEW AFFIRMATION, which features all original compositionsand displays some of the extremely talented musicians on the Cleveland Jazzscene. Mr. Russo is one of the founding members of the Cleveland Jazz Revolution(CJR), an organization of improvising musicians whose goal is to create a strongersense of community in Cleveland's Jazz Scene as well as a founding member of theJAZZ INITIATIVE which is an ensemble/group dedicated to the advocacy of jazzeducation in the Greater Cleveland area. In addition, he has been an adjudicatorand Guest Artist for the Stow-Munroe Falls middle School Jazz Festival and theGreen Local Jazz Festival.

As a performer, Mr. Russo has worked for Carnival Cruise Lines and has performedextensively with such local groups as Bobby Selvaggio's Hedectet Jazz Collective(HJC), The AVENUE from Jerry Bruno Productions, The Jerry Bruno Orchestra,Afterdark, The Tony Camarado Band, The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, The DanJo bigband, MOJO Generations Big Band, Transportation Boulevard, The Hermit Club JazzOrchestra, The Swing City Big Band, Sophisticated Swing, Night Bridge and the DanZola Orchestra. He has shared the stage with such artists as Ken Peplowski, CurtisFuller, Benny Golson, Carl Allen, Ingrid Jensen, John Bailey, Marvin Stamm, AllenVizzutti, Randy Johnston, Wayne Bergeron, and Mike Lee. Mr. Russo has receivedrecognition for his achievements in jazz winning Kent State University’s WalterWatson Jazz Achievement Award (2001, 2002) and the BGSU Jazz AchievementAward (1998).

He has also studied trumpet and arranging with Todd Davidson, Brad Goode, JefferyHalsey, Russell Schmidt, Chris Buzzelli, Jack Shantz, Michael Chunn, DennisReynolds, Chas Baker, and Paul Ferguson.

Horace Silver

From the perspective of the 21st century, it is clear that few jazz musicians had agreater impact on the contemporary mainstream than Horace Silver.

Silver worked with Stan Getz for a year, then began to freelance around NYC withsuch big-time players as Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Oscar Pettiford and LouDonaldson. In 1953, he joined forces with Art Blakey to form a cooperative undertheir joint leadership. The band's first album, Horace Silver and the JazzMessengers, was a milestone in the development of the genre that came to beknown as hard bop. Many of the tunes penned by Silver for that record -- "ThePreacher," "Doodlin'," "Room 608" -- became jazz classics. By 1956, Silver had leftthe Messengers to record on his own. The series of Blue Note albums that followedestablished him for all time as one of jazz's major composer/pianists.

Ralph Moore’s last recording as a leader was entitled “Who It Is You Are”—wordstaken from a poem written by NJ poet laureate, Amiri Baraka. Twenty years later,Baraka has recently passed and some folks are asking the tenor saxophonist:“Where it is you’ve been?”

While Moore has not been on the jazz scene per se (he has been living in LosAngeles for the last 20 years), he, nonetheless, has never separated from the purityof the passion that drives him every day. Fifteen years playing tenor in the band forThe Tonight Show with Jay Leno kept Moore on the left coast. During that time,Moore collaborated in a few cooperative jazz quartets — one in particular—aptlynamed “Escape from New York,” featuring some of his Tonight Show co-horts,including drummer Marvin “Smitty” Smith and bassist Bob Hurst.

With The Tonight Show with Jay Leno well behind him now, Moore is poised to getback to what is intrinsically and innately who he is – a jazz musician playing andcreating the music he loves.

Moore spent his college years at Berklee College of Music before making thesojourn to New York in 1981. In the 80s and early 90s, Moore was an in-demandsideman with with Dizzy Gillespie, Horace Silver, Freddie Hubbard, Ray Brown, RoyHaynes, J.J. Johnson, Cedar Walton, Bobby Hutcherson, McCoy Tyner, Roy Hargrove,Oscar Peterson, and Kenny Baron to name just a few. Moore has a number of finealbums out on Landmark (now 32 Jazz) Criss Cross, Concord, Reservoir and Savoylabels.

Josh NelsonBorn and raised in Southern California, Jsoh maintains an active and creativeschedule as a jazz pianist, composer, teacher, and recording artist.

At 38 years old, he has already performed with some of the most respected namesin jazz, including Natalie Cole, Anthony Wilson, George Mraz, Jeff Hamilton, RichardGalliano, Benny Golson, Sheila Jordan, Greg Hutchinson, John Clayton, SeamusBlake, Matt Wilson, Sara Gazarek, Dave Koz, Joe Chambers, Kurt Elling, JohnPizzarelli, Lewis Nash, and Peter Erskine, to name a few.

15 60 75 The Numbers Band has been praised by almost every national musicpublication and several international publications since the beginning of their 30years of live performances and recordings. Many fans are under the impressionthat the band remains obscure by choice. In fact, they have never been offered acontract from any recording company in the industry, ever.

The music "cannot be categorized", "it is undefinable", "too original". The musicindustry is not about music anymore. It is about selling products the public canrelate to. After all, it is a business. Even "alternative" music has become a label. Thefounder of the band, Robert Kidney, explains, "The music industry, the media, andthe tellsusourvision (TV) are defining for the American public what is good music byonly playing and supporting what is profitable. We are taught to disregardeverything that is not familiar. We (The Numbers Band) give the people our best.Our effort goes into being creative, unique and original. We define our own sound.There are no rules because we don't play the game. We are not in it for the game,we're in it for the music."

So, the band continues to create and evolve outside of the "Rock & Roll"establishment. The majority of the recordings were financed by friends who lovedthe music enough to put up their own money. Hundreds of photographs taken ofthe band in different stages of it's existence by different amazing people tell a storyof intense performances, long nights, and the passing of time. Band members havecome and gone, and returned again. Robert sees music as much more than anemotional release or a performance. It is a job, a job for which he demands respectand payment for services.

The title of the band has always aroused curiosity from fans. The fans called themThe Numbers because it was easier than trying to get the figures right. Numbershad not been used in a name before, and the political climate in 1970 was quiteOrwell-ian. Robert choose a sequence of numbers mentioned in a book written byPaul Oliver called The Blues Fell This Morning. In the chapter "The Jinx Is On Me",Oliver describes the Numbers Racket popular in Harlem in the 1950s and howdreams were analyzed as number sequences and used for placing bets. The band'smusic theory specialist, Terry Hynde, also discovered that 15 divided 15 is 1, 60divided by 15 is 4, and 75 divided by 15 is 5. In a musician's world, "1, 4, 5," isreferred to as the "universal progression".

The band resides in northeast Ohio. They have several recordings under their beltand more music than they can afford to release.
