with greater freedom and pros-perity — one more hopefulthan the one that precededthem.”
Veterans come from differ-ent corners of America, but allof them demonstrate what isgood about America, he stated. They show generosity, com-passion and a willingness toput aside their own fears andwelfare for the sake of thelarger good.
“We cannot forget thatwhen the guns are silent andthe battlefields are empty, there is an aftermath to war,”Gibson said. “We cannot neg-lect to remember the brokenbodies, the broken minds andthe broken families that re-quire the continued attentionof a grateful nation. As a coun-try, we must remain commit-ted to work diligently toprovide wounded warriorsand the families of our fallen... with our full support.
“Let us commit ourselvesto renew our commitment tothe values and ideas that havemade this nation what it istoday — the greatest nation inthe world,” he added.
Monday’s program wassponsored by the ErnestBowyer Post 791 and its auxil-iary, Roy Anderson PostAmerican Legion and its auxil-iary, D.A.V., Hevle Heimes Postand its auxiliary, and theW.R.C.

Joplin VictimsAre Offered
Existing HomesJOPLIN, Mo. (AP) — Some
of the people left homeless bythe Joplin tornado could beplaced in rental homes nearlyan hour’s drive away, and theFederal Emergency Manage-ment Agency said Monday itwill consider bringing in trail-ers, as it did for New Orleansafter Hurricane Katrina, ifenough homes are not avail-able.
FEMA’s first option forhousing the thousands of dis-placed is to find them existingrental housing within a 55-mileradius of Joplin, because thereisn’t much housing left in thecity of nearly 50,000 residentsthat was left badly damaged bythe May 22 tornado, spokes-woman Susie Stonner told TheAssociated Press. Nearly athird of the city was damagedby the violent storm that leftkilled more than 130 people.Twenty-nine people remainedunaccounted for Monday.
Stonner said that despitethe distance, putting people inpermanent housing is prefer-able to trailers — especially inan area prone to tornadoesand severe weather.
“Wouldn’t you prefer to bein a stable building over a mo-bile home?” she asked. Stonneralso noted that getting thingslike water, sewer lines and de-veloping pads for trailerswould take substantial time.
City Administrator MarkRohr said the goal is to keeppeople as close to home aspossible but that “based onthe circumstances we’ll haveto respond accordingly.” Thecity has not said how manypeople were left homeless bythe twister, but Rohr said 4,500to 5,000 residents have regis-tered with FEMA.
