ISO 55000 is the first worldwide a3empt to capture the generically applicable ‘must do’ items for the management of any asset type….. the new standards will also provides significant opportuniBes to re-‐examine and refine asset owner and service provider relaBonships, governance and regulatory frameworks and insurance, customer relaBons and other stakeholder confidence.
Where might ISO 55000 come in?

Is it worth the effort? An overall metric
Late 1990’s, Kenneco\ Copper reported a 10% overall improvement on maintenance efficiency following improvements in that made their technical documenta0on more accessible to technicians.

A recent study at an oil & gas company (also) reported an overall 10% produc0vity gain for maintenance users associated with as a solu0on to be\er manage new and legacy engineering data, providing a single access point for 98% of their engineering data.

Line-‐of-‐sight concept
Line-‐of-‐sight is an important concept because, in my humble opinion, if all that comes out of these
(ISO 55000) standards is the increase/improvement of ‘line of sight’ for (NonHuman/
Non-‐Financial) assets asset management, it will be a resounding success!!!

Factors that complicate use of technical content for asset maintenance
Perspec0ve • Different informa0on creators prepare their documenta0on according to their internal drivers.
• Plant maintainers must understand and navigate documenta0on organized from
Context • OEMs oken document all configura0ons for a single model in one book.
• Any single item of equipment has only one configura0on. Maintainers must recognise relevant informa0on.
Changes • Changes to technical documenta0on are a fact of life.
• Differing documenta0on lifecycles complicate how informa0on needs to be extracted for use..

Is it worth the effort? Voices from the coal face
“The technical library is simple for site staff to use regardless of someone’s level of computer skill. It is very easy for people to find informa3on about a machine, because the informa0on is linked to the machine – it provides a flexible, one-‐stop shop for technical resources”. A.Irvine, Reliability Engineer, Anglo American Metallurgical Coal.

Is it worth the effort? Voices from the coal face
“‘Professional technical content management’ is not sexy but I have seen a lot of money spent on project ini0a0ves that focus only on the immediate… 12mths aRer everyone has pa\ed themselves on the back for a job well done, the project ini3a3ve falls over…. Finishing all these loose ends can take as long as getng sexy parts of the project but they are important to the long term viability of these projects.” G.Conway, Electrical Engineer, Anglo American Metallurgical Coal.

OEMs & manufacturers are typically the authorita0ve informa0on source for their equipment and the informa0on is diverse and rela0vely dynamic.
