Where are we today• 85 T Operations user program
– World Leading and Unique User Environment– Currently executing our second call of proposals
• Set World Record for non-destructive high field (89 Tesla)• Have the Worlds largest (electrical) Pulsed Power System
– 1.4 GVA Has Enabled the Only Reliable Fields > 80T• +600 MJ pulse capacity • use 140 MJ for the 85 T magnet outsert
• Have established a world leading competency in Fermi Surface Topology using all NHMFL magnets (especially the 85 T)
Where are we going?
• 100 T • (Operational System Verification)
• Acceptable risk field for user operations– Based on analysis of mechanics at peak field.
(Primarily determined by outsert) • 100 T user operations
How?
• By reducing bore from 15 to 10 mm – Insert delivers 61.3 T by itself– Outsert delivers (37.0 – 3.3) T = 33.7 T
• Same risk to outsert as current 85 T operations
• To reach 100 T outsert must deliver 5 T more• Assess risk of 42 T outsert field
When? (Major Milestones)• 10 mm Insert Cad Design (Done Aug 2011)• 42T outsert Eng. Risk Assessment Nov 30th 2010• 10 mm insert completed by Jan 30th 2011• Test to 95 T or higher (Mar – Apr 2011) • 100 T user operations analysis (June 2011)• Upgrade for 100 T user ops … (2012 – 2014)
– Upgraded outsert and spares (coils 1-4 of the outsert)
