While normally I like to make resolutions that I can easily break (exercise more, eat right, reduce stress) this year I’m going to try something new. Let me know if you like these because these aren’t about me, they are about you.

I’m going to:

- Work harder at demonstrating and qualifying the value that the Chamber creates for our members, each and every day.

- Cajole, coerce, and everything in between to get members to attend a Chamber event. Once you experience our events, you’ll come back on your own!

- Create new opportunities for our members to put

their business and services in front of our business community. Insist that our public officials engage with and respond to the business community on the initiatives that will improve the East Metro’s business climate.

And finally,

- Have fun. We will serve our members with passion, with spirit, and with the understanding that even on the tough days, this Chamber is a great force for business and it is an honor to represent your interests in this community.

Have a wonderful 2013 and we look forward to working with you throughout the year.

Member Success Story: Minnesota Conway Fire & Safety

By Ryan Bierwerth, President, Minnesota Conway Fire & safety

As President, I define Minnesota Conway Fire & Safety’s identity with three major tenets: professionalism, quality, and focus on relationships. I have become more and more active with SPACC over the last few years—in particular, through Leadership Saint Paul. (You may have heard of my LSP class, the Class of 2011, a.k.a. the Best Class Ever—we have Mike Schwartz's trophy to prove it, which we have earned two years in a row). Anyway, in becoming more and more active with SPACC, I have

learned about many other member companies that I think share MN Conway’s identity.

One of those companies is Morrissey Hospitality Companies, Inc.

As recently as a few months ago, MN Conway had done virtually no work with Morrissey. I wanted to change that, and, knowing

that Morrissey was very active in the SPACC, I reached out to the SPACC to start my quest.

It started with a couple of e-mails with Director of Member Services Mindee Kastelic. Then I attended a meeting at SPACC with Mindee and Jonathan Weinhagen—and they gave me Michael Meyer’s contact info. I e-mailed Michael. Michael and I met for coffee. Michael suggested I contact David Soos (another LSP’er), Director of Restaurants for Morrissey. I then e-mailed David. I, along with one of MN Conway’s salesmen, met with David at Hillcrest Golf Club (a Morrissey property) for a simple meet and greet. We met again for a walk-through of Hillcrest’s clubhouse, and to discuss how and when we would provide our fire life safety testing and inspection services—including fire extinguishers, fire sprinklers, fire alarms, kitchen hood fire suppression, and kitchen hood cleaning. We submitted a proposal to David for these services. David then had to chase down the right people on his end at Hillcrest to present the proposal to them (and hopefully advocate its approval). This whole process took nearly five months.

Parallel to all of this, I had been talking to Jennie Schader, Membership & Marketing Director at Hillcrest, about potentially becoming a member of Hillcrest. I grew up around the East Side and Hillcrest, having been a caddie in grade school and member of the grounds crew in high school. From my perspective, it was serendipitous that the SPACC golf event was at Hillcrest this year. My roots are there. So, I had been corresponding with Jennie during this whole time while we were talking with David Soos.

As of early this winter, everything came to a head. I am happy to report the following:

1. MN Conway has been approved to provide our full suite of fire life safety inspection and testing services at Hillcrest—a one-year contract. We plan on kicking everything off with our kitchen hood cleaning services next week.

2. My wife, son, and I have become members at Hillcrest.

Better yet, regarding item 1 above, David has mentioned that others

at Morrissey are asking about MN Conway’s services—for different locations. We will hit a home run at Hillcrest, and then, with that testimonial in our hands, we plan on getting involved at other Morrissey properties. My goal is that, a year from now, you can have dinner at The St. Paul Grill knowing that you are dining in the safest building in town because its fire protection systems are inspected and tested by the best—MN Conway.

Anyway, this all started with some e-mails between myself, Mindee, and Jonathan. This sort of experience is exactly what I expect from the Chamber. As you can see from the story above, it was not easy and it took a ton of time, smiles, and persistence. I do not expect the Chamber to simply hand me business; but, I expect it to facilitate introductions with people in leadership positions—people like Michael Meyer, David Soos, etc.

As you can tell, I am excited where this is all heading. And, I am excited for more future success stories like this.

Membership Meeting Featuring Liz Logelin Foundation Founder, MattLogelin$30 Members$50 Non-Members

Tuesday, January 29 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Town & Country Club300 Mississippi River Boulevard North Saint Paul, MN 55104

Matt and Liz Logelin were high school sweethearts. After years of long-distance dating, the pair finally settled together in Los Angeles, and they had it all: a perfect marriage, a gorgeous new home, and a baby girl on the way. Liz's pregnancy was rocky, but they welcomed Madeline, beautiful and healthy, into the world on March 24, 2008.

Just twenty-seven hours later, Liz suffered a pulmonary embolism and died instantly, without ever holding the daughter whose arrival she had so eagerly awaited. Though confronted with devastating grief and the responsibilities of a new and single father, Matt did not surrender to devastation; he chose to keep moving forward-- to make a life for Maddy. The Liz Logelin Foundation was established to assist widows and widowers with young families who find themselves in the heartbreaking, catastrophic situation of having lost a spouse, life-partner, and parent. The Foundation’s goal is to financially assist these families as they deal with the loss of their loved ones, and struggle to move forward.

In 2005, your Chamber created a tradition called Celebrate Business Success.

This award honors those who provide leading examples of how members of the business community contribute to a shared vision of economic success throughout the Saint Paul/East Metro area.

At the Chamber’s December Membership Meeting, Ken Ginkel accepted a Celebrate Business Success award on behalf of the National Dizzy & Balance Center. National Dizzy & Balance Center was incorporated in August 2004 in Edina, MN. The clinical and business model was first developed by Kenneth Ginkel whose vision for the business was to provide the very best patient care at every aspect of the treatment process for dizziness and balance disorders. National Dizzy & Balance Center is now one of the few facilities in the U.S. that combines physician care, diagnostic testing, and rehabilitation. The combination of these specialties in one facility has lead to better patient outcomes, lower costs, and more convenience for the patient.
