wegzubleiben. Genau dieser Tag steht uns am 1. August 2013 bevor und wir
freuen uns schon heute.
Ruft uns an.
Gruß, Euer Kalle Nicolai
Endlich volljährig
Who doesn’t remember their eighteenth birthday? The party, the car, the permission to stay out until the small hours. For our company this momentous occasion is on 1st August 2013 and we can’t wait. Beautifully presented, as a kind of birthday gift, we proudly introduce the 2013 model range across the catalogue’s pages. Inside you will find all the products and related information.
So, what have we been doing for the last 18 years? On 01.08.1995 the „Nicolai Corporation for two-wheelers and engineering“ was born. The goal is still clear today: build the best bikes possible. At two years of age children can already run and by the same age we were also on the move; to buy an old farmhouse and live the dream. Eurobike 2000 was our enrolment at school. The Lambda Nicolai downhill bike, named after the Greek letter, went from victory to victory. At 10 years old boys are breaking the rules and in our tenth year we launched the world‘s first fully integrated G-BOXX transmission bike - the Nucleon TFR. Since then gearbox bikes have been an essential part of our product portfolio and we are delighted to be working on ever faster and lighter gearbox bikes today. We’re not giving any more away just yet though. When 14 arrives, one can choose their own religion, but it is also at this age you can be punished for criminal acts. It’s more than likely that the success of the 2009 Helius AM is still considered by the competition as criminal. Aged 16, one can ride light motorcycles with a maximum speed of 80km/h. Just a coincidence, however, that we built in 2011 the first prototype of an E-MTB.
To pass our knowledge on to young engineers and continuously refresh the gene pool in our company we work a lot with students who spent time with us on internships. With the Nicolai team working at the computer, the welding machine and out on the trails we have created products that reflect our passion 100%. To find out for yourself, why not come and take a tour of our factory? You would be made most welcome; Just give us a call.
18 years old
Enduro-Rennen in Schottland.
The four-link concept with the shock propped up by the down tube has proved successful. The ION20, ION18 and ION14 have already done excellent jobs at world cup events. The time was ripe to complete the family with an ION 16 but the new offspring wasn’t to be just a fill in to make up the range. It was to be a newly designed bike in all areas and a pioneering work for the entire Nicolai collection including zero-stack headsets, post-mount-brakes and 142x12mm dropouts. To get there, ideas were collected for several weeks: frame geometries, travel and the first construction sketches. Following the final product specification drafts we began with the construction in early June and the first prototype was ready by the beginning of August. The geometry was an instant perfect fit. After some adjustments to the construction the rear end of the bike was solid, frictionless and low-maintenance. The ION16 was introduced at the Eurobike.
The new kinematic works; the bike responds immediately. Every single push on the pedals results in acceleration. Shock tuning has been optimised. The back of the bike responds sensitively whilst remaining sturdy in travel. Autumn has arrived and the fine weather has gone. Enduro-races in Scotland. The brake pads and tire knobs are gone within two days but the new bearings run as smoothly as on the first day. The days become shorter. The first snow is falling. The serial production starts. The postman is ringing. Your ION 16 has arrived.

ISCG 05 and the direct mount front derailleur
Almost every Nicolai frame comes with a 05-ISCG chain guide mount as standard. With this option you can choose to mount single or double chain-ring guides or even Hammerschmidt® internal gear cranks. The ISCG 05 mount features easy to repair replaceable inserts. In case of damage you can exchange the threads quickly and inexpensively. Furthermore, you can mount an SRAM direct mount front derailleur that was especially modified from NICOLAI. The models Helius AC, AC 650, AC 29, ION 14 and 18 are equipped with a direct-mount compatible swing arm as standard. These SRAM direct-mount front derailleurs are only available at NICOLAI and only fits into the intended swing arms. The new ION 16 can also be used with a standard high direct mount front derailleur.

Hammerschmidt® Pimp Kit
... more than just the look
Of course it‘s an eye-catcher of a drive-train, sameas our anodised Extra Love parts attract the attentionin terms of frames. But the Hammerschmidt® Pimp Kit is not only eye-candy. It also has two new technicalimprovements compared to its original. The bash guard gets thinner towards the outer end which allows greater clearance for the ankles. Another hidden improvement is the cable routing. While the original Hammerschmidt® cable routing has a straight exit followed by an exposed, bent cable, our optimised cable routing has a perfect NICOLAI downtube design fitted angle. Less exposed parts mean less damage caused by rocks, roots and fallen trees.

Quentin Derbier has proven the ION14 goes fast! Before the qualifiers of the UCI world
championships in Leogang, some believed 4X fullies were inferior to hardtails. And then Quentin finished fifth with the ION 14 fully. It transfers pedal strokes into speed like a hardtail, which has benefits beyond 4X. For starters the rider benefits from a relaxed climbing position making all mountain tours a pleasure. Second, its very progressive rear frame kinematics and the rear shock with some extra travel turn it into a true slopestyle machine. Those pro section jumps of modern 4X tracks, some as far as 15 meters, and drops as deep as three meters on slopestyle are its bread and butter. Not least of all a zero stack headtube and 12mm axle improve its stiffness-to-weight ratio, so we happily issue five years of warranty also for racing.

ION18Our ION 18 has become indispensable in just one season. It’s a real freerider, regardless of whether you have a double crown fork to rush down downhill tracks or a single crown fork for playing around in bikeparks. Many riders value its low weight, considering it’s a long-travel bike and they like the way it climbs, thanks to the NICOLAI-Sram-direct-mount front mech and the 2x10 derailleur system. Some customers have built sub 15Kg ION 18 bikes proving you can climb and descend equally well.
uns bereits einige Kunden vorgemacht.

Vergleich ION 18 - ION 20

Comparison ION 18 - ION 20
At most races last season I rode the ION 18 because it’s a versatile DH bike with a broad range of applications. It gives you clear feedback from the ground and allows playful and active riding due to a 1° steeper head angle and a shorter reach of about 1cm in comparison to the ION 20. The ION 18 turned out to be ideal for German downhill trails, enduro and freeride courses and bike parks. On longer and faster tracks such as the European Downhill Cup and World Cup courses the ION 18 seemed to reach its limits. In this case the ION 20 offers greater smoothness for fast and rough trails with an additional 15 mm of travel, a slacker head angle and a longer reach. The bike is also well suited for a more passive riding style. Who ever is in the situation of choosing between the ION 18 or the ION 20 should include the applictaion and the individual riding style into the decision-making.

Mike Schär fährt seit seinem 11. Lebensjahr Downhill.
Mike Schär has been riding Downhill since the age of 11. He has always been fascinated by Mountain biking and especially downhill in his earlier childhood. His first race was the Rookies Cup, an entry-level racing series within the IXS-cup series, which gives younger riders the opportunity to get a feel of real racing. Then came the 2012 season; it couldn’t have gone any better than this: A victory at Bellwald and Wierihorn and the Swiss Champion title in the DH under 17 class.

desto deutlicher. An geschweißten Rahmen entstehen beim Eloxieren verschiedene
Rahmen
mit gefedertem Hinterbau passen zerlegt in jedes Eloxalbad. In der Liste siehst Du,
welcher Rahmen in welches Bad passt.

Anodising - which colour for which model
In addition to powder coating, a heat fixed coating process that covers the frame with
a durable plastic layer, we also offer coloured anodised finishes. Anodisation is an
electrochemical process in which a thin coloured oxide layer is formed on the aluminium
surface. Anodised parts have got a harder, more scratch-proof surface and a lower weight
than powder-coated or painted parts. However, the oxide layer is thin and can easily be
pierced. Whilst powder coating fills machine marks on a frame with anodisation tooling
marks from the manufacturing process remain visible. When welded frames or welded
parts get anodised, heat induced changes are induced to the material and the different
alloys used in the frame components will result in different hues. Anodisation covers
nothing. It displays exactly how a frame and its parts have been manufactured and
the lighter the anodised colour, the more obvious this is. As different colours require
different sized baths, we can‘t unfortunately offer every frame model in every available
colour. The hard tail frames especially are too big, whereas full suspension frames are
disassembled and therefore don‘t have any colour limitations. The following list shows
the restrictions regarding frame types and colours:
Anodisation colours available for all models:
black, bronze, blue, red, gold, green, purple, titanium, orange, lime green
Anodisation colours available for hardtail frames only:

Vor einem Jahr haben wir an dieser Stelle das Basissetup des Cane Creek Double Barell Dämpfers
vorgestellt.

feedback rider feedback and input we compiled a wealth of experience, which we documented after a long test session with Gino Schlifske from Flatout Suspension. So here is the story to help you with your perfect shock setup.
The test site offered optimal conditions to put the shock and the bikes through their paces. We had everything from long root covered passages and slippery curves to steep ascents. We began by setting up the ION 16. The shock had been adjusted to the recommended settings and after the first test ride around the car park the shocks were adjusted to our personal liking. After the first test lap it became clear that the shock had enormous potential. The grip in the curves was incredible. A lot of effort was needed to make the back tire slide out. On steep descents the shock still bounced a bit. Next, we raised the Low Speed Compression 5 clicks and you could feel the effect immediately: the back of the bike remained steady even with high pedaling frequency and deliberate uneven pedaling. On the downhill, the shock used a lot of travel and felt a little bit saggy. No problem though, the air volume can be reduced with the spacers supplied and this made the shock more progressive.

Next up was the Helius AC 650. Using the same procedure as we did for the ION 16 we adjusted the shock to the recommended sag of 25%. Despite the skinny 2.2 CC wheels, slippery curves on gravel and leaves were no longer tense moments. The back of the bike followed the track perfectly. As a comparison we also tried a 2012 Helius AM with the DB Air. The shock gave the back of the bike a multiple personality. The bike can be setup both for real comfortable riding as well as for aggressive racing. It became clear that so far this was the most easily adjustable and smooth operating air shock for a Nicolai. For you to experience the same on your bike, you can follow these setup instructions.

Nucleon AM / Nucleon E2
Nucleon AM / Nucleon E2
We have combined the successful genetics of Nicolai gearbox bikes from years gone by with the modern versatility of our topseller Helius AM. Rohloff ’s 14-speed-hub, well protected inside the G-Boxx, allows changing as many gears up and down as you like, in any situation. Yes, even without spinning. The high position of the G-Boxx provides greater ground clearance. The frame’s centre of gravity guarantees perfect handling on the trail. The drive pinion does not spin around an extended line of the bottom bracket. We’ve put it a little bit higher and moved it to the left making the frame more efficient in terms of power transfer and more responsive in terms of handling. Can you imagine the centre of the drive pinion? Extend that point from the left to the right side of the frame – it’s the pivotal point of the rear frame. Consequently the chain tension remains constant no matter how much the rear shock is rocking doing away with the need for a chain tensioner. Our patented compound rear hub (COR)
leaves disc and drive-train on the frame when taking off the wheel. This way, the bike becomes a tough high-end enduro, suitable for everyday-use whilst at the same time boasting freeride abilities.
The Nucleon E2 is the big brother of the Nucleon AM. It’s built for downhill only and comes with ION technology to reach 200 millimeters of travel in the rear. The big benefit of downhill gearbox bikes? You can change gears while slowing down when approaching turns without spinning.

HELIUS AC 650
Our Helius AC 650 complements our series with the new wheel standard. To make it very stable, the bottom bracket is below the hub line. This makes you sit more comfortably on, or rather inside the bike. The seat tube has been moved a bit to the front to keep the rear frame short and super intelligent. Those who are open to new standards will benefit from improved grip on epic all mountain tours as well as on technical enduro trails. You will recognize that the 650B is just as agile as the established 26 inch Helius AC.

Seat tube gusset - just decoration or real function
The seat tube gusset allows for a lower top tube thus providing greater stand-over clearance. Whether your seat post is pulled out high, or you’re riding with a heavy backpack and rolling through potholes, the seat tube gusset is sufficiently stable. The seat tube gusset makes sense from frame size M upwards due to the longer seat tubes; S size frames we don’t need gussets.
Insertion depth of the seat post
As hydraulic droppable seat posts are getting more and more popular we are frequently asked about the correct depth of the seat post insertion into the seat tube. Most hydraulic seat posts have a length of 420mm but is this enough? Basically the seat post should at least reach the underside of the top tube at the seat tube / top tube crossing. You should also add the shoe sole thickness and the saddle height to the calculation of your seat post length. Here is a quick example for a Helius AC in size L:
Seat tube: 490mm + Crank arm length: 175mm + Seat post 420mm (Rock Shox Reverb Stealth) + Saddle height assembled on seat post: 20mm
- Seat tube overhang: 122mm - Top tube diameter: 38mm (for all Nicolai frames) - Pedal height: 9mm = Max. Saddle Excerpt: 936mm
Adding these figures, we get the maximum possible saddle extraction of 936mm.Accordingly, a Helius AC in size L with a 420mm seat post will also fit riders with a 930mm leg length.
Seat angle: effective or virtual The ION family of frames and also the 650 and 29“ models from the Helius family have seat tube designs that are different from classic frame designs. They don‘t end on the BB housing but somewhat further to the front on the down tube. This re-arrangement of the seat tube position was necessary to achieve sufficient travel while at the same time keeping the chain-stay short for maximum maneuverability. The seat post remains sunken thanks to the continuous seat tube. To adjust the sitting position we have flattened the seat tube angle a few degrees. To show you that a flatter looking seat tube is still as suitable for long trail riding as the steeper looking one we have prepared a graphic with two different Helius AC types showing both seat positions. As you can see they have almost identical seat positions once the seat post is extended, which means they have almost the same virtual seat tube angle.
HELIUS AC 29er
The Helius AC has been to the gym and is pretty much beefed up for 2013. This is also true for the 26er AC but particularly for the 29er. Up until now it was a gentle trail bike with the great rolling movement through the big wheels, but it felt different to our 26er. The 2013 AC 29er is the better choice for tall riders because they sit more “in” the bike rather than on the bike. In comparison to the 26er the 29er isn’t only better at straight lines but it is also noticeably smoother. We didn’t follow the classic construction guidelines for 29er frames but tried to transfer our successful 26er geometry and riding fun to the 29er format. A short back, a slacker head angle and a low bottom bracket are all the ingredients we need. The ISCG 05 has been improved too, and makes the installation of chain guides even easier. By the way, the threads are interchangeable too. The Helius AC seems to be familiar, not like a 29er but like an enduro bike. In a nutshell, you don’t have to adjust your riding to the 29er because we have adjusted the bike to your normal riding.

135 x 12 Millimeter Steckachsen
135x12 bolt-through system
Most Nicolai frames are now compatible with the bolt-through system. For a number of models this has already become the standard or it is available as an option without a surcharge. Bolt through hubs are stiffer than quick release hubs which is by now common knowledge but we would like to explain why we‘ve decided on the 135x12 mm system in particular (150x12 for ION20). QR-10 quick release hubs may still have a small advantage in weight so it‘s still preferable to use them for XC and marathon riding where, normally, loads are not so extreme. However, with a QR-10 rear hub the interface mainly relies on friction between the hub and dropout - the quick release lever itself is not able to have any real impact on the stiffness of the rear. That’s why, for intense bike use in rough terrain, we recommend the bolt through system. The Nicolai bolt through system is designed around the common 135x12 mm standard. Rear hubs of this standard have got an end-to-end hollow axle with an outer diameter of 18 – 20 mm and an inner diameter of 12 mm. When the bolt is attached the hollow hub axle is pressed with a positive locking force between the drop outs so that the rear hub, and the bolt itself, become integrated, load-bearing, components of the frame. This results in the whole rear end of the bike becoming perceptibly stiffer. Compared to other rear axle systems, which use a fine pitch thread, the Nicolai design comes with a regular metric 12 mm thread that allows easy, hassle-free mounting even in sandy or muddy conditions. The only tool required is a 6 mm Allen key. If the axle should seize after a
long period of non-use, or if the 6 mm inner socket should round off, the Nicolai axle can also be released and mounted with a 17 mm ring spanner. Last, but by no means least, the Nicolai bolt through system is fully compatible with the Rock Shox Rear Maxle® standard.New for 2013: The models ION 16 and ARGON AM come with a 142x12mm thru-axle system.

Helius dropout standards
In 2013 we decided to equip all our Helius models with 135x12mm thru axles as standard. Most hub manufacturers had managed to reduce the weight of their thru axle systems to the level of quick-release hubs, thus no more weight penalty for the thru axle rear-end. For the thru axle system there is a choice between a Nicolai-made axle and a Rock Shox Maxle axle with a surcharge. The 10 mm quick release dropouts and also the Rohloff dropouts are of course still available on request.

PINION OPTION
The Pinion option
Almost all NICOLAI models can be equipped with the Pinion P1.18 gearbox GmbH. The transmission offers 18 speed and an overall gear ratio of 636% - more than any other derailleur system or internal gear hub. The gearbox is perfectly integrated into the bicycle frame and it requires almost no maintenance. The centered balance and the lighter rear wheel have a positive influence on handling, the driving dynamics and rear-end suspension performance. The transmission responds instantaneously to switching commands.
The following models can currently not be combined with the pinion gear: ION 20, ION 16 and Nicolai E-Boxx models.

Bolt on cable guides
Our bolt-on CNC’d cable guides look seriously cool and are available in a range of anodised colours so you can give your frame a personal touch but we should explain the technical reasons that led us to decide on this solution. Whenever a weld is added to a tube, the heat changes the metal structure and leads to marginal weakening of the aluminium compared to its original state. By using a bolt-on cable guide we avoid having to weld the tubing unneccessarily and reducing the strength of the frame. The biggest advantage, however, is the modularity of this system. Through the choice of various designs of bolt-on cable guides, we can offer a number of cable run options. Single mounts, double mounts or offset (double cranked) mounts. The offset mounts can be turned through 180 degrees and, depending on the mounting direction, the cables will leave either at 4 o‘ clock or 8 o‘ clock. This makes for clean bends and gives a perfect cable run when, for example, double Rohloff® cables are routed along one side of the steerer tube. We also have been fitting our Helius frames with special swing-arm cable mounts, in order to minimise the cable bending from the moving suspension. This prevents the wires inside the cable outers coming out of the ends and helps to ensure long term precise shifting without re-adjustment. The black machined Delrin protector on our chainstays is also a cable guide. It both protects the stay and the shifting cable from the chain and with its angled exit puts the cable in a perfect line for the rear derailleur.

Gleitlager – die nächste Generation
0,05 Millimeter.
The next generation of bushings
Synthetic bushings are manufactured through an injection moulding process. The tolerances in this process are +/- 0.05 mm. This is already a very good tolerance. We always strive to be better than just good and as we‘ve got the technical ability we have started to manufacture our own bushings on our CNC turning lathes. This process gives even closer tolerances for much lower stiction and a perfect grease-gap between the bushing and axle. Since 2009 we have already been manufacturing our own ceramic coated precision-ground bearing axles that are also made to extremely low tolerances. The combination of our new bushings with these axles provides a noticeable reduction in play. This means we now need less preload on the bushing unit, giving a lower breakaway torque which in turn means a more sensitive response from the rear suspension.A decisive role is played by the material characteristics of the different materials used to manufacture synthetic bushings. Materials with superior lubricating properties sometimes have a strongly hygroscopic character that can be between 1% and 5% of the material volume. So while the bearing is running freely under dry conditions in might expand with higher air humidity. In contrast the synthetic bushing material we‘ve chosen has got a humidity absorption of max 0,3%. This leads to a consistently high performance regardless of the weather conditions when you’re riding. In order to improve the bearing characteristics further we‘ve chosen a synthetic material with a molecularly embedded lubricant which provides superior performance with a friction coefficient of μ 0,2.In addition to humidity absorption and friction coefficient, another important consideration for bushings is the resistance to abrasive wear. The bearing material we‘ve chosen provides the best ratio of friction coefficient and resistance to abrasive wear of any material currently available. We ask you to understand that we’d like to keep the name of our new wonder material a company secret.

Adjustable travel
You‘re unique, so is your riding style. That’s why Nicolai bikes feature individually adjustable travel. Adjustable for your riding style, for your trail, and for your speed. Most riders leave the mounting position of the rear shock in the “factory position” (the way we deliver it), which offers maximum travel. However, the position with less travel can be useful under some circumstances. When the rocks are smaller, the drops rather flat and the trips longer, putting the rear shock in the lower hole and running your Helius with less travel makes sense. The lower hole results in a shorter travel by about 10mm. This change does not affect the geometry. The bike works more effectively and the rider saves power. Similar for the ION, by mounting the rear shock in the upper hole of the rocker lever the travel shrinks from 217 to 200mm. Most racers swear that they go faster! The recommended rear shock tuning will work excellently with both rear shock positions. They support both characters of the setting.
For multi-linkage rear-ends with rocker lever on the top tube the higher position results in more travel and improved downhill abilities. The lower position means less travel and firmer suspension. For multi-linkage rear-ends with a rocker lever on the down tube the lower position provides less travel and the lower position offers more travel.
Verstellbarer Federweg

Zero Stack head tube Headsets have been greatly improved and optimized for different requirements and applications in recent years. But the designation of the headset has become very confusing due to the variety of specs. Some major headset manufacturers have jointly developed a system for the naming and identification of headset dimensions. The S.H.I.S. - Standardized Headset Identification System (Complete document available under www.Bicycleheadsets.com) In order to have a clear denomination of our headset dimensions we have also made use of this system of identification. The following dimensions are required:
• the inner diameter of the head tube above• the steerer diameter at the point where the stem is fixed• the inner diameter of the head tubes below• the steerer diameter at the crown race
The head tube most commonly used in 2013 Nicolai models:ZS 44 | ZS 56 ZS: The bearings are in shells with the bearing located inside the frame which means they can’t be seen. 44: head tube inner diameter 44mm -> general term 1 1/8 „Zero Stack56: head tube inner diameter 56mm -> general term 1 1/2 „Zero Stack
Please check the NICOLAI tech sheets for further head tubes details for specific models.
Bushings or axle
For fitting the shocks we use two different mounting kits. For an overall width up to 22 mm we use aluminium bushings pressed into the shock’s bearings from both sides. For wider fittings over 25mm we only use a steel axle. If bushings were to be pressed in a wider fitting, there would be a risk that under peak loads the bushing deforms with the result that the shock mounting bolt bends or breaks. A full width steel axle is capable of carrying even the highest peak loads safely.

Trotz vollem Produktionsplan.
Production planning and lead times – behind the scenesWith the large number of Nicolai models in the range we group manufacture the same models for efficiency. On the Nicolai website at www.nicolai.net under “Service/Production Plan” you will find a link to the current production plan showing which model we are planning to manufacture in each week and how many production slots are still available. If it’s the case that the production plan shows no more free slots for the next 8 weeks then that does not always mean that you‘ll then have to wait a long time for a frame. Our licensed dealers and distributors often place pre-orders and carry stock of common frames in an unfinished condition. This means that you can often get a frame in your desired colour and configuration within a few weeks even when the production schedule is fully booked.

NICOLAI ORDER GENERATOR
Create your personal bikeOne big advantage of single-unit manufacturing when compared to bulk production is the ability to choose from a broad range of details and options for your Nicolai in order to build your completely customised dream bike. You can choose from lots of colours and finishes, as well as different rear axle standards, shocks, head tube designs, shifting options and cable guides. The pages of this catalogue show only one possible option for each frame model. In order to let you know which options are available and recommended for each Nicolai frame, we‘ve added web links to the model‘s Tech Sheet. In order to simplify the frame ordering process we‘ve created the Nicolai order generator for you: http://builder.nicolai.dbap.de. If you are in Germany then you or your licensed Nicolai dealer can easily click trough all the options that are available for a given frame and with another click send the filled in form directly to our sales staff. Outside of Germany you can still use the order generator to spec your frame and see the options available but then your dealer should place the order through the local distributor.
Welche Probleme hattest Du damit? Vielleicht Rückenschmerzen, schmerzende Knie oder ein Stechen im Nacken? Als nächstes wollen wir Deine Körpermaße und Körpermasse wissen, also Deine Größe, Deine Schrittlänge, Deine Armlänge und Dein Gewicht. Welche Sitzposition bevorzugst Du? Hast Du gesundheitliche Probleme?
How to order a custom or tailored frame?
If you order one of our tailor made frames then the communication about the technical details should always be between the Nicolai engineer in charge and the future rider. Of course you can order and buy a tailored frame at your local licensed dealer, but for all technical aspects and details regarding this order we here at Nicolai are your direct contact. So after we‘ve got in contact we will first ask you why you think that you need a custom frame at all. Usually the reasons have developed from past experiences with other frames. What bike have you been riding so far? What are the exact measurements of it? What kind of worries and problems did you have with that bike? Backache or aching knees? A stiff neck perhaps? These are the first things that we should discuss. Next we will ask you some details regarding dimensions: Your body size, inseam, arm-length and your weight. What riding position do you prefer? Do you have any specific requirements? We will then find out what you are going to use your new bike for: cross country racing, relaxed tours, challenging trails - or maybe freeriding is your thing? What forks are you intending to fit to your bike? What components do you have in mind? We often find that with analysis of the first three points we come to the conclusion that one of our regular Nicolai frames with carefully chosen components will put things right and custom geometry is not actually required. However, if we come to the conclusion that we can‘t meet your demands with a standard frame then we will work out a bespoke tailored geometry for you. Of course it is also possible that you are particularly technically skilled, a professional rider, or just know exactly what geometry or features you require. In that case we will ask you for a technical drawing containing a complete set of geometry data. We will, of course, assess your design for any issues with components that we are aware of and for technical feasibility, and advise you accordingly. However, if the frame is completely you your specification we cannot be held responsible if the final outcome does not work as well as our custom tailored frames. When we build a tailored frame for you we make a technical drawing containing all geometry details and we will send it to you for your confirmation. You will then have the opportunity to make any final changes or resolve any unanswered questions. We won‘t start building your frame until you give us the go-ahead and have confirmed your personal tailored geometry. Independently from agreeing the technical details it is best to place a formal order to set a production slot for your frame so it can be built without too much delay. Technical details and questions can still be resolved during the period between order placement and production date.
…stands for Hollow Weld Technology. Big and voluminous parts like the yokes of chainstays and seatstays or parts of the bottom bracket are normally very heavy. That’s why we manufacture them in two phases, cnc the inside and weld them together. The result is hollow parts. This process is extremely difficult and takes a great deal of time time; needless to say it’s also cost intensive. But the result justifies the hassle: the parts are very lightweight, incredibly stiff and extraordinarily durable.
HWT
In autumn 2011 our team riders Daniel Jahn and „Schneidi“ came up with the idea of building their own enduro hardtails for winter training. Schneidi’s bike was to be total low-maintenance in order to spend as much time as possible out on the trails. For Daniel it was more about the hardtail feeling, which he really liked on his 4X-bike. Both are racers, so for both riders the Argon FR was too tame. So they wondered what the ideal enduro hardtail could look like. Both went for a slacker head angle and Schneidi chose a longer top tube because “length does run”. Daniel preferred a low center of gravity instead and experimented on how low the bottom bracket can be without having a touchdown in technical terrain. The new 142x12mm thru axle dropouts help with wheel changes thanks to the axle guides and the post-mount can take a 180 disk brake without needing an adapter. When both frames were ready they realized that the combination of both bikes would be the perfect enduro hardtail. In an outstanding performance at the Megavalanche 2012, Schneidi proved that the Argon AM can even manage the toughest terrain!

SINGLEAVALANCHE
FRANk SCHNEIDER AGAINST THE WORLD
Wo wohl? Natürlich beim Megavalanche in Alpe d’Huez.
Euer Schneidi
In order to put the GATES Carbondrive system through its paces, I built myself an Argon AM single- speed using the new Gates Center Track System. The silent propulsion, freedom from maintenance and the
combination of a lightweight yet sturdy bike, was an entirely new experience for me. I was wondering where I could find a place with all the elements of snow, mud, dust and water on one single descent. Right - there is no better spot for this than the Megavalanche, Alpe d’Huez. And so my idea was born to compete in one of the longest and most challenging downhill races in the world on a Single-speed hardtail. Not only it be the ultimate test for me but also for the new Gates Center Track System. To prepare, I went for a couple of short bike rides on single-trails for about an hour every day in the Mühlhäuser forest. I included a longer leg of about 2km in a dried up riverbed on each ride in order to get a bit of an ‘Alpe d’Huez feeling’.
And then the day came: Megavalanche, Alpe d’Huez. My Argon AM was perfectly prepared. I had decided on a ratio of 1:1.92. This corresponds to a sprocket of 50 teeth at the front and 26 teeth at the back. It was just right to allow me to pedal up the climbs without having to push my bike, and peddling
fast I had enough speed going downhill as well. The Fulcrum Enduro wheels with Onza IBEX DH tyres were a puncture proof combination. Due to the lack of travel there was a high risk of getting punctures and so I couldn’t save weight on the tyres. For the suspension fork I decided on the SR Suntour Durolux with 160mm travel, which was plenty for a hardtail. A Vario seat post is, particularly for a hardtail, obligatory. I was in the fifth row to start the final and managed the snow pretty well. At the end of the glacier I counted only about 10 riders in front of me. On the rocky singletrails after Alpe d’huez I had to adjust my riding to the bike limitations. On a hardtail you can do only 80-90% of full speed and I constantly had to watch out for big rocks to avoid getting a flat tyre. On the climbs I noticed another advantage. Thanks to the big gear I had chosen and despite a slow pedal frequency, I was faster than other riders who were pedaling away in low gear up the hills. At the halfway point in the race I was in second position. On the lower part of the track I tried to save as much energy as possible. To do this I sometimes chose the craziest lines and constantly pushed my Argon AM to the limit. Playing with the track was just awesome and distracted me from the pain in my body. I held my position right to the finish line and won the masters class in the Challenger Race in the Megavalanche. I was the only one among 400 fully suspended riders on a Singlespeed Hardtail. Today I’ve forgotten all the pain of the race and only remember the good moments of the final descent. I’m already considering starting on a Singlespeed Hardtail once again!
Yours, Schneidi
Gates Carbon Drive
Wann wirfst Du Deine Kette weg?
Gates Carbon Drive
The Gates Carbon Drive is no longer a novelty. Working with our Partner company Universal Transmissions, the US manufacturer Gates has made this carbon fibre reinforced belt drive a real alternative for bikes as it can be used with all common rear hub standards. Many manufacturers are now offering models with the Carbon Drive system but the first bikes on the road came from our factory. We’ve maintained this lead in development and offer a perfect adaptation of Gates CD for all Nicolai hardtails. What are the particular advantages of the Gates Carbon Drive? Firstly, with the Carbon Drive you will never have to oil your chain as the system is dry running. No more corrosion, no more rattling or squeaking, no more greasy, dirty fingers when mounting the wheel. The carbon drive leaves all the old annoyances of chains behind and at the same time it provides a longer life time than a unmaintained chain. With a weight of only 80 g it brings a significant reduction in weight. The Carbon Drive is made of high-tensile carbon fibres embedded in a resistant polyurethane synthetic cover that enables a completely new riding experience. With the Carbon Drive the rider’s energy is transferred directly into forward motion with no “rubber band” sensation. So, when are you going to make the switch?
ARGON AM Pinion - Mein Eindruck
Euer Steffen Paul
My Pinion opinion
The weather at the end of November is perfect for snuggling up to the warming stove: Cold, unrelenting rain followed by snow. However, I soon warmed up when I got the opportunity to test ride the new Argon AM Pinion. Set up for the autumnal conditions: 2.4“ Onza IBEX DH tires, 160mm Rock Shox Lyrik RC2L and a 780 mm wide DH handlebar there was no question of the Argon AM Pinion losing control. After a brief familiarization with the twist shifter I really felt at ease with the ergonomics. The gear changing was rapid and accurate. Shifting is even smoother when you ease back off the Gates Carbondrive belt. This is also intuitive after a short time and it‘s fun to shift through the fine gradation of the transmission. The compact gearing with 18 speed offers a total gear ratio of 636%! Any questions? On the trail, the Argon AM Pinion shows its worth under the most miserable weather conditions. The drivetrain performs silently and unobtrusively, totally unphased by the mud. The GATES carbondrive brushes aside every attack from dirt and mud without complaint, nothing gets stuck, just amazing! I like how easily and safely I can pull a wheelie with the Argon AM. The wheels have enough traction and ensure great stability. With an active riding style on the downhills I can just open the throttle like on a full suspension bike. The high ground clearance provides ample safety when riding over obstacles. My conclusion: The Argon AM Pinion is made for the harshest weather conditions and is the basis for a „hassle-free allround bike.“

3. Und Weißabgleich heißt auf Englisch „White Balance“. Wie passend...

MARCO HöSELALL MOUNTAIN TRIALdigital < > analog
October usually brings some beautifully colorful days with pleasant temperatures on the trails at the end of the bike season. We’ve always loved making our videos in these conditions over the past
few years. After three successful „AMT“ - (All Mountain Trial) video projects, we were fully aware of the Nicolai fans waiting for a worthy addition and we must not let them down. In the 2012 season I’ve been riding the „Argon FR“ with Gates Carbon Drive a lot. I quickly realized that the combination of hardtail frame and the GATES Carbondrive has huge potential to go big on all-mountain tours.
After a while searching for new locations we figured out that the Zittau Mountains might be a good choice, offereing great diversity. A combination of huge sandstone cliffs and a dense trail network in the forest provided the perfect conditions for technically tricky All Mountain Trial Action. To avoid unpleasant surprises by poor weather conditions, we decided to plan our trip less than a week in advance. For our targeted shooting days we saw very cold weather with temperatures around freezing point rolling in. But at least no significant rainfall. What we hadn‘t considered was the precipitation that had come down on the Zittau mountains a few days earlier. Accompanied by a polar air mass, the rain had turned to snow and hadn‘t melted.
Nevertheless we set and soon found ourselves in 15 - 20cm deep snow at minus two degrees surrounded in dense fog. Our tour guide and the MTB Locals advised us to cancel our project but we had no other choice but to
see it through. For me personally, the situation was not entirely unknown, as I used to spend hours on snow and ice during my preparations for the World Cup trial season. With a lot of motivation and an avalanche shovel in my backpack we went on the trails. But before going to the big jumps, it was shoveling time!
The initial paths and rocky trails showed that the technically tricky passages had some kind of grip despite the snow. Thus good riding action on the rocks seemed possible. At the starting point on the mountain, we discovered a 3 meter wide rock gap. This seemed to be somewhat doable in spite of the extremely short and narrow run in. Take off and landing zone were slightly covered with snow, but I managed to jump over this gap. This entry into the trail was the action of the day and now everything seemed possible. We continued the tour, meter by meter, we shoveled our lines and cleared them all by bike. We noticed that snow is a strange medium ‚under tyre‘. It’s of course primarily slippery, but in some situations snow can provide grip and particularly mitigates hard landings from big heights. Balancing on the fallen tree was a kind of a lottery game. You never knew at what point grip was available and where the bark turned to a soapy slippery surface.
Our two-day tour was marked by many climbs to explore and numerous shovelling sessions to make the trail visible and ridable. But in the end we were able to bring together a successful cohesive tour filled with stacks of technically tricky lines and sections.
After two days of shooting and fairly wet shoes, we have also learned a lesson: Snow in the woods is brighter than expected. If you drop in the snow you land deeper than you think. And white balance has nothing to do with mountainbiking in snow.

Was steckt hinter dem Erfolg?
Outwardly the WURZELPASSAGE is an inconspicuous shop. The store is not located in an A1 shopping street in the city center, but it’s very conveniently accesible from the highway
A5 which is a major north-south route in southern Germany. In the shop window you’ll see some customer bikes or the bike from the shop owner Rainer Schönfeld. What you won’t find is the all too typical line up of bargain bikes of all ranges. And yet WURZELPASSAGE is one of the most successful and most competent NICOLAI premium shops in Germany. What‘s behind the success? One thing is for sure: Nothing you would read about in the marketing school books.
So steht’s aber nicht im
Lehrbuch
NICOLAI PREMIUM SHOP WURZELPASSAGE
That’s definitely not in the
school book
NICOLAI Bikes sind Custom-made Produkte.

School book opinion No.1: „What you don’t have in your shop you can’t sell“ is not really applicable for a NICOLAI PremiumShop like WURZELPASSAGE. NICOLAI bikes are custom-made products. Starting with the frame geometry up to anodised spoke nipples every detail on the bike is configured to the customer. The WURZELPASSAGE crew, Rainer Schönfeld and Claus Papendorf don‘t consider NICOLAI Bikes as simply a commodity. For them, every NICOLAI bike is a project; the aim of which is the dream bike. They accompany their customers with patience and care every step of the way through the project‘s life-cycle. Consequently NICOLAI frames and parts are always ordered for the customers not simply taken off the shop‘s shelf.
School book opinion No.2 „The shop window is your business card“. Sorry but this is limited. NICOLAI riders don‘t window shop, they‘d rather test the bikes extensively in the field; that’s why Rainer has his own test fleet. As a founding member of the Heidelberg HD Freeride e.V. association he has access to a large pool of customers and owners of individually built NICOLAI bikes. They regularly meet to go for a
Rainer Schönfeld is a trained precision mechanic. He uses a self-designed laser level to align the Cane Creek Angle-Sets. He has a desk drill press and a lathe in his workshop. This allows him to produce precision parts such as shock bushings by himself. The barbecue session at the front door is really a common practice in the lunch break, even in winter!
ride on their officially approved and constantly maintained bike track in the “Königstuhl”, their local mountain in the city of Heidelberg. Here you can hook up with like-minded people and talk real shop.
School book opinion No.3 „location location location“ ... disproved. You don’t find NICOLAI Bikes in every local bike shop, which is major plus point for many potential customers. A special product waits to be discovered. And sometimes you’ll have to turn away from the main traffic flow („mainstream“) and make a pilgrimage to the „guru“ (Rainer’s nickname in the mountainbike Internet forums). Rainer is a well known and respected entity in the most visited German speaking mountain bike technology forum. He is a walking NICOLAI encyclopedia and answers questions usually faster than the company‘s own employees.
And yet, one school book opinion would perhaps be true. „Don’t make youself comparable.“ The WURZELPASSAGE, whose nickname is associated with a “House of Pleasure” turns money to real love. Where else would you find such passion for bikes?

GATES NICOLAI team David „G-Räf“ Graf DER SPITZENSPORT

Elite sport
You have to invest a lot of power to continuously climb up the performance ladder in professional sports. I would like to give you a glimpse of
what’s behind the hard sprints and fast legs needed for BMX and MTB 4X.
My stint varies depending on the training phase; during the competition period you’ll have to count in some recovery time between races.
The construction phase is accompanied by very intense weight and endurance training. The BMX track training gets a little bit neglected. Nevertheless, I go at least twice a week on the BMX track to focus on start-gate training and sharpen my riding skills. There are also three or four weight training sessions per week, including two leg training sessions, one or two upper body workouts and the core work. The duration of the sessions differs, warm up with a full leg workout can take three hours. The most important exercise is the squat. Sometimes I take my legs to the limit; afterwards I can hardly walk the stairs from the gym to the wardrobe. Overall, I train six days a week with two sessions per day, the equivalent of 13 to 15 hours a week.
The closer the first race date gets, the more I focus on my muscles I‘ve built up in the construction phase. The next step is to trim them to speed and explosiveness. The training volume drops as recovery becomes increasingly important. I also spend more time on the bike. To train the leg muscles to make them quick for sprints I do so called plyometric training sessions. The plyos are diverse and include jumping exercises such as hurdle jumping or jumping from standing to a certain height. The muscles must be able to reach 100% output in a super short time. The entire training is specific to BMX sports. The endurance work for instance no longer done on the spinning bikes but on the BMX track by racing full laps. Additionally I go to test races to prepare mentally and to see where I stand with my training results.
My goals for next year are the BMX World Championships in New Zealand and the MTB World Cup in South Africa. My entire training plan is geared towards ensuring I am in peak condition for these high profile events.
My training has changed over the past years since turning pro. I train with greater awareness and torture myself voluntarily because I‘ve stood the podium, I‘ve tasted success and I can‘t get enough of it!

Kai Gimmler is a suspension specialist and a service point for many big brands.
Each NICOLAI is unique. Every bike is documentated in the shop’s own photo studio.
The suspension and sag tester is a simple but very useful invention.
A quick check before handing over „the project” to Markus Stemper (l). Kai Gimmler checking the gears. This special brake lever activates both the front and the rear brake.
If you’re able to dream, you’ll be capable of getting things done
The dream is not necessarily always positive. A dream may be something unattainable, something removed from reality. But it can
also be a constant incentive to ourselves to overcome limits, to transform undoable into doable.
It was a dream that brought Markus Stemper, owner of a unique ARGON Pinion Road and Kai Gimmler, NICOLAI Premium Shop start up, together.
Markus Stemper, a hotel owner from Trier, had a bad motorcycle accident in 1999 leaving his left arm permanently damaged. A severed nerve in the shoulder caused a so-called “drop arm” which allows him only slight movements with the fingers but his arm muscles remain completely paralysed. Any notion of hobbies, including cycling, were pushed aside by trying to cope with the daily struggle, personally and professionally.
12 years later
Kai Gimmler, an avid downhiller who had been through several apprenticeships, academic education programmes and down a number of career paths finally took the decision to open a bike shop. To achieve what he had always set his heart on, he successfully completed his Business Administration
degree and his Master degree in bicycle mechanics and opened the doors of his own shop – carrying his name - in April 2011.
About the same time
Markus Stemper came to terms with his physical impairment and now thrives on both his work and also his freetime. He developed an unprecedented sporting ambition, something completely unknown to him before his accident. The desire to buy a tailor-made bike that was designed for his specific needs led him to Kai Gimmler bikes in Siersburg.
November 2012, after a long planning phase and an even longer production time
Kai Gimmler hands over a customized NICOLAI Argon Road Pinion to Markus Stemper. It’s the first road bike with an 18 speed Pinion gearbox from NICOLAI. Two dreams came together in one reality. Kai Gimmler has turned his passion for cycling into a vocation. He‘s become a NICOLAI Premium Dealer with heart and soul. Markus Stemper has just given word of another project; he‘s going into two years of intensive training with his dream bike in preparation for an Iron Man. Without dreaming your achievements won‘t be able to fly.

There’s no wonder that one of our ARGON TRs found its new home in Leipzig. From Johan Sebastian Bach, to the birth of the printed word
through to the revolutionaries revolting against German separation, Leipzig is steeped in history and today oozes the spirit and charm one would expect from one of the world’s cultural capitals. The precious beauty of a custom made Argon TR compliments the environment and so it’s no wonder the Argon TR fitted right in. A tour through Leipzig is a trip through various European cultural epochs, if you only have the eye for it. Matthias Vogt, a Leipzig architect has such an eye, and therefore he prefers to use the bike for commuting. The rich cultural heritage of the daily ride through the city provides a sight-seeing trip, part of which is the Argon TR itself.

Euer Vinc
The entire Nicolai team and I are on our way to Zurich to spend time together with our Swiss distributor “rasant bikes“. It will be an awesome weekend with bikes, BBQ, beer and
riding on the premises of our textile sponsor ZIMTSTERN. I hadn’t had much time for riding recently, but was persuaded by “rasant”-Gery, the Swiss bundle of energy, to go for a ride with him. There is no question of me competing with him in terms of fitness. Straight away I’m put on the new ION 16 E-Boxx and off we go to the nearby Uetliberg. After a couple of meters I have to admit to myself that my fitness level is even worse than I had thought. I switch on the engine and woooooooooooosh – I’m neck-to-neck with Geri. Sure, it’s still exhausting and my pulse rate wouldn’t go below 200…After a couple of kilometers going uphill Geri, too, is getting slower. I turn on the controller for full support and hauled Geri in. Thanks to the torque of the Bosch engine we are speeding up the Uetliberg doing 18km/h and have probably set a new uphill record. At the top I can’t stop smiling. But I didn’t know that I would be beaming even more after the downhill. The position off the battery is central and low in the frame, so the additional weight is hardly noticeable and the bike is still super easy to maneuver. The suspension works superbly on all surfaces, in line with the ION style. In conclusion I can say: Although Nicolai e-bikes with the Bosch drive might not appeal to everyone, they allow even averagely skilled riders to ride long trails and alpine tracks without being too exhausted and giving up after an hour.
Yours, Vinc
watch!

EN Under the sloping roof of the QLF office you have to duck down to get to the front window facing the courtyard. The roof pitch ends at a wall height of about 1,30m. Over the years we‘ve got used to this compulsion. To get a good view of the outside sometimes you have to arch your back. Our ideas are a result of frequent changes of perspective, in which we reconsider ourselves in different proportions to the outside world. And even the painful contact with the low-hanging ceiling has led to some useful brain impulses. We can‘t imagine having a typical flat ceiling over our heads. Nicolai is atypical.
