Social Media, blah, blah, blah. Getting tired of it? Well you better wake up! Not only is social media here, but increasingly younger consumers are checking your social communications first, before they go to your web site. It doesn’t matter what industry you are in, or what you do, there is an angle where social media can work for you.

We recently made a major upgrade in our online member directory so you can list all of your company's social media channels. Please take advantage of this option. Not only does this help you when someone is looking your business up in our directory, it also helps when we want to directly mention you in chamber social media communications. Just having a business listing doesn’t have the same impact as when we can use your Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other

channels to allow others to see the good news.

You may think you are filled to the brim with social media tips and hints. Well, you are, but…there is always more. The market and the techniques for how to best leverage these tools changes daily. Because of this, your Chamber continues to offer sessions on social media that regularly sell out!

Participate, challenge yourself, and stay engaged.

From the creation of programming to support students in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), to storm recovery and rescue efforts, to the Girl Scouts, to a deep commitment of giving back through volunteerism, 3M and the 3M Foundation are committed – as a science and technology company – to improving communities across the world. United Way Worldwide recently recognized 3M with the top national honor, the Spirit of America® award which is given for philanthropy, volunteer engagement and community impact.

We are honored that 3M is one of Greater Twin Cities United Way’s “Million Plus” partners. The company raised $8.5 million for 135 communities across the U.S. through its 2011 “Every One Counts. Live United” United Way campaign. Employees also volunteered 200,000 hours and they

serve on United Way boards in 16 U.S. states plus Brazil, Chile and Colombia. With 500 employees based here, it is a source of

pride for us to know that 3M is so interconnected and invested in our community. The Spirit of America® award celebrates the commitment, dedication and excellence of 3M and their foundation for 60 years of service to the Twin Cities region, the state of Minnesota, and nationally.

With 680,000 people living in or at the edge of poverty in the Twin Cities nine-county region, of them, 32 percent are children. That’s more than a half-million people in

the metro area who are living on an annual income of $44,100 or less for a family of four. United Way is fortunate to have the unique ability to work across complex issues with hundreds of community partners.

3M and the 3M Foundation:60 years of outstanding service for Minnesota…and beyond!

At United Way, we monitor trends, identify gaps and coordinate broad responses to ensure that donors are able to see measurable results. Our plan attacks poverty's root causes through 10 measurable goals. We provide solutions that are interconnected, so that people in need have the best chance of success. United Way is working to help children succeed, stabilizing families and empowering people to live healthy lives. We have strong collaborations with companies like 3M and organizations such as the 3M Foundation. Through interconnected services such as 2-1-1, United Way served nearly one million people in 2012.

3M and the 3M Foundation have many touch-points: quality out-of-school programs for youth development such as the Girl Scouts; arts and culture, and higher education.

But their workers are on the ground as well by providing relief and supplies to communities impacted by natural disasters such as the Moore, Oklahoma tornado and those still working to recover from Hurricane Sandy. It’s about Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR); 3M and the Foundation model that for many corporations around the world.

Education programs supported by 3M reach over 7.6 million young people each year; programs include science fairs and the Twin Cities based Generation Next that are closing the achievement gap of low-income and students of color. More than 1,700 3M employees volunteer nationwide to support education, including 500 St. Paul-based staff.

The value of thinking and working globally with multinational companies like 3M is something I learned through my experience in United Way Worldwide’s Global Action Leaders program. An example of the development of strong global CSR partnerships is United Way India and 3M India beginning to create new community impact initiatives for new investments.

United Way builds unique multi-sector partnerships to create pathways out of poverty in our community with 3M and other corporate, community, and nonprofit partners.

Join us as we congratulate and salute 3M for an innovative and successful workplace campaign that raised millions in resources, hundreds of volunteer hours through United Way Caring Connection, and sponsorship of community events and activities.

In 2005, your Chamber created a tradition called Celebrate Business Success.

This award honors those who provide leading examples of how members of the business community contribute to a shared vision of economic success throughout the Saint Paul/East Metro area.

Sponsored by:

At the Chamber’s May Membership Meeting, Rogerio Turatti accepted a Celebrate Business Success award on behalf of Gerdau. Gerdau is the leading producer of long steel in the Americas and one of the largest suppliers of special long steel in the world. It has over 45,000 employees and industrial operations in 14 countries, which together represent an installed capacity of over 25 million metric tons of steel per year. There are countless major projects containing Gerdau steel, including the World Trade Center Vehicle Security Center, the Panama Canal expansion, and professional baseball and football stadiums across the country.
