ITINERARY

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 9

Make your way to Melbourne and check in to our hotel from 2pm. This afternoon Dr Matthew Laing gives two detailed lectures, one on the history and culture of modern America and a second on the NGV exhibition. The NGV is the sole international venue for the exhibition, which features about 150 works, from the masters of classical European modernism such as Cézanne, Picasso, Dalí and Mondrian through to the birth of a distinctly American style in the art of Hopper, Koons, Pollock and Rothko. This evening we gather at one of Melbourne’s fine restaurants, for a celebratory meal. (D)

MONDAY SEPTEMBER 10

We spend the morning at the National Gallery of Victoria, exploring the MoMA exhibition, and with time to visit the other exhibitions at the NGV. This afternoon we travel the short distance by coach to the Lyon Housemuseum, which was designed by Corbett Lyon as a highly innovative way of integrating a private residence and an art gallery. The house remains the residence of the Lyon family and their collection is one of the finest of contemporary art in Australia. We return by coach to our hotel in the late afternoon. (B)

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 11

We spend today exploring the Mornington Peninsula, from its colonial history, through to its rebirth as a retreat from Melbourne, its natural beauty, gastronomy and role in the development of Australian art. Our first stop is McClelland Sculpture Park, where we enjoy contemporary art in beautiful natural surroundings. After our visit there is a break for morning tea, followed by a visit to Mulberry Hill, the estate of Daryl and Joan Lindsay, author of Picnic at Hanging Rock. The estate is cared for by the National Trust, of whose Victoria branch Daryl was President after his stint as Director of the NGV. We continue along the peninsula, stopping for lunch at a superior restaurant, and then visit Sorrento, the first European settlement in Victoria. In addition to Sorrento’s colonial history, it also has excellent views across Port Phillip Bay, which have been immortalised by Australian painters from Streeton to Boyd and beyond. In the later afternoon, we return to Melbourne. (B, L)

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 12

This morning we visit Heide Museum of Modern Art, one of Australia’s pre-eminent collections. The collection and museum is primarily the result of the efforts of John and Sunday Reed, who established a gallery of modern art alongside their house in the 1960s. The collection has developed considerably since it was acquired by the state in the 1980s, and its three buildings are set in beautiful gardens developed by Sunday, with artist gardens by Fiona Hall and Lauren Berkowitz. Just after midday, we return to our hotel, where the tour concludes. (B)
