Despite mounds of snow everywhere, spring really is in the air. And if spring is really coming, can summer be far behind?

I mention summer because for the second year your Chamber is supporting the city of Saint Paul’s “Right Track” initiative. This program is designed to give high school juniors an intensive work experience during the summer between their junior and senior year. Participants are paid minimum wage by participating businesses and, in addition to their work experience at your firm, receive job training skills as part of the program to prepare them for their higher educational objectives.

Won’t you participate? Your engagement not only benefits your firm over the summer months, but prepares a young person for the future workforce. We need highly talented, motivated future workers. Let’s invest now to build that workforce.

Find more information on Right Track at the City of Saint Paul web site or by contacting your public affairs team here at the Chamber. We are going to participate and we hope you do to.

Thank you.

There aren’t many subjects that every one of us has an opinion on. Isn’t the polite advice to never bring up politics or religion in a group? Well, add transportation to that list as well. There are no shortage of opinions on what needs to get done next, and a severe shortage of funds to do the projects with!

Your Chamber is heavily engaged in transportation issues, all types, because we know that a functioning, 21st century transportation infrastructure is key to our economic growth. Without transportation your employees can’t get to work, your goods and services can’t move around, and your suppliers, vendors, and partners can’t interact with you. Your lean operation, maximizing the value of every dollar you have, depends on you getting the business input and outputs you need and want on time and on schedule. Without transportation…you can’t make that happen.

We know that transportation is not just about one mode. We believe strongly that all modes create value and that a true multi-modal solution provides alternatives that commuters and businesses alike can leverage.

Highways and Bridges

Your Chamber has hardly been quiet on this front. From the Cayuga Bridge project on 35E to the Corridors of Commerce award on 694, we believe strongly that the East Metro needs parity with the West Metro in terms of our highway and bridge infrastructure. Interstate 694 between 35E and 35W is a great example. Absent the recent win of some $30 million dollars to create dynamic shoulders on 694, this stretch of highway would continue to experience what MNDOT says is up to 5 hours of congestion a day, five days a week. We are pleased to see dynamic shoulders as a start to solving this congestion, but we will be even happier when we see the Rice Street bridge intersection rebuilt to accommodate the level of traffic that this stretch of highway experiences daily. Commerce can’t move forward when it is standing still, and congestion hurts our ability to grow this region.

Transit

We are equally aggressive in working with our partners across the region on transit issues. The chart on previous page shows where the key transit lines are in the Federal Transit Administration planning process. As you can see, our most advanced line, the Gateway Corridor from Woodbury into downtown Saint Paul, still has a way to go. But we will push this line, and all of our East Metro lines, to make sure that Saint Paul remains a spoke in the East Metro transit system. We have an updated, state of the art transit hub at Union Depot, now we need to build on that success and add more capacity.

Metro Transit reports that 82% of all riders of public transit are either going to and from work or school. So employers win twice! Either your employees are using public transit to get to work, eliminating the need for you to add more parking spaces in your lot, or your future employees are preparing for the day they will enter the workforce. In both cases public transit provides these workers with options that may not exist if they needed to own a car. We owe it to our employers to continue to

advocate for a transit network that provides the flexibility and the reliability that our workers need, and that employers demand.

Everything Else!

We regularly stand with our colleagues at the Metropolitan Airport Commission as they advance our airport nationally and

indeed internationally. Having a hub airport, with international connects on multiple continents, provides our members with the connectivity to world markets they need to drive business. As exports continue to expand, in our interconnected world, the advantages of MSP only continue to grow. Likewise we work closely with our partners at the Saint Paul Port Authority to support key investments in our roads and river infrasture.

Did we mention “everything else?” From streetcars to bike paths, pedestrian walkways to…whatever comes next, your Chamber will engage to make sure investments are timely, are sized for the right capacity, solve problems that matter to our members, and build on a regional equity strategy that balances investment across the metropolitan area.

Did you know Minnesota ranks the least engaged workforce in the US? Whether you’re a small business owner or a leader at a Fortune 100 company, this news can lead to focus on the negative, making it more difficult to see opportunities. Based upon a study, to effectively position ourselves for future growth it’s critical to foster positive attitudes and develop skills that affirm people’s value.

This session will provide specific and applicable concepts to enhance our ability to:1. Focus on the areas that will improve our attitude and position our organizations for growth 2. Clarify strategic themes with a vision to empower us and our organizations to reach our goals 3. Follow a consultative approach to determine best practices that improve engagement and productivity

Q. Brief overview of your organization and what you offer/sets you apart?

A. It’s an exciting time for my company as we undergo a major transformation from the Crowne Plaza St. Paul Riverfront Hotel to the InterContinental Hotel brand this summer. The changes will include completely renovated guest rooms, suites, meeting spaces, lobby, and a bold new restaurant concept. The new style will reflect the "mod" mid-century era - with clean modern lines, but with comfort and luxury to meet

the needs of today's traveler. With world-class service standards being set in place and a concierge program that will provide our guests with an authentic and memorable Saint Paul experience, the property will

herald our guests to reflect on the past but enjoy a new and improved version of our city. Don Draper from Mad Men would approve.

Q. How long have you been an ambassador?

A. Four months. I think I can still get away with being "new.'

Q. What do you enjoy most about being a Chamber member?

A. Where to start... I am going to answer this in a Top Five format:

5) The caliber of speakers is second to none. What other organization can provide you with immediate access to the people that run our city, lead one of the top zoos in the country, and host one of the most popular shows on HGTV?

4) There are so many great event venues in the Saint Paul area. Chamber events provide the perfect opportunity to experience some of the best…and Saint Paul knows a thing or two about hospitality.

3) Every Chamber event is a unique and interesting experience.

2) There is no better way to meet the people who represent the businesses that help our community thrive.

1) Every time I leave a chamber event, I reflect on how glad I am that I went.

Q. What is one piece of advice you would offer fellow members?

A. Click the registration button, step away from your desk, and get out there. At Chamber events there are people to meet, different perspectives to gain, and often, cocktails.

Q. Fun tidbit?

A. I have decided (and now it's right here in writing) to do a 5K race every month in Saint Paul (or surrounding area). Who's in?

Our Ambassador Committee plays a vital role in ensuring afantastic member experience. The team is comprised of committedand engaged SPACC members dedicated to attending events, ribbon cuttings, and reaching out to members via phone andpersonal visits. Interested in joining the team? Tell us about your recent accomplishments/expansion.

We are currently in the process of giving the restaurant and bar a facelift. Nothing drastic but rather an updated look after being in business for 13 years. We’ve painted, spruced up the wood, and added some new décor and artwork, and even a new sound system in the bar. We plan on continuing our remodeling into the spring and summer (as soon as this horrible snow melts) replacing the flooring and even extending these changes and additions to our outdoor patio space as well. We want to continue to accommodate our regular clientele and hopefully attract some new young professionals and future leaders of Saint Paul.

What’s a fact about your business most people don’t know?

That we are here, open for business! After operating and servicing our community for 13 years, we still have customers tell us that they

are first time visitors or we receive phone calls inquiring about our location or services. Many people often comment that they thought we were a grocery store. We do have food for sale, but the best part is that we prepare it for you and we even clean up when you are done.
