THE FACTORY Ever wondered where Andy Warhol conceptualized and made his iconic Pop art masterpieces? Allow me to take you back in time and into The Factory, Warhol’s New York City studio and hip haven where all the action happened. The Factory was more than just the place where Warhol worked; it was also his breeding ground of ideas, where he surrounded himself with a menagerie of people who served as his inspirations and collaborators: fellow artists, musicians, actors, socialites, drag queens, free thinkers, and many others. The Factory was a place of artistic production.
Johnston Street is a street rich in unsolicited art, talent and inspiration: street art, bohemian cultureand small artisan workshops. How do youmanufacture and capitalize a breeding ground and community for artistic endeavours, inspirationsand collaborations in the same way as Warhol’sFactory?
MASTERS OF ARCHITECTURE- DESIGN THESIS 2014
TRANSPORT AS
The agenda of the project was to re-define the role of the train station from a transient space facilitating primarily transportation into a space that is also socially and culturally encompassing. The train station is a unique social space, acting as a ‘platform’ for the unfolding of the dramas of day-to-day life; whether it be watching commuters rushing to catch the train or overhearing a commutersconversation next to you. As human beings we thrive on the voyeurism of other people.
Train stations are spaces where interaction takes place on a number of levels: sight, sound, smell and communication. The main aim of this project was to capitalize on the notion of transit as a stage for social theatre and architecturally manifest the interactions that occur within the station environment.
SOCIAL THEATRE MASTERS OF ARCHITECTURE- DESIGN STUDIO2014
The aim of this project was to design a new sustainable prototype for mixed income family-friendly affordable housing within the inner city suburb of Kensington. The concept of the project was the cohesive nature of Food. “Food brings people together on different levels” [Giada de Laurentis, Chef]. It is often able tobreakdown the social barriers that exist in society, because as humans we thrive on eating and sharing food despite demographic factors.
This notion is the main concept of the project and manifests architecturally through a series of sustainable outdoor courtyards or growing spaces, from private to public which become the ‘seeds’ of the project which facilitates the environmentally and socially sustainable residential community that is Urban Sprouts.
URBAN SPROUTSMASTERS OF ARCHITECTURE- DESIGN STUDIO2013
The layout of each residential unit is designed to be adaptable with moveable walls allowing for each unit to ‘grow’ as the living situation changes over time.
