INTRODUCTION TO NFC

• Near Field Communication (NFC) is a standards-based, short-range wireless connectivity technology that enables simple and safe two-way interactions between electronic devices.

• It follows a set of standards for smartphones and similar devices to establish radio communication with each other by touching them together or bringing them into close proximity, usually no more than a few inches.

HOW NFC WORKS

• It's a short-range, low power wireless link evolved from radio-frequency identification (RFID) tech that can transfer small amounts of data between two devices held a few centimeters from each other.

• Unlike Bluetooth, no pairing code is needed, and because it's very low power, no battery in the device being read.

• By tapping your phone on a contactless payment terminal in a shop, train station it is able to identify your account and takes payment through an app on your phone

• NFC standards cover communications protocols and data exchange formats, and are based on existing radio-frequency identification (RFID) standards including ISO/IEC 14443 and FeliCa. The standards include ISO/IEC 18092 and those defined by the NFC Forum, which was founded in 2004 by Nokia,

• A radio frequency (RF) sine wave generated by the reader (phone) is used to transmit energy to the tag and retrieve data from the tag.

• When the NFC in the device is active then it continuously generates periodic sine wave signal at frequency 13.56 MHz center frequency.

• If there is any tag within the area of magnetic flux generated by the sine wave, tag gets energy from the magnetic fluxes and create counter frequency or change the frequency properties of the original sine wave generated by phone.

• The changes are detected by the phone and phone knows that there is a tag nearby. RFID systems communicating on very short range are commonly known as close couple systems.

• The range where communication is considered to be close coupled is between 0 and 1 cm. Close coupling is also preferred for systems with high security requirements.

ADVANTAGES OF NFC OVER BARCODE TICKETS

• NFC can be used without the phone being switched on. So, for example if the users battery runs out before they have used their ticket it can still be read,

• Unlike barcodes which need to be visible on the screen of the smart phone. Additionally, barcodes can be easily copied therefore making NFC chips more secure.

• QR codes only allow for one way communication where as NFC can communicate both ways between two devices or even rewrite the information on an NFC tag if permitted to do so.

• Businesses may find this level of interaction more appealing, but the costs of NFC are currently higher than implementing QR codes.

ADVANTAGES OF NFC OVER BLUETOOTH TECHNOLOGY?

• They are both short-range communication techniques integrated into mobile phones,

• However NFC uses far less power than Bluetooth and can be used when the phone is switched off (handy if the users mobile phone battery dies).

• NFC is compatible with existing RFID infrastructures.

• The user can connect quicker with NFC than Bluetooth technology because NFC connection is established automatically, where as with Bluetooth users have to initialize the connection themselves.

ADVANTAGES OF USING NFC

• NFC technology is versatile and can be used in any industry

• Business can operate and respond in real time due to the speed of the technology

• Users do not need to be technically minded as the technology is automatic and connections do not need to be set up

• The technology supports secure applications

• There is no need to manufacture physical tickets therefore saving money

• The technology is interoperable globally, particularly useful when used for payment in various countries

• When used in a ticket or payment mode the user has the ability to view and load value using their smart phone

APPLICATIONS OF USING NFC

• NFC is able to replace the pairing of Bluetooth-enabled devices, or the configuration of a Wi-Fi network through PINs and keys, by simply touching the two devices to be paired or connected to the network, or by touching the device to a tag

• For door locks that are equipped with an actuator and a short range contactless reader, a simple upgrade may allow NFC devices to substitute for contactless cards.

• All NFC transactions take place within a very small area, anywhere from a touch to 4 centimeters. This means that you can't unknowingly purchase something because you walk next to a smart poster.

Page 16: Nfc Ppt Gagz

APPLICATIONS OF USING NFC

• It can be used to gain entry into other events like concerts and sports events, with Manchester City FC using NFC for its season tickets.

• It's likely that NFC could eventually be used to open your house, pay for your bus or subway pass, unlock your car door or open your safe.

• NFC devices could eventually decrease the load in your wallet, by eradicating the need for cash, credit cards, store cards and driving licenses. All information could potentially be stored on your mobile handset. Just don't lose it.

Page 17: Nfc Ppt Gagz

DISADVANTAGES OF USING NFC

• QR codes will be much easier to scan. Smart phones will have better cameras (which are the factor holding back fast QR scanning on the older phones). QR reading software will be built into the phone’s camera software, meaning no special app is required.

• Another major risk to NFC is computer hacking or phone hacking. As mobile phones become more developed, they become much like a hand held computer, and as with computers, they become prone to viruses

• For Example, include phone’s owner credit card information, bill payments, social security information, etc. Moreover, as technology advances, it will becomes easier for hackers to do this.

• NFC technology is relatively new, so not every mobile phone will be compatible with this technology

Page 18: Nfc Ppt Gagz

DISADVANTAGES OF USING NFC

• Only consumers with smart phones can use NFC services

• Older generations tend to be skeptical towards adopting new technologies and may not want to go completely card-less

• Large amount of sensitive information is stored inside a smartphone, the risk of hackers trying to access this data is higher

SUMMARY• Near Field Communication (NFC) is a contactless,

wireless means of transferring information between two close objects

•  It is activated when two antennae communicate with each other through a magnetic field.

• Devices can come in the form of smart-cards, mobile phones, credit and debit cards, cash machines and computers to name a few.

•  NFC is similar to Bluetooth, but is a much faster means of communication with enabled devices able to instantly recognize each other. However, NFC has a much shorter range (making it more secure) and a much slower data transfer rate.

• Benefits include easy mobile payment and identification by serving-up personal info, such as bank account and passport chip details.
