SHOW DESCRIPTION - “A DAY AT THE ZOO”
The fun theme of this NGC Standard Flower Show inspired 95% member participation. Life-sized giraffes built by members towered to the Lemon Bay clubhouse roof at the entrance. The porch featured a zoo ticket window with a “Free Today” sign. Guests enjoyed popcorn and lemonade while strolling the club gardens. The zoo theme was carried through the schedule titles, the custom show logo, signage, and staging.
The Design Division of 3 Sections, 36 entries included classes of Petite, Invitational and Functional Tables, and Creative Design types as well as a Novice Class to encourage participation by members who had never entered a flower show. Exhibits were staged on rectangular tables and pedestals draped in black fabric by the Committee. The exhibits in one of the three petite classes were displayed on the wall under a “jungle tree”.
The Horticulture Division included 18 Sections, 201 entries. Cut Horticulture (125) exhibits were staged inside the clubhouse on tiered tables draped in black fabric and on a long counter-height cabinet faced with zebra print fabric. Container-grown horticulture exhibits (76) were staged on wooden benches in the shade house. Boxes wrapped in zebra print were used to elevate exhibits.
Education Division exhibits (4) staged on tables draped in black fabric showcased NGC objectives. Botanical Arts Artistic Crafts Exhibits (3 Classes, 12 entries) were staged on a bamboo screen, a tiered table draped in black fabric or a black velvet oval.
All 14 NGC Top Exhibitor Awards offered were awarded.
Classes from a local elementary school exhibited invitational horticulture. Framed student
drawings of favorite zoo animals were displayed in the garden gazebo - “GaZoobo Gallery”.
A plant sale was held during the show. Hundreds of plants propagated by members and zoo animals painted on palm spathes were sold to supplement the club flower show budget.
