    Changingacarsinertia is a tricky task, rst the car mustbeabletoresistthemomentumofitsownweight,athighspeedthisisalmostimpossiblesothecarhastoslowdown.Asthecarslowsdownitsweightshiftsinaccordancewithitsinertia,itistransferredtothefrontofthecar.Because

    of this the front tires gainmore traction.Withthis im-proved traction the front tirescan beused tograduallyshifttheinertiaofthecarbyturningandmanipulatingthetransferredweightinanewdirection,inthiscase,thedirec-tionofourturn.

    Inracingaturnmustbebrokendownandanalyzedinorderfor the driver to understand the most efcient way to enter,traverseandexittheturn.

    Herewehave threeturnsand the paths that a car couldtheoretically take around them. The rst turn shows the cartakingthetightestpatharoundtheturn,whilethispathisthe most efcient in terms of distance travelled it would alsorequirethecartoslowdownconsiderablyinordertoeffec-tivelyresistinertiaandredirectitselfsuccessfully.

    Inthesecondturnthecartakesthewidestpatharoundtheturn,thiswouldallowthecartomaintainahigherspeedwhile turning sinceit isnot resisting its inertiaasdra-maticallyas itwould inturnone.However this turnalsorequiresthecartotraversemoregroundandtakealongerroutethroughtheturn.

    Inthethirdturnweseethatthecaristakingthesamehighspeedpatharchasitwouldhaveinturntwobutitismeetingtheturnsapexatthesamepointthatitwouldhaveinturnone.Thisistheidealpathtofollowsincethecarmain-tainsahigherrateofspeedaswellastraversinglessdis-tancethroughtheturn.

    Inordertobetterunderstandhowthisisproperlyexecuted,letsbreaktheturndown.Thereare5partstoeveryturntheyare:

    1. The Corner Entry

    2. The Cut Zone

    3. The Middle

    4. The Acceleration Zone

    5. The Exit

    1. At theCorner Entry the driver begins applying thebrakesandslowingthecardown,thisshiftsweighttothe

    frontofthecar,pushesthefrontenddownandgivesthefronttiresmoretraction.

    2. As the driver enters the Cut Zone they release thebreaksandbeginturningthecartowardstheinnerapexoftheturn.

    3.TheMiddleorApexoftheturnisaveryshortdistanceand foronlyasplitsecondthecarshouldberollingwithneitherbrakesorthrottleapplied.

    4.TheAcceleration ZoneisjustpasttheMiddle,atthispointthedriverappliesthethrottleandbeginstoaccelerateoutoftheturnandtowardstheExit.

    5.AttheExitthedrivercompletesthearchwhileacceleratingouttowards thewall

    andleavestheturn.

    The Line: inouranalysiswellbefollowingthewhiteline.Thereareacoupledetoursinthismapforlightweightandheavycarsbutwellbefocusingonthestandardracingline.Alsotakenoteoftheyellowandblackbarsalongtheout-side,theseareareaswherepoordrivingwillleadcarsoffofthetrack.

    Turn One:As you can see the most efcient plan of attackistobrakeatthestartoftheturnorcorner entryandbe-ginwide on the wall,asthecartraversestheturnatitsapexthedrivershouldmaneuverthecartowardsthecenteroftheturn,close on the curve,arcingwideagainattheexit.

    Turn Twohasaslightdeviationjustpasttheapexwherewewouldnormallyseetheacceleration zonebutisnttoodrastic.Sinceitsbetterexplainedinturnseightandninewellmoveontoturnthree.

    Turn Threeistakenabitdifferently,almosttheoppositeofwhatwevediscussedonthepreviouspage,thisisdueto

    theS-curveaheadintoturnfourandthenagainthroughturns ve and six. As you can see the car still breaks beforegoingintotheturn,asindicatedbythereddashedline,butthistimethecargoeswideattheapexoftheturnandanglesitselftomovestraightthroughtheSandreachesanothersharpturnatthecornerentryofturnfour.

    Turn Four:Sincethecarprobablyhasntreachedtoohighofaspeedbythetimeitnearsthewallatturnfourthedrivershouldbeabletoeaseoffthegasjustenoughtomakethisturnwithoutapplyingthebrakes,thiswouldchangeifthedistancebetweenthetwoturnswasgreaterandthecarhadenoughroomtoreachhigherspeed.

    AtTurns Eight and Ninewecanseeamoredramaticexampleofthedrivingpathseeninturntwo.Ratherthanapproach this as one turn the car executes the rst half oftheturnlikeanindividualturnandthenappliesthebrakesjustwideoftheapex,drawinganewturnlineoutofturnnine. This may seem inefcient but in application it allowsforslightlymorespeedandallowsthestraightpathtoturnonetobelengthened,givingthedrivermoretimetoacceler-ateandreachfasterspeedsbeforethenextcornerentry.

    tersneedleintheoptimalpositionforaPerfect LaunchoncethewordGO ashes in your screen its time to ooritandhittheN2O.UsingyourN2Oheregivesthecartheextrapowertoquicklyacceleratethroughgearsandreachitstopspeedfaster.MostofthetimeitsbesttouseallofyourN2Orightoffthestarttogetthecartotopspeed,butagainyoullneedtoanalyzethetracktodeterminethemosteffectiveuseoftheN2O.Intracksthatstart

    Ideallysteeringisdonebygentlyturningthewheelinthedirectionthatyourcarneedstoturn.Turningthewheelfur-therthanneededcanoftentimesleadyourcarintoanun-wantedslideordrift.Driftiscausedwhenthecartriestoturntofast.Thecarsownweightandinertiaresisttheturnandcanpullthecarstiresawayfromtheroad,decreasingtraction andcausingthecartoslideinthedirectionofitsinertia.Sincethere are nodrift styleraces inNeed for Speed:Most Wantedthisisundesirable.Whenacardriftsitislosing valuabletraction that couldbeput tobetteruse bymovingthecarforwardandclosertothegoal.

    Ifyoufeelorhearyourcarstartingtodrift,correctforthisbygentlyeasingoffthegasandturninginthedirectionyourcarissliding,thenusinganothergentlemovementturnyourcar back into the direction you were originally travellingYoucanalsouseyourN2Otosavethecarfromadriftifthedriftisnttoobad,dothisbyhittingtheN2OandthenimmediatelyturninginthedirectionyouwantthecartogoHowever ifthe car has alreadydriftedandturnedtofarawayfromthedirectionitneedstobemoving,N2Omayonlyhelptoslamyourcarintoawall.Watchoutfordriftingindirtorgrass,mostcarswillslideuncontrollablyandsometimesinthesesituationsevenN2Oandgooddrivingcanthelpyou.Almosttotallossof trac-tionathighspeedswillleaveyouatthemercyofthecaranditsinertia.

    Police driving tactics:The TVIorPITmaneuverhasbeenusedfordecadesbythepolice.Generallyapolicecarorcruiserwilltrytousetheirfrontendtopushyourrearendtooneside,forcingthecartoturnsharply.Sincewevealreadycoveredinertiayoucanseehowpushingthecarintoasharpturnathighspeedswill

    causeittolosecontrolandspinout.Assoonasthishappenstheylltrytopinyou.Evasive Tactics: Outrunning the PCsusuallyisnttotoughifyouvegotafastcar,butoncetheyvespunyoutrytoslowdown, turninto thedirectionofyourslide,turnafull180anddriveaway.

    The Box: As more police carscloseinonyouoneofthemmaytrytogetinfrontofyou,whenthis happens they are usually

    trying to slow you down andsurround you or box you inoncethishappenstheywillallslowtoastopandeffectivelytrapyourcar.Evasive Tactics: Avoiding a box is rela-tivelyeasy,simplynotdrivingbehindtheleadcruis-ercanhelptoavoidthebox.Weavingbackandforthwillcausetheleadcruisertoloseyouandallowyoutopass.Ifyoucantpassthecruisercontinueweavinguntilyoucannd another way to evade, such as a sharp turn or pursuitbreaker.YoucanalsoperformaTVImaneuveronthelead-ingcruiserbynudgingthecruisersrearendwithyourfrontfender,onceyouvegottherearendofthecruiserangled

    The Rolling Block:TherollingblockisasituationwherethreeormorePCswillgetinfrontofyouandsimultane-ouslyslowtoastop.OncestoppedmorePCswillcloseinbehindyouandendyourreignofvehicularterror.Evasive Tactics:Thebestwaytoavoidarollingblockistonotbearoundit,ifyouseePCstryingtopassyouitmaybetimetotakeasharpturnontoadifferentstreetortrytoper-formaPITmaneuveronthePCsinfrontofyoutogetthemoutofyourway.IfthePCsmanagetostopyouimmediatelytryaJ-Turnandseeifyoucantescapegoingtheotherway.

    The Road Block:Inaroadblock,multiplecruisersorRhinoSUVswilllineupandtry to block off the road. Slammingintoaroadblockatthewronganglecanbringyoutoacompletestoporeven cause your car to ip. Listentotheradiosincepolicewillnotifyothercruisersofaroadblocksetupahead.Evasive Tactics: Look for theweakspotintheroadblock,using

    Road Spikes:Roadspikescanendyourrunimmediately.Ifyourcarhitsthespikesyourtireswillblowandyourcarbecomesun-drivable,copswillhaveyoublockedinwithinafewseconds.Policewillnot only an-

    nouncearoadspikeovertheradiobuttheywill also indicatewhether ornot thespikesareontheright,leftorcenter,keepyourearsopen.Evasive Tactics:Evasivetacticsforroadspikes are the same as road blocks. Useyourspeedbreakertoquicklyseewherethe

    spikesareandnavigatearoundthem.

    Rhino SUVs:Rhinoswillcomeatyoufromthefrontandattempttoslamintoyourcar.If

    theyresuccessfulyoullbebroughttoacompletestopwhichincreasesyourchancesofbeingbusted.

    Evasive Tactics:TryleadingtheRhinostoonesideoftheroadandastheygetclosequicklydrivetotheotherside,al-ternativelyyoucanquicklyshiftintoreverseandturn180.

    General Tactics:

    PracticeyourJ-Turn,dothisbyshiftingintoreverseandturningthewheeljustenoughtoperforma180.Onceyourcarhasturnedaround,hitthegasandgetoutofthere.

    Look for Pursuit Breakers, when you nd one make surethatmostofyourpursuersareclosebehindyou,thisinsuresthatyoutakeoutasmanycruisersaspossible.

    InCoolDownlookforhidingspots,indicatedbytheblueringsonyourmap.ThesewillspeeduptheprogressoftheCoolDownmeter.

    Cheating: Unfortunately with almost all on-line gamestherearecheatersandwithNeedForSpeed:MostWantedthisisnoexception.Cheatersareusuallyprettyeasytospotbuttheyarealmostimpossibletodealwithbecauseofthelackofhostcontrolandoptions.Somecheatsthathavebeennoticedarethefollowing;

    Infnite N2O: These guys are pretty easy to spot, the in-niteN2OcheatgivesthemtheabilitytoholddowntheN2Othrough theentire raceif theyfeellike it.AquicklookattherestatswillshowthattheyusearidiculousamountofN2Ocomparedtoanyoneelse(forasprintracetheaverageisaround40-55)sometimesthesenumberswillbeinthehighhundredsforsprintracesandeveninthethousandsforcircuits.

    Acceleration Cheat:Theaccelerationcheatisabittough-ertospotsinceitgenerallywontchangetomuchintheusersstatsotherthanaveragespeed.Onewaytotellifsomeoneisusingthischeatistowatchthemcloselyaftertheycrashandorcometoacompletestop.Theaccelerationcheatgivesitsusertheabilitytoinstantlyregaintopspeedaftercom-ingtoacompletestop.Ifsomeoneiscrashingalotandstillwinningtheracesagainstgooddrivers,thisisusuallythe

    cause.Cop Car Cheat:Thischeatwontactuallygivetheuseraclearadvantageoverothercarssinceperformancematchingwillkeepthemde-tuned.Allthecopcarcheatdoesisallowtheusertodriveoneofthepolicevehiclesforarace.IfyouseeaRhinoSUVoranyoftheotherPCsatthestartofarace

    Connecting:Connecting toa host can befrustratingforeveryone.Theinterfacehasmultipleiconsforthestateofeveryonesconnection.Theiconsareasfollows;

    isstilltryingtoconnecttothehostandthatasolidconnec-tionhasnotorcannotbeestablished.

    Great:ThisIconindicatesagreatconnectionwith the host, the race should gosmoothly and with outmuchlagifanyatall.

    OK:ThisiconindicatesagoodorOKconnectiontothehost.Theremaybesomelag,buttheraceisstillplay-able.

    Poor:Thisiconindicatesapoororbelowaveragecon-nectiontothehost.Racingwithapoorconnectioncanresult in lag and difcult or hindered play.

    Unsure:Indicatesthattheconnectiontothehostcannotbedetermined.Resultscouldvarydramaticallyortheusermaynotbeabletoconnectatall.

    Sportsmanship: Its a bigword! Nothing ruins a goodrace like a poor loser or a bad winner.
