The Indus River Valley: Geography

The Indus River Valley is located in the Indian Subcontinent.

• The river carries silt while the monsoons or seasonal winds bring rain. • From October to May, India experiences dry winter winds from the desert.

• From June to September, India experiences wet summer winds from the Sea.

These two climate features can make the planting seasons unpredictable.

The Indus River Valley: CitiesThe first cities were constructed around 2500 B.C.

• The largest cities in the Indus River Valley are Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa.

• What makes these cities different were that it was planned in a precise grid system.

• The inhabitants of this river valley even created an underground sewer system for their bathrooms.

• This is something that would not be done to this specification for another 4000 years!

The Indus River Valley: Culture

Harappa had a language made up of 400 symbols that we are not able to decipher or decode.

Scientists believe they worshiped animals.

Archeologists have proven that they were traders for artifacts have been found as far as the Fertile Crescent.

The Indus River Valley: Decline

• Archeologists are not sure specifically what caused the Indus River Valley to decline around 1750 B.C.

• The three events that maybe the factors of decline are tectonic plates, their resources dried out, and invasions.

• The Indian subcontinent has a lot of earthquake activity, which may have caused the city to crumble as well as caused the river to change course and/or flood destroying society. There is also evidence of different people conquering the region.
