Excavation Work – Code of Practice
Released by Safe Work Australia in July 2012.
Representative's from Commonwealth, State, Territory Governments along with
Australian Council of Trade Unions, Australian Chamber of Commerce and
Australian Industry Groups.
Excavation Work – Code of Practice
Excavation Work – Code of Practice
Shoring - Types
Shielding Will not prevent the walls of an excavation from failing but provides a
safety zone for workers in the event a trench should collapse.
Shoring - Types
Shoring
Supports the walls of trench to prevent the walls from failing. Can
be either by applied pressure or ‘snug’ fit.
Shoring - Types
In addition to mechanical shoring or shielding, you have two other
alternatives for providing a safe environment for workers in the trench:-
Benching or Battering
AS Compliance
• AS4744.1 specifically covers steel shoring.
• Standard developed to ensure worker
safety and supply of consistent quality
product to the industry.
• Standard is explicit as to shoring box
capacity rating – ‘working’ uniform
pressure envelope.
• Construction industry suppliers not all
complying to the standard. Claims around
vague pressure references, pressures at
base of panel or triangular pressure
envelopes and even Type A, B or C soils –
not consistent to standard.
AS Compliance
• Aluminium is not presently covered by
Australian Standards so design is governed by
manufacturers or suppliers own
interpretations.
• Basic rule of thumb in good ground conditions
without any ground water present is
approximately 7 kPa (0.7 tonnes per square
metre) per metre depth.
• Some industry product capacity ratings seem
overly generous.
• Engineering of strut assemblies is especially
paramount in a high clearance configurations.
• TAKE AWAY is the capacity of the shield or
shoring box is ‘black & white’ there should be
no grey. Ask the question!
AS Compliance Equipment Ratings
Sometimes it’s not so simple!
If in
doubt,
ask the
technical
team!
Benefits of Shoring
• Safety for the workers
• Reducing spoil
• Less filling and compacting
• Right systems increase
efficiencies
• Protection of adjacent assets

Engineering & Technical Services
• Coates Hire product development and technical team have put together an
enviable portfolio of shoring products and support services in response to
customer requests and market demands.
• We understand that contractors and consultants are always looking for
best practice, cost effective solutions and simpler ways to shore
excavations, and now Coates Hire are providing equipment and technical
support to achieve those objectives.
• This presentation introduces some unique products never before seen in
the Australian construction market place to allow the safe shoring of
deeper, wider and longer excavations; excavations where strut clearance is
critical, where clear spans between props allows for installation large pre
cast or in situ structures, and where health and safety excellence remains
at the fore front of everything we do.
• Our dedicated team of industry experts with over 60 years of temporary
works design experience, provides cost effective design solutions for the
most difficult of scenarios, and combined with support from other
specialist divisions under the CoatesHire banner we can provide an ‘all in

for use in most site pumping applications.
• A series of internal baffles and weirs that
can assist in the removal of suspended
solids from untreated water.
• Incorporated is a skimming baffle that will
retain any surface oils or floating
hydrocarbons and prevent them from being
discharged.
