because they do not work well enough or long enough to justify the time and money that patients spend on those things.

• Trichloracetic acid (TCA) peels because the results are too variable, and the risks of scarring and other problems from those

peels can be significant.• CO2 or erbium laser resurfacing because the risks and downtime

are unacceptable to my patients.• “Thread lifts” (Aptos threads, Contour threads, etc) because the

risks, downtime and short duration of benefit are unacceptable to my patients.

• I do not sell a “line” of cosmetics to my patients because there is no one “line” of cosmetics which is uniformly superior to the others, and suitable for all patients. The truth is that just about all

cosmetic lines these days are technically very good and unlikely to cause problems for most people. So you can choose whatever pleases you, and choose products from several different vendors if you like.

What is that Spot? Age Spots? Sun Spots? Skin Cancer?

As time goes on we start to notice brown spots and freckles -- “souvenirs of Florida” -- on the backs of our hands and other sun

exposed areas like the upper chest and face.At first, these brown spots are small and light coloured, but

eventually they become a cosmetic problem -- an obvious sign of premature aging of the skin because of ultraviolet damage from sun exposure or from tanning beds.

It is not too late for those of us who already have sun spots and age spots. One or two treatments with the new state-of-the-art Candela ATV laser can fade or eliminate brown “age spots” on the face, chest and hands within a few weeks. Cutera LimeLight can be used in cases where there is a background of tiny freckles and brown discolouration

– sometimes erasing 20 years of irregular pigment with two or three safe, simple treatments! In cases where there are also fine lines, wrinkles or uneven skin texture the Cutera Pearl Fractional laser can be used to refresh and renew your skin from the inside out. As time goes on, many people develop redness, “broken veins” and brown spots on the face. This problem is speeded up by smoking,

sun exposure, and also by medical conditions like rosacea.Fortunately, medical science has come to the rescue, and now it is

possible to repair the redness, “broken veins” and brown spots. After Dr. Smith has had the opportunity to examine your skin and to learn what kind of sun exposure you have accumulated, he can advise you about the use of lasers and light sources to repair your skin, and give you advice and if necessary a prescription for medications which you can use to keep your skin in good condition after it has been treated.

Often, Dr. Smith will treat your face (and sometimes your neck and chest) with LimeLight intense pulsed light to reduce redness and brown spots and discoloration, then in the same treatment session add CoolGlide Vascular laser and/or Candela ATV laser for brown spots. Each treatment session for either the face or the neck or chest (even when multiple devices are used) usually costs $250-$350, depending on how extensive and complicated the treatment is. Most patients enjoy visible improvement after their first treatment, but in severe cases may want or need 2-3 treatment sessions to reach maximum improvement. The care of patients with rosacea and/or sun damage is an important part of Dr. Smith’s practice. Dr. Smith and his staff have performed over 2,250 Intense Pulsed Light treatments, and over 3,500 vascular laser treatments.

You will usually be somewhat pink immediately after being treated, and your brown spots may become somewhat darker after treatment before they fade over the next couple of weeks. Broken veins on the face tend to improve very rapidly, diminishing over several days after treatment. Bruising and swelling are very seldom a problem. Most patients return to work the same day or the day after treatment. You can apply makeup as soon as your treatment is finished, before you leave the office, if you wish.

Improve The Tone, Texture And Colour Of The Skin.In some cases where a person has a lot of sun damage (often from farming, golfing or boating) Dr. Smith may suggest treatment with the Cutera Pearl Fractional laser to improve the tone, texture and color of the skin.

Annoying Growths or Skin Tags“It is easy to get rid of annoying unsightly moles, skin tags and broken blood vessels.”

As we go through life, all of us gradually acquire benign but annoying growths on our skin.

The most common of these are skin tags, moles, seborrheic keratoses, and cherry hemangiomas.

Skin tags are flesh coloured or brown growths ranging in size from about 1 mm to 1 cm, most commonly hanging from the neck, underarms and groin. Dr. Smith can safely and easily remove your skin tags. No stitches are required, and in about a week or so it will be hard for anyone to see where the skin tags were.

The cost of skin tag removal starts at $80, and depends on the size, location and number of skin tags you’d like removed.

Cherry Hemangiomas are pink or red bumps, usually ranging in size from 1 mm to about 5 mm. They are called “cherries” because they are about the colour of a cherry. They are actually little collections of blood vessels under the surface of the skin, and are found most commonly on the trunk, but can develop on any part of the body. Most people have at least a few cherry hemangiomas, but some people develop hundreds of them. This can be unsightly and embarrassing. Cherry hemangiomas can be easily and safely treated using the Cutera CoolGlide 1064 nm vascular laser. Within a couple of weeks the cherry hemangiomas are gone or greatly reduced. The cost for laser treatment of cherry hemangiomas starts at $125, depending on the number and location of the cherries you’d like to get rid of.

Seborrheic keratoses (often referred to by dermatologists as “SKs”) are flesh coloured to brown or black, range in size from several mm to several cm, and often have a dry crumbly appearance, kind of like a piece of stuck on bubble gum or mud.

Some people start to develop SKs when they are 30-40 years old, usually on the face and trunk, sometimes under the breasts. As time goes on, the SKs increase in size and number. SKs can be unpleasant to touch, embarrassing, unsightly and occasionally get irritated. Dr. Smith can remove your SKs without the need for stitches. The treated area heals up in a week or two. Dr. Smith does NOT use liquid nitrogen to remove SKs, because liquid nitrogen is too unreliable and uncomfortable. The cost to remove SKs starts at $80, depending on the number, size and location of the SKs you’d like to be rid of.

Moles are benign flesh coloured or brown bumps, usually ranging in size from 1 mm to 1 cm, often on the face and neck, and less commonly on other parts of the body. Moles grow slowly, and can increase in number as you go through life. People who get a lot of sun exposure, in particular during childhood, tend to get more moles.

Removal of benign moles can usually be done without the need for stitches, and the treated area heals up within a week or two. The cost of mole removal starts at $80, depends on the size, number and location of the moles you’d like removed. Dr. Smith has performed over 4,200 treatment sessions for the removal of benign growths from all parts of the face and body!

Rarely, moles can turn into skin cancer, and very rarely there are skin cancers that can look like SKs, skin tags or cherry hemangiomas. Dr. Smith is a specialist in Dermatology, and is always careful to examine each mole or other growth for signs suggestive of cancer before deciding what advice and treatment to offer you.

method for removal of unwanted blood vessels from all parts of the body. With only one or two treatment sessions in most cases, using the gentle power of the laser, you can greatly improve the appearance of facial skin which has been disfigured by unwanted blood vessels and “broken capillaries”, for example because of sun damage or rosacea. Dr. Smith has been watching the evolution of resurfacing technology for many years. Early technologies like Erbium-YAG and CO2 Laser

either promised more than they delivered, or had risks and downtime that were unacceptable to Dr. Smith and his patients. Early fractional lasers (for example the Fraxel and the Sciton ProFractional) required up to six treatment sessions, caused considerable discomfort, and did not produce enough benefit to satisfy the needs of most patients.
