    Another month has rol led

    arotand

    but

    th i s

    time

    I

    fee l l ike

    I

    have something

to write about I have been feeling

    lately

that my let ters were getting stale

    and

    very uninteresting

    Paul

    thinks

    I

    am

a question box for a couple of days

    before

    1

    write

    But I

    really

    enjoy

    getting le t ters

    from you asking a

    lo t of

    \

    questions because

    i t

    makes

    the writing

    so much easier

    Last

    Sunday was

    Paul's

    last

    Sunday

    to

    preach for

    the

    Army-we

    hope and guess

    e a ll

    had

    phsicicals

    and

    Paul showed that

    he is

    very tired

    and

    the best

    and

    quickest cure

    would

    be to spend 10 days

    in

    bed doing absolutely nothing e

    says

    he

    will

    try to

    hang on

    unti l

    Christmas

    then

    he

    will

    rest

    This

    not

    having

    to preach

    fo r

    the Army

    should

    give him more t ime

    to rest

    As

    soon as

    we move

    we hope to have

    Bible

    Classes in Koyoen

The Asha church has averaged a baptism every Sunday for the

    past

    7 months

Also another one of the students has begun a new work. He is calling

    i t

    an

    Evangelistic Center

    When

he was asked why he called

    i t

    that he replied

    that

    he couldn ' t ca l l

    a

    church

    unt i l

    he had

    Christ ians to make up

    the

    church

    The

    price

    of building

    materials

    has

    not ccmie down

    any

    at

    all

    In fact

    they

    are going higher all

    the

    time The ste^

    re-inforcing

    rods

    that

    we used in the

    home

for the Clarke cost 5>000 yen a ton; what we used cost 12,000 yen a ton OOI0

    building a center

    in

Kobe for a missionboard there and i t cost 5^,000 yen a ton

    Tile

    for the

    bath

    room

    will

    be

    doubled

    af ter

    the f i r s t of

    Jan and want

    to

    buy

    ours

    before

    then All

    Japanese

    use

    t i le

in the baths and kitchen t

    is

    very

    cheap according to

    American

    price In

    America we

    consider

    i t

    for the well to

    do

only All building have t i le roofs, except the country straw thatched roofs The

    t i le are

    heavy and the

    Japanese use

such flimsy construction under the roof

    that

    the

    Typhoons

    sends

    them r ight down.

They have two kinds of plaster. One is

    mud

    and

    the

    other

    cement The mud

walls absorb the ra in and moisture so that the hcmes are

    very

    damp and cold Only

    the

    better

    hcmes

    use

    cement

    When

    a

    family

    has

    a

    foreign

    room

    they

    always have

    it

    plastered with

    cement.

    We

    are p l a s t e r i n g three

    rooms,

    th e liv in g room, b a t h

and ki tchen. I n the

    r e s t

    of the house

    we

    a r e using

    a second

    grade ply-wood.

    The celotex

    i s

used fo r wall f in ishing but it

    draws moisture

    and warps. You have

    t o pain t or paper

    it While it

    i s cheaper than

    ply-wood

    by the

    time

    you g e t e i t h e r

    th e p a i n t

    or

    paper

    on,

    it

    c o s t

    th e

    same, and

    t h e

    ply-wood

    i s

    b e t t e r

    and

    more

    l a s t i n g

There are two kinds of hard

    wood

    for the

    floors,

one is oak I don t know the other

    now

    ^ight

now we have no choice in hard wood Youttke what you can get which

    is

    s^cpnd grade oak. You

    can

    use a

    very sof t

    wood

    but

    i t i s no pract ical .

    We had had word

    t h a t

    the Mings and Davis

    famil ies

    a re Sbilin g Dec. 17th.

    They are ccaning on d i f f e r e n t ships and

    t o Kobe.

    I f

    it i s poss ible

    we should

    l i k e

    t o

    go

    t o th e boaft t o meet

    them.

    Russell dearly

    loves

    I

    The Soninary

    has

    j u s t moved

happy and enjoying it very much.

    Martha

    nn

    has

    been sick since las t

    ^ue.

    I tried to do everything

    that

    J:

knew to do but i t was a new

    thing

for me She became much worse today so I called

    the Swiss missionary

    Dr. who

    l i v e s

    i n

    Kyoto.

    I called

    him

    i n

    the morning

    and

    as

    Paul

opened the door to go ou t to go to bed I heard him say Well Dr. Come in.

    He had ccaae 40

    miles

    to

    us.

    \le sure needed him. I f I had had a

    car or

    something

    ITwould

    have

    taken her

    to

    him

    but

    I

    d i d n t

    l i k e

    to

    take

    her

    on

    the

    t r a i n

    and

    he

    told

    me

    not t o

    tak e h er

    on

    it

    for

    it

    would make

    her j u s t t h a t

    much

    worse and

    it

wouldn t take him any longer to come to me than for me to go to him. But I was

    thinking of

    his

time and other patients. He told me l a s t nite tha t he was

    going

    to

    a

    missionary

    who

    lived

    80 miles from him

    I t

    sure wouldn t

    do

    to

    have aii

    e m e r g e n c y .

    I

    have wondered j u s t

    what Russell

    and Paula would

    d6 if

    they

    face an

    emergency.

    Paula

    t ipped

    Marth

    Ann over i n her buggy head f i r s t . She

    called

    - 5 -

    to us to

    come

    help

    her. Her

    tone of voice told us t h a t

    she was

    frightened,

    ^^ussell w s standing behind me in

    the kitchen

    I w s peeling potatoes and he

    ^ot

    into than

    faster

than I could e had the baby in his

    rms

    trying to

    comfort

    her.

    Paula

    was

    trying

    to hold

    the

    buggy so that

    i t wouldn t

    to on

    top o f h e r .

This i s the next day and Kawamurasan came ear ly t h i s morning, I have

    been busy

    a l l

    day long

    and am very

    t i r e d

    t o n i t e . I

    also

    have a

    very

    f u l l

    hear t over

    the days happenings. In

    trying

    to

    locate

    the food t h a t the Dr.

    wants

    Marth

    Ann t o have I have m et new

    people

and have fo und them exceeding

ly gracious and kind i n

    helping

    me, a pe rf e ct s tr anger . The Lord c e r t a i n l y

    has ways

    o f

    making us

    r e a l i z e

    how dependant we are

    upon

    Him.

    Paula

    can

    s t i l l make us

    la ug h o ve r

    our d i f f i c u l t i e s . The

    other

    day

    the

    ICg broke o f f

    from t h e washing maching.

    Paul

    and

    I were s t ruggl ing t o

    g e t

maching back into i t s place. e worked and worked

    a t

    and f i n a l l y got

    back and

    a l l

    t h i s time

    Paula

    had been watching without

    saying

    a word. All of

    a

    sudden

    she said, The

    leg i s broken .

    The

    tone of voice that

    she used se t

    us t o laughing.

    e

    were n t ab le

    I t would

have meant not g iv in g

    we are send

    The mother

    of

    one

    of

    attended

    the

^hen she heard what was said

    at

    So she

    t seems t ha t we

    you see

    happen

    we can see a

    Noiv

    do buy some

    They

I t is time that I go t ready and

    Two
