Following on the success of

last year’s campaign, the

Church’s national Advent and

Christmas campaign for 2019 will

again take the theme Follow The

Star, which invites people to

experience the wonder and

excitement of the Wise Men’s

journey to see Jesus.

There are two main resources available, each designed for churches to

give away at Christmas services and events:

� The Follow the Star 2019 booklet offers a reflection for each of

the 12 days of Christmas with a short Bible passage, a simple

prayer and a challenge to reflect or act differently.

� The Follow the Star 2019 leaflet is designed for churches who

wish to promote the campaign to large groups of people. It

contains a short challenge for each day plus QR codes linking to

the full reflections on the forthcoming Follow the Star app.

Both the booklet and leaflet are supported by additional free digital

materials, including suggested activities for families based on each

day's theme. Booklets and leaflets can be ordered at:

Churches are also being encouraged to use the A Church Near You

website to publicise their Christmas services and events. The website

gets more than 12 million page views each year and 81 per cent are to

use the site to encourage church attendance.

After nearly eight years as

Archdeacon of Newark, The

Venerable David Picken is

moving on following his

appointment as the Archdeacon

of Lancaster in the Diocese of

Blackburn.

David, who leaves in mid-

January next year, said: “I will

miss Southwell & Nottingham

enormously. I have thoroughly

enjoyed my time here and met

some wonderful people who it

has been a privilege to serve as

part of God’s ministry.

It is over a month now since the oneLIFE mission took place in the diocese, when churches across the

diocese organised hundreds of events to attract new people. The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu,

was here to support the mission along with Bishop Paul, Bishop Tony, and visiting Bishops from other

dioceses.

Over four exciting days of the mission, churches shared the good news of Jesus with the people in their

communities.

As part of the follow-up to the mission more than 80 nurture courses are running to welcome and support

people who want to explore questions of faith.

There are many stories of people touched by the mission: following on from oneLIFE in the River Idle

Benefice, 16 people attend an Alpha Supper in a local café; 15 of those who attended signed up on the

night to continue to meet, and another joined along the way.

One of the visiting evangelists hosted in Bassetlaw and Bawtry Deanery was an ex-SAS sniper, Neil

Obbard. Someone who had been invited to a Men's Pie and Pint evening recognised him when he turned up

because they had served together in the military. They chatted together, he listened to Neil's testimony and

later signed up to do Alpha.

The Woven network of churches in the north of Nottingham held a week of activities in local schools as

part of oneLIFE: Bluecoat Aspley, Bluecoat Wollaton, Bluecoat Beechdale and Nottingham University

Samworth Academy.

During the week a group of singers, rappers, actors and sport coaches took over assemblies, classes and

lunch clubs with the aim of sharing the love of Jesus.

A youth event at the end of the week at St Margaret’s Aspley was attended by more than 100 young

people; an event at St John’s Bilborough was attended by 400, with more waiting outside to get in.

“I leave at an exciting time for

the diocese but I felt a clear sense

of calling when the new role was

drawn to my attention; I will be

sharing in the work on missional

growth in the churches, in

particular in relation to children

and young people, and that is an

opportunity I could not resist.

“I will also work very closely

with the schools in the diocese

and chair the Department of

Education, as I have done latterly

here.

“It has been exciting to serve in

this diocese, which has a vision

for growth and is thoroughly

engaged in bringing that vision to

fruition under the leadership of

Bishop Paul and the whole team.”

Bishop Paul said: “This is a God-

given opportunity for David and

an excellent appointment for the

Diocese of Blackburn. David has

been faithful in discerning and

responding to God’s call to this

new sphere of ministry and will

be joining a diocese and senior

team that is bold, imaginative and

prayerful as they move forward in

the mission of God among the

people of Lancashire.

“We will hugely miss David and

Cathy’s kindness, joy and

enthusiasm for the work of God,

especially among children,

families and in schools, yet above

all we will miss their gift of

friendship and encouragement.”

David, who was installed as the

Archdeacon of Newark in 2012,

was born in Hednesford,

Staffordshire in 1963 and was

educated locally. In 1984 he

graduated with a BA Hons in

English Literature and Religious

Studies from London. The

following year David completed a

PGCE and married Cathy, also a

teacher. After a short teaching

career, including a time in

Retford, David went to Lincoln

Theological College to study for

the priesthood.

In 1990 David was ordained

deacon and served as a curate in

the Worth Team Ministry in

Chichester diocese. In 1993 he

became a Team Vicar in Wordsley

in Worcester Diocese. Here he

pioneered a church plant and was

a half-time hospital chaplain. In

1997 David was appointed Team

Rector within the same team and

became Area Dean in 2001. In

2004 David moved to High

Wycombe as Team Rector. He

served as Area Dean until

preparing to move to Southwell

& Nottingham and was made an

Honorary Canon of Christ

Church, Oxford, in 2011.

In his spare time, David enjoys

cricket and football and is a

Manchester United supporter, but

takes a keen interest in Mansfield

Town FC as well. His wife Cathy

is a nationally accredited

practitioner for ‘Godly Play ‘.

She is a Trustee of Lighthouse, an

annual Children’s summer event

attended by over a 1,000 children.

David’s last day in this diocese

will be on 16th January, 2020,

when he will chair a diocesan

discernment panel.

He will be installed as the

Archdeacon of Lancaster on 4th

February.

Acommunity choir – the Collingham Singers – who were

invited by a couple to sing at their wedding on 1 June 2019 at

St John the Baptist, East Markham, sang for the Bishop of

Birkenhead at a oneLIFE mission event.

Vicar, the Revd Bronwen Gamble, who married the couple, Peter and

Carole, explains: “The choir were pleased to come and they did a

great job and were highly appreciated. At the end of the service during

the tidying up process, I had a chat with the leader of the choir to say

how much we enjoyed their singing. She said they enjoyed it too and

would be happy to offer a concert for free. So I asked if they would be

available on 14th October for a oneLIFE event and the answer was

‘Yes.’

The choir normally do this sort of thing as fund-raisers for churches

and charities but the PCC agreed to Bronwen’s request that the

concert should be free entry with refreshments and, as part of the

OneLIFE mission, there would be a short gospel presentation, with an

opportunity to give donations, but essentially as a gift to the

community.

Bronwen continues: “Everyone enjoyed the oneLIFE event, including

Peter and Carole and we had lots of good feedback. Not as many

people came as we hoped for but some different faces, one of whom

turned up at our Friday Café this morning.

“Bishop Keith (the Bishop of Birkenhead) spoke briefly before the

last song which happened to be ‘You’ll never walk alone’ – chosen

coincidentally by the choir, as Birkenhead itself is only three miles

from Liverpool FC’s ground at Anfield!

“We are hugely grateful to the Collingham Singers who gave us, for

free, a wonderful evening of music and poems including ‘The Lion

sleeps tonight’ and a rendition of ‘The Lion and Albert.’ The Singers

enjoyed being with us (they liked the acoustics and we have a loo!)

and are waiting for an invitation from us for a return visit… so the

diaries are coming out very soon!”

“The Chorister Experience is a

great chance to come to the

Minster and learn all about our

amazing choir.

There will be singing, games,

and dressing up as well as

meeting our own Cathedral

Choristers over tea, squash, and

cake. Aimed particularly at boys

and girls in current school year

2, the afternoon is also suitable

for those in years 3 & 4 and

parents are encouraged to stay

and take part in their own

activities.”

David Lane, Link Officer for theHoly Land writes:

It was with some excitement

that the congregation of All

Hallows, Ordsall, welcomed

14 of their long-term partners

from St. Paul’s, Shefa Amre

(Diocese of Jerusalem) for a long

weekend visit in July. The group

from Galilee first visited London

and travelled up to Retford on the

Friday evening to be greeted by

their hosts. The Saturday was

given over to introducing the

visitors to Retford, with a tour of

the town and a visit to the Town

Hall, where they were welcomed

by the Mayor.

In the evening the visitors were

invited to a 70th birthday party

given by a member of the All

Hallows congregation and

enjoyed much food, drink,

conversation, dance and

entertainment.

Fr Fuad Dagher, parish priest of

St. Paul’s, preached at the Sunday

morning Eucharist at All Hallows

and presented an olive wood

cross to Revd Sue Caddy. Hosts

and visitors repaired to a pub for

a splendid roast beef lunch before

visiting Eaton to view the village

open gardens.

On the following day the visitors

travelled to Lincoln and toured

the cathedral. On the same

evening the Minster Partnership

Group with St. George’s

Cathedral, Jerusalem, invited the

party to a supper and evening

renewing old friendships at the

home of Dr Hugh and Alison

Middleton. Tuesday saw the

visitors returning to London for

their return flight to Tel Aviv.

Ahli Arab Hospital receives an

award from the United Church

of Christ’s General Synod

In July, the Diocese of Jerusalem

Al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza

was presented with the Global

Ministries Award of Affirmation

for its courageous ministry of

health care provision in one of the

most densely populated places in

the world; Gaza has a population

of almost 2,000,000 Palestinians,

almost three-quarters of whom

are refugees. The hospital has

continued to provide free medical

care during electricity and fuel

shortages, depleted medical

supplies and structural damage.

Richafort's Requiem - The Nottingham Baroque Soloists.8pm, St Mary's Church, the Lace

Market. Nottingham's premier vocal ensemble specialising in Baroque and Renaissance music

return to present a concert of music and readings for All Souls' Day. At the heart of the

programme is Jean Richafort's setting of the requiem mass, one of the great masterpieces of

European music from the first half of the sixteenth century. It will be accompanied by a

selection of readings reflecting the themes of All Souls' day. The concert will last

approximately 45 minutes. Free entry with retiring collection.

money, CCLA are offering parishes an opportunity to discuss and to explore alternatives to

Youth skiing/snowboarding trip

Southwell Minster education administrator Matt Hustwayte is

leading a CPAS Ventures ski/snowboard trip for young people

to Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland, from 10-19 April 2020.

Ski Venture is all about having a great time skiing and boarding, and

finding out more about God, what life is all about and what being a

Christian means.

Along with spaces for 40 young people, there will be a team of

leaders providing food, lessons, entertainment and the evening

meetings. Under 16s £749, 16 and over £789.

and Nottingham to be also Area Dean of Nottingham South in the same Diocese with effect from 16

October 2019.

The Revd Denise Watkinson at present SSM Associate Minister at St Paul’s, Hyson Green in the Diocese

of Southwell and Nottingham to become SSM Associate Minister at the “Woven” churches (St Margaret’s

Aspley, St Leodegarius and St Aidan’s, Basford, St Martin’s, Bilborough and All Saints, Strelley, St John’s,

Bilborough, St Martha’s Broxtowe and Christ Church, Cinderhill) all in the Diocese of Southwell and

Nottingham but will be based primarily at St Martin’s, Bilborough. Licensing date: 7.30pm on 13 October

2019. Archdeacon Phil Williams will officiate.
