Specifications Inaugural programme for the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) New Wave Festival dated 1983 (please see attached picture). BAM is one of the world’s most influential performing arts centres. The (retired 1999) President and CEO Harvey Lichtenstein supported emerging artists at the time; Laurie Anderson, Merce Cunnigham, Twyla Tharp, Bill T Jones and Pina Bausch, and was supported in his efforts by Susan Sontag (author), Roy Rauschenberg (artist) and John Cage (composer) who are all listed in the programme along with David Geffen (founder of Asylum Records) and Ed Koch (the then Mayor of NYC) as members of the Board of Trustees.

Inaugural programme for the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) New Wave Festival dated 1983 (please see attached picture). BAM is one of the world’s most influential performing arts centres. The bespoke cover, produced specifically for the Festival Programme, is by Roy Lichtenstein, the prominent American pop artist and the Festival’s Chairman. The original poster is listed on the collection of the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation website (http://www.lichtensteinfoundation.org/) as Next Wave Festival (Brooklyn Academy of Music) Poster. He is one of the founding members of BAM’s New Wave Festival and is listed along with, amongst others, his wife Dorothy. The programme events listing:

End pieces include their showcase designs and artwork. The programme also includes seven photographs by Robert Mapplethope almost all of which are dated 1983 which were taken specifically for the programme:

The programme measures 8” x 12” and is in very good condition and has 64 pages It also includes interviews of the festival artists specifically for the programme The provenance was that John Howlett (deceased), Vice President for Marketing and Promotion, was my close friend. He went on to the Los Angeles Opera and was a friend and colleague of Placido Domingo, the Los Angeles Opera’s General Director.
