    Is based on the sales t racking Nielsen performs in every Europeanmarket.

    Covers sales in grocery, hypermarket, supermarket, discount andconvenience channels

    Is based on the widest possible basket of product categories thatare continuously tracked by Nielsen in each of these countries andchannels

    Reports on the 4nd quarter of 2010 Week 41, 2010 till week 52, 2010

    NB: Due to the conversion of the Homescan panel in Finland therewill be no data from Finland in Q3 and Q4 of 2010

    Executive SummaryWe ended 2010 with a Q4 result in line with the overall 2010 growth rate

    2009 saw the return of volume growth rates but unfortunately thispositive evolution did not continue in 2010 We are recording volume growth contraction is: Austria, Norway, Spain, Sweden and

    the UK There is volume decline in Germany and Greece for 3 straight quarters. While this is

    explainable for Greece, the German trend is not following the overall economy

    While in some countries price evolution is still negative ( Hungary,

    Switzerland, Poland and Spain) we record price inflation above 3% inthe UK, Turkey and Denmark If food prices were to experience a new spike in the coming months we might have

    some concerns for the volume numbers in the coming quarters

    In the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Ireland the recovery is spectacular. The European consumer is remains rather unsure on the environment.

    The Consumer Confidence index is mostly in a holding mode. Thishesitation is also visible in the growth rates across markets.

    Glossary

    Nominal value growth: Percentage change in value sales (expenditures) as measured by the total basket of reported

    product categories

    Unit value growth ( price change): Percentage change in the average retail price per unit in the total basket of reported product

    categories

    The unit of volume in the basket va ries by category (e.g. litres, kilograms, tonnes, etc)

    The change in average price per unit may result from:

    Price changes of individual products

    Change in the mix of purchased products; more or less expensive products, more or lesspromotions, etc.

    Channel switching; more or less purchases in discount stores, or hypermarkets, or

    convenience outlets, etc. Product or channel mix changes may be induced by price change or may just be the result

    of market dynamics.

    The unit value growth reflects how consumers experience cost of living in their actual groceryshopping behaviour.

    Volume growth: Percentage change in purchased volume (quantity) of products

    The three components are related: ValueGrowth = UnitValueGrowth * VolumeGrowth
