SRIOV

SRIOV offer a high performance, low latency path for data packets to get to VM.

SRIOV facilitates highest performance I/O connectivity to the VM from the NIC using light weight VFs

Allows partitioning of a single Ethernet Server Adapter port into multiple Virtual Functions. Virtual Functions may be allocated to VMs Each with their own bandwidth allocation.

Virtualized SBC: The Challenges

Most SBCs today are based on proprietary hardwareNetwork processor silicon for fast packet handlingContent-addressable memory for fast flow lookupSpecial co-processors for encrypted signalling and media

Metaswitch chose to build Perimeta SBC on x86Our timing was good … in 2010, x86 had just reached a level ofperformance that enabled a competitive SBC to be built

Perimeta SBC: Innovation in Software

Software ingenuity was the key to successHighly effective use of CPU cache for flow tables & IP blacklistsPacket handling performed as close to the metal as possibleLeveraging all relevant Intel capabilities … DPDK, QuickAssist etc

Successive generations of x86 have led to very useful performance improvements … which come for free

Taking Perimeta into the Cloud

First demonstration of Perimeta in the Cloud: Feb 20128 months before the first white paper on NFV was published

Perimeta architecture and implementation made it very suitable for virtualization

Software designed for x86 from the outsetDecomposed architecture supports independent scale-out ofsignalling and media functions

Key challenge has been maintaining media plane throughputPerformance close to bare metal achieved with both SR-IOV and accelerated vSwitches
