• Nigeria was a former British colony. The name 'Nigeria' (meaning Niger Area) was first suggested by the girlfriend of Lord Fredrick Lugard, the former British Governor-general of the colony in 1914. Nigeria got its political independence from Britain on the October 1, 1996. It is the most populated black country in the world, as well as largest populated country in Africa (about 135 million). It has total land area of 923,768 sq. km. (356,668 sq. mi.) making it the 14th largest country in Africa in land mass. Its coastline, on the Gulf of Guinea, stretches 774 km (480 mi.). Nigeria is bordered by Chad, Cameroon, Benin, Niger, and the Atlantic Ocean in the south. Nigeria

climate

• Temperatures throughout Nigeria are generally high; diurnal variations are more pronounced than seasonal ones. Highest temperatures occur during the dry season; rains moderate afternoon highs during the wet season. Average highs and lows for Lagos are 31° C and 23° C in January and 28° C and 23° C in June. Although average temperatures vary little from coastal to inland areas, inland areas, especially in the northeast, have greater extremes. There, temperatures reach as high as 44° C before the onset of the rains or drop as low as 6° C during an intrusion of cool air from the north from December to February

history

• Before the colonial period, the area which comprises modern Nigeria had an eventful history. More than 2,000 years ago, the Nok culture in the present Plateau state worked iron and produced sophisticated terra cotta sculpture. In the northern cities of Kano and Katsina, recorded history dates back to about 1000 AD. In the centuries that followed, these Hausa kingdoms and the Bornu empire near Lake Chad prospered as important terminals of north-south trade between North African Berbers and forest people who exchanged slaves, ivory, and kola nuts for salt, glass beads, coral, cloth, weapons, brass rods, and cowrie shells used as currency.
