n ie f -nor f Summer Fest iva lThe nief-norf Summer Festival (nnSF) is an interdisciplinary summer music festival, bringing together dozens of performers, composers, and scholars to collaborate on the performance, creation, and discussion of contemporary solo and chamber music. The nnSF offers a think-tank environment on the beautiful campus of Furman University (Greenville, SC) and presents inspiring and devoted performances of modern music, aiming to encourage both appreciation and support for live music and contemporary art.

The festival is delighted to have a full-time performance and composition faculty host separate workshops throughout the duration of the festival. In addition to performance, each year the nnSF hosts two international calls for projects supporting contemporary thought: the first, a Call for Papers for a weekend-long contemporary music Research Summit (nnRS), and the second, a Call for Scores competition for composers. These projects bring some of our generation's brightest and most promising composers and scholars to the festival for interaction with the performance & composition fellows, the faculty, and the community.

RESEARCH SUMMIT

The nief-norf Research Summit (nnRS) is currently soliciting proposals for papers and/or panel discussions for its 2013 gathering, held from June 1-2 at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. 

This year’s nnRS explores the topic of music and technology (post-1945). How did engagements with technologies change music? How did composers and performers build and utilize technological devices to create new music? What devices enabled particular explorations of sound? Which composers cultivated utopian or dystopian views about technology and how did such views affect their music? What larger cultural or historical trends colored the creation and reception of music that utilized technology?

Other topics and questions are welcome and should address the use of technology by groups and figures including, but not limited to, the Sonic Arts Group, Musica Elettronica Viva, Steve Reich, Maryanne Amacher, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pauline Oliveros, The Velvet Underground, David Tudor, Charlotte Moorman, Max Neuhaus, Paul Lansky, Brian Eno, and others.

Papers will be given 20 minutes for presentation, followed by 10 minutes for discussion. In addition to individual submissions, a group of 3-4 applicants may also propose a panel of papers united by a relevant theme.

PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP

The nnSF Performance Workshop offers a concentrated chamber music experience and currently invites applications from cellists, pianists, and percussionists over the age of 18 (including undergraduates, graduates, and professionals). Offered concurrently with the composition workshop and research summit, the performance workshop will provide fellows extensive interaction with the faculty, guest composers, and visiting artists, as well as opportunities for professional level performances of some of our repertoire's finest works including:

COMPOSITION WORKSHOP

The nnSF Composition Workshop offers an intensive experience in composing for percussion in the chamber music idiom and currently invites applications from composers age 18 and over (including undergraduates, graduates, and professionals). Offered concurrently with the performance workshop and research summit, the composition workshop will provide fellows extensive interaction with the faculty, guest composers, and artists, as well as opportunities for hands-on exploration of the large variety of percussion instruments available during the festival.

Composition fellows will compose one work for 2-6 musicians under the mentorship of composition faculty Christopher Adler and guest Evan Ziporyn, and will work with the performance faculty and fellows in the preparation of their work for performance during the festival. Composers will write for percussion ensemble or percussion in combination with cello and/or piano, based on availability. Close interaction with performers will be invaluable for those seeking to gain experience in writing for percussion, while more experienced composers will benefit from the relationships built with dedicated performers of contemporary music. nnSF also hosts an international Call for Scores, open to composers of all levels. The organization's performing ensemble, the nief-norf Project, champions both celebrated and unknown repertoire from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and presents concerts in a variety of formats in an effort to reach the widest audiences possible.
