Recently, psychologists Derek Rucker and AdamGalinsky reported that manipulating people's feelings ofstatus either at work or in social life in various wayschanges the amount that people will pay for products. The researchers told individuals to write about a timethey felt either powerful or powerless and then askedthem how much they would be willing to pay for differentproducts. Subjects who had written about feelingpowerless offered to pay more for luxury products suchas a stylish pen or fur coat, yet the desire for a quick fixfor feelings of low status may put those who regularlyfeel as if they lack influence at greater risk of havingenormous debt – or at least of making somequestionable investments. Aside from lightening ourwallets, feelings of inferiority can also lead us to gainweight. Marketing professor David Dubois states thatwhen people feel unimportant, they are more likely toopt for an extra large coffee or pizza. Consumers makethis choice because they want to consume more whenthey are feeling low. Accordingly, the researchersconclude that big things may signal higher status, andthus powerless people buy more food if it comes inphysically larger packages.

The research conducted by Rucker and Galinskyrevealed that ----.

those with feelings of low status were not satisfied withtheir investments

those who felt powerful gave a high amount of moneyfor luxury products

manipulating people's feelings of status led them topay reasonable amounts of money for certain products

there is a connection between the feelings of lowstatus and the tendency to pay more

having felt either powerful or powerless, subjects wereequally extravagant

In Indonesia, the rainforests are being destroyed due tothe expansion of the palm oil industry. Today, palm oil isgrown on an ever more huge scale, providing globalcommodity markets with vast quantities of cheapvegetable fat. Across the Indonesian islands of Sumatraand Borneo, palm oil plantations have so damaged therainforest that experts expect the extinction of theorang-utan in the wild by about 2020, if nothing is done.More than 90 percent of the orang-utan’s original habitatis gone, and the remainder is under serious pressure, with the palm oil industry being backed by theIndonesian government even in protected areas wherethe last orang-utans live, for example, in southwestBorneo. The forests on these islands are also the homeof countless other unique and rare species. Loggingoperations and plantation activities can increase the riskof serious fires, especially when coupled with unusuallydry conditions. A very large fire may lead to furtherforest loss and increase pressure on neighbouring virginforests by improving access to formerly remote areas. They also cause major public health problems acrossIndonesia and Malaysia, as the haze of smoke driftsacross urbanized areas.

According to the passage, ----.

low costs of palm oil production has increased the sizeof the industry, but risking the rainforests

Critics have long argued that Japan's scientific researchwhaling was, in fact, commercial hunting. In March,2014, the United Nation's International Court of Justiceagreed, ordering Japan to stop its hunt off Antarctica. However, the ruling may be only a temporary setbackfor Japan. The International Whaling Commissionimposed a ban on commercial whaling in 1986, but itallowed the killing of some whales for scientificresearch. Since then, Japanese whalers have caught10,710 Antarctic Minke whales in the Southern Oceanaround Antarctica, where whales are encouraged tobreed. Japan claimed the kills were necessary to studyrecovering populations, but the court said they wereexcessive. Nevertheless, Japan is likely to continue thispractice. Japanese officials say they plan to redesigntheir research program to align with the commission'srules. "I would bet that whaling will continue as usual, although with some trivial window dressing to make itlook like they are complying with the ruling," says whaleresearcher Phillip Clapham. If Japan, the only nationusing the inconsistency in the regulations, submits anacceptable proposal to the commission, the countrycould resume the practice as soon as possible.

A vegetarian is a person who eats no flesh. There aresubcategories, such as lacto-vegetarians andova-vegetarians, who eat no flesh but who eat some ofthe products of animals – in these cases, milk and eggsrespectively. A vegan, on the other hand, not onlyrefuses flesh, but also abstains from eating andsometimes wearing all animal products. Vegans arguethat animal products cannot be separated from animalmistreatment. They point, for instance, to theconnections between eating eggs and the keeping ofhens in battery cages, and between drinking milk andthe breeding and slaughter of veal calves, which arenecessary to keep dairy cows in milk. For the samereason, many vegans also refuse to wear or useproducts based on animal material such as soap, wooland leather. They make the point that it would beconsidered by a vegetarian unsuitable to beentertained on a leather seat. Other variations arevegetarians who will eat free-range eggs but refuse milk, and others who will eat fish but refuse the flesh of otheranimals. In spite of problems of definition, there havebeen several attempts to calculate the extent ofvegetarianism in a number of countries, but the dataavailable for countries such as the United Kingdom andthe United States are few.

According to the information at the end of thepassage, which of the following questions caneasily be answered?

What do we mean by vegetarianism in broad terms?

Why do people become vegetarian?

Why is it difficult to calculate the extent ofvegetarianism?

Is there an increase in the number of vegetariansacross the world?

Murat: Why is it easier to speak using gestures?

Taylan: Well, speaking without gesturing requires more

thought.

Murat: ----

Taylan: Exactly. For instance, pointing to keys on the table

and saying “The keys are there.” is much fasterand simpler than saying, “Your keys are rightbehind you on the table, next to the book.”

Do you mean a lot more words are needed to conveyyour message?

So we need to read more on the neurological linkbetween speech and gesture.

But some people still insist on verbalising theirthoughts even if they use body language.

Do you think gesturing should be used only when oneis short of words?

I believe one needs to think in depth before he or shespeaks.

The most fundamental aspect of Piaget's theory isthe belief that intelligence is a process, notsomething that a child has, but something that achild does. Piaget's child does not possessknowledge, but understands the world by acting oroperating in it. ---- These actions represent thecognitive structures of infancy and are called'schemes'.

Furthermore, as a student of biology and zoology,Piaget learned that survival requires adaptation.

One psychologist might concentrate on infants, likePiaget, while another might study the ways in whichchildren's social skills affect their success.

For example, Piaget would describe an infant'sknowledge of a ball in terms of what he or sheperforms with it – pushing, throwing or mouthing it.

For Piaget, development referred to continualrecognition of knowledge into new and more complexstructures.

The cognitive-developmental approach actuallyincludes several related theories, and it is closelyassociated with the work of Piaget.

Nowadays, manual labour has largely been replacedby machines; in some cases machines arecompletely taking over certain processes. Forexample, some machines produce food and energy,as well as transport passengers and goods by land, sea, air and even space. ---- The global connectionbetween humans and machines is made possible bycomputer networks that allow for the merging of oldand new ways of communication. Computers caneven be programmed to simulate the intelligentperformances of living organisms and transfer thisartificial intelligence into motion carried out byrobots.

Machines are used to accomplish almost allagricultural tasks from cultivating the soil to sowingand harvesting.

An increasing number of machines are equipped withsophisticated artificial intelligence and can beprogrammed to handle many types of work.

There is, however, growing concern about thepotential threat of machines becoming more intelligentthan humans.

Others simplify administration, planning ororganizational tasks; for instance, computers supportoffice work, education and research.

This is reducing the number of jobs that are availablefor unskilled workers in these sectors.

---- It was all very well to have a steam engine nextto a factory to turn the generator, to turn the motors, and light the bulbs. But the energy lost along thewires was so great that it would require a steamengine and generator at the end of every street toservice a town. Indeed, early distribution networkshad a limited range of about 2km. The challenge wasto come up with a system that could offer usefulelectricity at the end of a very long wire.

Walking at night, in the past, meant walking through aworld illuminated via the burning of coal.

Reliable electric lighting transformed cities in Europeand America, making streets safer and helping tofoster a 24-hour society.

By the end of the 19th century, electricity offered hugepotential to change the world, but it suffered from onemajor limitation: distribution.

The name electricity was coined by William Gilbert, who had spent years studying magnetism.

While the major source of electricity was water andcoal in the past, today it is nuclear radiation.

'Genre' is a term that refers to a type of mediaproduct or work of art governed by implicit rulesthat are shared by the makers of the product and theaudience for it. Particular types ofcharacters and events, for example, will routinelyoccur in particular genres and others will not.

Every genre has its own standards and conventionsthat distinguish it from others.

Today, there are many people involved in theproduction of the film rating system.

Some agencies control whether the content of thesetypes of media are suitable to be broadcast.

Moreover, you can also come across similardefinitions in music.

On the other hand, there are various reasons whygenre is more controlled in certain countries.
