Page 3: Nigari Healthy Lifestyle Presentation

We are all aware of the important role that vitamins play in the prevention of disease and protection of health.

But few people know that minerals are also crucial for many body functions including transporting oxygen throughout the body, keeping the blood and tissue fluid from becoming either too acidic or too alkaline, normalizing the nervous system and simulating growth, maintenance and repair of tissues and bones.

Calcium and Magnesium together assist in the prevention of osteoporosis. Since you were a kid, you've heard "calcium builds strong bones." But as an adult you know how tough it is to get all you need.

Magnesium: is one of the complex minerals that make up the bone system and should be balanced with calcium

Calcium:

It helps in building of strong bones, healthy teeth, for chomping on tasty food. Because the body cannot manufacture calcium, you must eat calcium in your daily diet to replace the amounts that are constantly lost. Calcium is also used in muscle contraction, blood clotting, and maintenance of cell membranes

Phosphorus is the second most abundant mineral in the body and 85% of it is found in the bones. The rest of the body's phosphorus is found in the blood. It is found in the body usually at a ration of 1:2 to calcium. It is nonmetallic element that is found in the blood, muscles, nerves, bones, and teeth and is a component of adenosine tri-phosphate

Important for:

Growth, maintenance, and repair of cells, and the production of energy Maintain the pH level (acidity-alkalinity) of the blood Reduces pain of arthritis Speedy recovery of burn victims Cancer prevention Building of strong bones and skeletal structure Maintain heart regularity

Phosphorus Deficiency Diseases:

Rickets, Osteoporosis, Stiff joints and Pain in the bones. It can also cause anxiety, irritability, sensitive skin, stress, tiredness and weak teeth etc.

Phosphorus Deficiency Symptoms:

Weak or fragile bones & teeth Fatigue, weakness Loss of appetite Joint pain and stiffness Less energy and a susceptibility to infections

Potassium is the third most abundant mineral in the body and is considered an electrolyte. Potassium keeps your muscles and nervous system working properly.

Important for:

Regulates heartbeat Maintains fluid balance Helps muscles contract Helps in lower blood pressure Dispose of body wastes Reduces pain of arthritis

Fatigue, Cramping legs, Muscle weakness, slow reflexes, Acne, Dry skin, Mood changes, Irregular heartbeat.

Potassium Deficiency Symptoms:

Sulfur: Needed for structure of most protein, including muscles and hair. Critical role in liver detoxification.

Sodium: Plays a major role in the distribution of water in the body, It is also concerned with the maintenance of fluid volume in the vessels and tissues.

Iron: necessary for red blood cell formation and required for transport of oxygen throughout the body. Deficiency symptoms include listlessness, fatigue and palpitation.

Trace elements: minerals that are found in body in very small amounts.

Selenium: is the protective nutrient that helps your body combat oxidative and pollutant damage and detoxifies heavy metals. Evidence from recent population studies strongly suggests that the intake of food-form selenium may help prevent cancer.

Zinc: plays an important role in proper utilization of calcium and magnesium in cellular function. Zinc also has the important role in helping to promote wound healing and in optimizing the immune defense system. Even marginal zinc deficiencies in teenagers can result in growth and developmental retardations. Zinc is also important for insulin activity, normal taste, usage of vitamin A, skins normal oil gland function (acne prevention) and prevention of sterility in some instances. The amount of zinc required in the diet for optimal health is approximately equal to that of iron. Checking your nails to see if there is a white spot will show if you are deficient in zinc.

Page 12: Nigari Healthy Lifestyle Presentation

Iodine: is essential for the thyroid gland to function properly. The thyroid controls our metabolic rate which in turns affects our weight.

Copper: is required for proper use of iron by the body, it also plays a role in the development of connective tissue, blood vessels, and in formation skin.

Cobalt: Promotes the formulation of red blood cells and serves as a component of the vitamin B-12. Deficiency of cobalt may cause vitamin B deficiencies.

Manganese: is essential for normal brain function. It plays a role in collagen formation, bone growth, urea formation, fatty acid and cholesterol synthesis, and digestion of protein. Molybdenum: it is important for normal growth and development. The deficiency symptom is not well established in human.

Chromium: Aids in glucose metabolism and helps regulate blood sugar by potentiating insulin and serving as a component of glucose tolerance factor.

Who need more minerals?

Pregnant women and lactating mothers: Besides maintaining their own health, they need minerals to help a fetus skeletal structure's growth which needs lots of calcium and magnesium; about 500 to 1,000 mg of iron is donated for fetal growth and storage; zinc deficiency in mother increases risk of spontaneous abortion and less DNA in fetal brain.

Page 14: Nigari Healthy Lifestyle Presentation

Children and teenagers:

Growing children need a lot of building material (calcium and magnesium) for muscular and skeletal structure. Children with iron deficiency show signs of hyperactivity, decreased attention span and reduced I.Q; zinc deficiency in children affects growth and sexual development.

Page 15: Nigari Healthy Lifestyle Presentation

Adult males:

Athletes or men who play sports or body build may have a depressed zinc level which may affect changes in hair and nails, sterility, lethargy, poor wound healing and skin inflammation; magnesium deficiency severely affects cardiovascular and neuromuscular tissues; bizarre facial and eye muscles movements.

Adult females:

Monthly blood loss from menstruation means a 28mg loss of iron; women who workout or exercise need more iron, calcium and magnesium; iron is especially needed for a good metabolism.
