2014 Honor Roll of Donors

Given the competing demands on everyone’s time and

resources these days, the loyalty and generosity of our

donors and volunteers are to be exceedingly admired. In

this annual honor roll, we officially thank and recognize

those who have graciously exhibited both over the past

fiscal year.

In truth, we can’t thank you enough for contributing to the

success of our efforts. Your support creates opportunities

through direct financial assistance to our students,

enhancements to academic and co-curricular

programming, and advancements in the learning

environment. I see the products of your philanthropy every

day – grateful scholarship recipients, first-year students

discovering their leadership potential through our

innovative Learning to Lead course, and the construction

of a new academic building equipped to promote a

progressive and collaborative education. The list is long,

and the impact is immeasurable.

So, we once again thank you for your loyalty and generosity

to Nichols College. As we realize our vision of being a

college of choice for business and leadership education,

we intend to prove worthy of your continued investment

and confidence.

Dear Nichols College Community,

We have been honored to serve as chairs of the President’s

Society and would like to take this opportunity to thank all

donors for their support of Nichols College throughout the

year. A gift of any amount is a gesture of generosity and

makes a difference in the lives of Nichols students.

Here are a few fundraising achievements for fiscal year

2014 (July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014):

• Your donations to Nichols totaled $3.5 million in

restricted and unrestricted gifts.

• For the first time, President’s Society membership

exceeded 200 donors – 224 of you made gifts of $1,000 or

more to Nichols.

• The first-ever Bison Blitz campaign was a resounding

success, raising over $100,000, which was generously

matched by John H. McClutchy, Jr. ’72, chairman of the

Board of Trustees.

• Three new endowed scholarships were established,

bringing the total to 27.

• The number of first-time alumni donors more than

doubled.

Your generous support and dedication help Nichols

students gain the confidence and skills to succeed. We

greatly appreciate your continued commitment to the

College and the students it serves.

For Tom Hall ’69, seeing the joyand excitement on the faces ofNichols College graduates eachMay is enough – but not hisonly – motivation for givingback to his alma mater.“Having the opportunity to getto know some of the studentsduring the four years they are atNichols is very satisfying,” hesays. “I even keep in touch witha few of them.”Hall relates the experience to

his own, as a newly mintedgraduate who landed a job atAT&T. Competing withgraduates from Ivy Leagueschools, he was selected from apool of 12 applicants toparticipate in a specialmanagement program. “I thinkit had a lot to do with what Iexperienced and learned atNichols,” Hall says. “I realizedthat success in the businessworld is dependent more on thevalue of your education, not thecost.” Today, he is managingdirector-investments at WellsFargo Advisors LLC.As vice chair of the Nichols

College Board of Trustees, Halllends his professional insightsand devotes his time, talent andtreasure to ensure that Nicholscontinues to offer students thekeys to business success. “Ourstudents are fully prepared to

enter the workforce, if they arewilling to put in the effort,” Hallexplains, citing the traits thatdistinguish Nichols graduates,such as excellent interpersonalskills and the versatility tocommunicate with all differenttypes of people. He seeschallenges as well asopportunities on the horizonfor the College. “As the relativeeducation dollars shrink, weneed to stay competitive. Weneed to be able to attract top-notch students,” he says. I would not have beenable to attend Nichols if not forthe help of others. This is justpart of my way of giving back.”The Halls also give of

themselves in the community.Having developed a passion forthe plight of the homeless,Denise has served as chair ofMercy Housing and ShelterCorporation, a sponsoredministry of the Sisters of Mercy,and Tom is involved with theHouse of Bread, run by theSisters of St. Joseph in Hartford.In addition to Nichols, they alsoteam up on their volunteerefforts honoring veterans byplacing over 3,000 flags on thegraves of West Hartfordcemeteries on Veterans andMemorial Day weekends. Thetradition, which began over 30years ago with Denise’s father,continues today under theleadership of Tom and Deniseand with the help of 250volunteers.And it’s their passion and

hopes for Nichols that keepthem invested in its brightfuture. “It has been a privilegeand honor to be a trustee,” saysHall. “We are fortunate to havea visionary president, a talentedprofessional staff, and trulydedicated professors. I lookforward to Nichols’ long-termsuccess.”
