DIRECTOR ’S NOTES
It is a pleasure to work on a play of this quality. When you work with an Arthur Miller script, you are in the hands of a genius. The characters are strong and the dialogue is finely tuned. Exploring this play with the cast has been an incredible experience.
ALL MY SONS is an American play with the strength of a Greek tragedy. In many ways, the Keller family is royalty—Joe is the King, Kate the Queen, and Chris the Prince. The Deevers are the deposed royalty. The plot follows the rules of time, place and action and the ending is cathartic.
This is a play about responsibility. Actions have consequences. To whom are we responsible? Are we simply responsible to our immediate circle or do we have a responsibility to the world? As the play evolves, watch how responsibility becomes the focal point of the plot.
Speaking of responsibility, I would like to thank everyone responsible for this production. All the students involved—the cast that totally bought into the strength of this show and put up with my picky detailing, the crew that did the technical work (set construction, lighting, sound, make-up) that gives the show the environment and look it needs, and the other adult designers who bring their skills to the show and share them with our students.
I would also like to thank the parents involved with supporting this program as well as our supportive administration and school board who see the value of a quality theatre program. Finally, I would like to thank this year’s senior theatre students—it’s been a great four years. I hope you have some fond memories and learned a few things along the way.
This Theatre Season has been dedicated to the memory of Lon Glaznap, a former English teacher who passed away last summer. Lon used to teach ALL MY SONS. We had many discussions about this play and I knew when I decided to include it in this season that I had to dedicate it to his memory. He would have loved this one—I hope he’s watching.
Thank you for attending—I hope you appreciate our efforts.
