Welcome to Cologne!
The Water-Energy-Food Nexus (WEF Nexus) is currently a highly important debate in environmental policy with expected
implications for priorities in research, education and international cooperation. Increasing demands for water, energy and
food together with external and internal change drivers on current natural resources use patterns make the Nexus idea
crucial to understand the multiple resource use interlinkages. In our current projects with partners worldwide, we address
together many of the key interlinkages like sustainable land and water management practices, climate related risks in terms
of droughts and extremes or increasing resource use efficiencies along river basins.
The Nexus Weeks brings together participants from various Nexus-related case studies and projects. The event aims at
involving partners from a variety of international Nexus related projects in presenting their case studies as “nexus labo-
ratories” useful for enhancing educational contents and outlining future collaborative research activities. In the scope of
this Nexus symposium international experts and young researchers will be invited to provide insights in ongoing research
and further research demand. Different case studies with WEF-Nexus related topics at river basin scale are presented from
countries such as Jordan, Sudan, Ethiopia, Egypt, Pakistan, Chile, Ecuador, Costa Rica and Colombia and also larger scales
as the Mekong, the Nile and Paraiba do Sul region or even global scale. The symposium aims at expanding the network of
partners related to Nexus topics and interdisciplinary regional and basin planning initiatives and offers an opportunity as an
exchange platform.
Alongside a public symposium, an excursion and different discussion forums, the Week is organized in different tracks:
• Nile Basin Plenaries: The plenaries are dedicated to present current work on the WEF Nexus from the joint project
“Enquiry-Based Learning the Curricula of Master Level Programmes in the Water and Land Nexus” with Jordan, Sudan
and Ethiopia, including guests from Egypt
• Basin Plenaries: Ongoing work from various Nexus related projects such as TropiSeca (Colombia, Ecuador and Costa
Rica), EDUNexus (Chile), InduNexus (Pakistan) and ADAPTA (Brasil). In the plenaries, participants will present basin
perspectives on the WEF Nexus in the context of their current projects.
We hope you have a profitable and enjoyable Nexus Week in Cologne and that our meeting to lead to concrete products
including common publications, co-supervision of students and project collaboration.
