Dear reader,

This issue of red. magazine represents a new mobile reality, which enables us to hold a world of information in the palm of our hand. With mobile computing capabilities rapidly penetrating our private and corporate lives, we opted to have our magazine go virtual too.

This limited print version of our first iPad edition celebrates the transition from paper to digital. From now on, you will be able to explore every article – online or on your iPad – complete with links to exclusive videos and the latest stories.

Devoted to a new way of sharing and organizing information, this issue’s technology news focuses on collaboration over the IP network. We will take a closer look at how networked collaboration opens up new possibilities for driving knowledge and efficiency and how it helps us to create a competitive advantage.

We will also introduce the newest members of the Barco family: IP Video Systems and JAOtech. Whether in the hospital or control room, we are committed to investing in innovative, collaborative technology platforms.

Our ‘City Special’ takes you to London – where, for the past four years, 70,000 volunteers have worked on over 1,000 projects to bring people from all over the world together during the Olympic summer. It just goes to show that collaboration is truly everywhere.

Happy reading,Eric Van Zele

Barco has become a household name at the 700-bed Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) in Coimbatore, India. Dr. Mathew Cherian, head of the radiology department, chose Barco’s Coronis Fusion 6MP DL displays for their high quality and their versatility when visualizing 3D, grayscale and color images at the same time. After successfully testing the Coronis Fusion in practice, KMCH decided to order Barco’s clinical review displays, Nio 5MP display systems for mammography and the MD-4221, a 42-inch surgical display. “We are planning to equip all our operating theaters with this HD LCD display, in order to further optimize our working processes,” said Dr. Cherian.

The brightest LED video walls got even brighter! When it comes to brightness, Barco LED video walls have always led the pack. Now, with the introduction of 3rd generation LEDs, we’re taking another important step forward – boosting brightness levels by no less than 33%.

The newly introduced 3rd generation LEDs in our complete range of liquid-cooled LED video walls increase brightness levels to meet – and even exceed – lamp-based video walls. This significantly enhances operator viewing comfort and further expands the usability of LED video walls. Additionally, when operating at today’s standard brightness levels, the new LEDs con-sume 33% less power than the previous generation, which helps companies to reduce their ecological footprint. The enhanced brightness is particularly important for the OLS series of 3D video walls, because it partially compensates for the traditional loss in brightness caused by 3D goggles.

“Let’s do something round and big!”

said Israeli artist and architect Ron

Arad when the director of London’s

Roundhouse arts venue asked him to

create an installation for the venue’s

birthday. It took the ingenuity of a

smart design team, the technical ex-

pertise of Blitz Communications, and

12 Barco RLM-W8 projectors to bring

Arad’s design idea to life.

London’s Roundhouse arts venue began life in 1846 as a true ‘roundhouse’: a circular building where steam engines were repaired. Over the years, it has served as a liquor warehouse, a theater space, and a venue for legendary concerts. Arad wanted to celebrate the round form of the building while creating a venue in which people would be immersed in images. The result is Curtain Call – a giant, suspended, circular installation made of 5,600 translucent silicon rods that form a 360° screen. The work of Arad’s favorite artists, musicians and friends are visualized on the rods.

Realizing a vision

When Barco heard about Arad’s ambitious project, it contacted Blitz Communications, one of the UK’s leading providers of audio-visual equipment and a trusted Barco partner for over 10 years. Paul Hutton, Managing Director: “Barco suggested we tackle the challenge together. While Arad knew exactly what he wanted, he didn’t know how to achieve it technically. We promised to deliver the projection and content delivery system he needed.”

Versatile and quiet

Barco’s RLM-W8 three-chip DLP WUXGA projectors proved to be the best fit thanks to their precise colors, high image quality and flawless, quiet operation. Hutton: “The projectors had to behave well in portrait mode with the lamp oriented in an unconventional position. They per-formed flawlessly for 13 hours a day for 31 days – a true testament to their versatility and reliability! Plus, the ‘most silent projector’ marketing claim is really true. That was crucial, as it let the visitors really concentrate on the videos and artwork.”

A great journey

“I had an idea of how it was going to look, but the end result has far exceeded my expectations. It has been a great journey!” Ron Arad commented. Curtain Call ran in the Roundhouse throughout August 2011. Due to its overwhelming success, the organizers are

now thinking about travelling around the world with the exhibition.

When the image of a vehicle-pedestrian accident appeared on-screen as it was

happening – enabling first responders to deploy even before the 911 call came

in – Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd knew he’d struck gold with his new col-

laboration wall. “If it saves only one life, it’s been well worth every penny,”

commented Sheriff Judd, leader of the Sheriff’s Office in Winter Haven, Florida.

Fortunately, the Office’s Emergency Com-munications Center (ECC) doesn’t encounter such dire circumstances every day, but Polk County knows it is well-prepared for any emergency with the help of Barco’s net-worked visualization platform.

• Monitor activities via AVL GPS tracking systems and video cameras in the center’s call-take and dispatch areas

• Identify a suspicious incident or crime in-progress, locate cars using GPS, view interstate pile-ups, and isolate hostage situations

WIG-crafts are virtually unknown today, but Korean Wingship Technology Corp. aims to mature and commercialize the technology. In order to simulate the behavior of these ‘naval airships’ and aid R&D, the company relies on three Barco NH-12 stereoscopic projectors.

Is it a boat? Is it a plane? No, it’s a WIG-craft!

What are WIG-crafts?

WIG (Wing-In-Ground effect) crafts are advanced marine transportation vehicles that combine ship and aircraft features. They use the aerodynamic interaction between the wings and the surface to fly one to 20 meters above ground level. They are used most often for transport over water, as a high-speed alternative to boats. Compared to airplanes, they have the advantage of using a lot less fuel to cover the same distance.

“We’ve been walking through the same doors for nearly 10 years. With the

compatible nature of our technologies and logical opportunities for customer

sharing, why not walk through them together?” says Claude Sandroff, Director

Sales & Business Development for IPVS Barco.

That’s just what Barco and IP Video Systems (IPVS) have been doing since joining forces in January this year. Barco acquired IPVS of Silicon Valley, California, to grow its invest-ment in high-performance networked visu-alization technology. IPVS’ focus on real-time, high-definition media streaming, recording and management products offers the per-fect complement to Barco’s networked visu-alization solutions. Because both companies serve the same markets, IPVS and Barco can strengthen cross-divisional R&D resources to develop common, innovative technology platforms.

360° collaboration

By combining IPVS’ networking product port-folio with Barco’s high-resolution displays and software, the company can provide cost-effective, end-to-end solutions that enhance enterprise-wide information shar-ing. From broadcasting surgical cases in real time throughout the hospital, to facilitating inter-agency collaboration during a regional weather crisis, these newly bundled solu-tions fulfill the need for real-time wide area networking in mission-critical control rooms, digital operating suites, and military com-mand and control centers.

Making the ‘net’ work

IPVS also brings unique recording capabilities to control room and training environments for customers desiring to capture activities for analysis and debriefing purposes. One of the most promising areas for growth is in the field of virtual reality, where IPVS’ products enable remote sharing of immersive 3D vir-tual reality applications in real time over the IP network.

Comfortable in the hospital“JAOtech was one of the first bedside ter-minal suppliers,” Kressinger-Dunn continues. “Today, our installations are equipped with modern technologies that provide patients with access to TV, radio, music, games and the Internet to ease their stay. In addition, clinical staff use the terminals to deliver care more efficiently.”

Breaking old habitsToon Dierckx, Business Development Direc-tor Point of Care for Barco, adds: “Did you know nurses sometimes travel up to 5 miles on a work day and spend about one third of their time on paperwork? Imagine how it will be 10 years from now. The population is aging and more care is needed – but hos-pitals are short-staffed, so resources should not be wasted.”

Smarter nurses, happier patients“By using a smart card or RFID card at the bedside terminal, nurses and doctors have secure access to the Hospital Information System (HIS), a patient’s medical records (EMR) and much more. The terminal pro-vides them with real-time clinical infor-mation at the point of care, so they make more informed decisions, which significantly improves their workflow and increases pro-ductivity.”

Hospital-wide efficiency“Barco was very keen to join forces with JAOtech,” Toon continues. “We want to help clinical staff work smarter throughout the hospital. For that, we need to penetrate a wide range of healthcare segments. Today, we are leading the market in mammogra-phy, diagnostic and modality imaging. By teaming up with JAOtech, we can become a leading player in the patient point of care segment too.”

The JAOtech product range comprises bed-side smart terminals and smart healthcare TVs, point of care software and accessories, like mounting options and medical wireless keyboards. Today, over 55,000 bedside sys-tems have been installed in over 200 hospi-tals worldwide.

A 360° view for UK army fleet

Barco’s TX displays and networked visualization technology have been se-

lected for the British Army’s Scout Specialist Vehicle program. Scout SV is

a new armored vehicle, built on an open electronic architecture, and re-

places the British Army’s CVR(T) fleet. A panoramic view

The driver display features three 8” TX displays with a near-zero bezel and a wide video image in 3072 x 768 resolution. The triple head configuration offers a good all-around view of the driver’s surroundings, improving his local situational understanding.

Heat resistant, combat-proof

The vehicles also come with an extremely rugged 13” display, featuring 20 user-program-mable function keys and a unique thermal management system to withstand the harshest temperature environments.

Video over Ethernet

The displays are integrated with Barco’s sensor processing unit to process and ma-nipulate IP video streams. A 10 Gbps opti-cal network connection captures IP signals from cameras, sensors, and other IP-based devices and distributes the uncompressed IP streams to various operator positions in ac-cordance with the new Video-over-Ethernet standard (DEF STAN 00-82).

As 4K resolution, 3D sound and laser projection are on

the rise, the cinema world is rapidly changing. In par-

allel with these evolutions, there’s also another clear

trend: the push towards higher frame rates. We’ve listed

5 things you should know about this techno trend.

rate frenzy

1. Frame ratesexplainedFrame rates are the number of images dis-played by a projector in a single second. In today’s cinema world, feature films are being shot and played back at 24 fps. This means that every 1/24th of a second, a new image is projected onto the screen.

2. Speeding up‘Higher frame rates’ usually refer to speeds

of 48 fps or even 60 fps. Based on current camera and

post-production technology,

these higher frame rate speeds are

expected to be sufficient for

digital cinema projection for

the coming years.

3. Improved image quality Recording and playing movies at twice (or more) the rate of today’s standard will im-prove overall image quality, particularly on fast-moving scenes and camera pans, by reducing motion blur artifacts. And the effect will even be more apparent on 3D features. However, the transition to higher frame rates impacts the entire industry work-flow, from production, post-production and packaging, to distribution and exhibition. The industry – including DCI standards and SMPTE standards – needs to evolve into us-ing these higher frame rates.

4. More creative freedomObviously, it’s important that film studios shoot movies in these higher frame rates. If not, the higher frame rates do not impact image quality, because the projector will simply repeat certain frames to emulate the content’s lower frame rate. But as higher frame rates allow for a wider range of cam-era moves, they will expand the creative freedom of movie directors and open up

new possibilities in storytelling.

5. ‘The Hobbit’ So far, no feature film shot at higher frame rates has been released. But Peter Jackson is currently shooting ‘The Lord of the Rings’ pre-

quel ‘The Hobbit’ at 48 fps, and James Cameron

will shoot the sequels to Ava-tar in h igher f r a m e r a t e s . Accord-

The overall demand for surgery will increase rapidly in

the next few years, with an aging population and an increasing number

of lifestyle diseases. Meanwhile, there is a global shortage of healthcare workers and surgical facilities.

How will technology bridge the gap?

To handle the growing number of patients, hospitals are eager for solutions that help increase efficiency in the operating room. “To ensure the best collaboration between surgeons, nurses, and other clinical staff in a modern surgical environment, hospitals need a flexible solution to easily integrate surgical equipment and quickly adopt new technologies. That’s why we’ve de-veloped Nexxis digital OR,” explains Johan Stockman, VP Strategic Marketing Surgical Imaging.

Nexxis digital OR builds on the IP network to ensure complete integration. What is so unique about this ‘OR-over-IP’ approach?

Johan: There are several factors that make Nexxis truly unique. But its most important feature is the high bandwidth (10 Gbps) network backbone, which enables distribution of video, graphics, audio and computer data, without adding compression or latency.

In other words, Nexxis ensures artifact-free image display without delay, inside the operating room and even between multiple surgical suites. The benefits are obvious: Nexxis facilitates perfect hand-eye coordination during image-guided surgery and allows real-time com-munication with other operating rooms.

Today, many operating rooms use Audio Visual (AV) systems to integrate surgical devices. Why the need for an IP-based integration system?

Johan: Current AV systems require a great amount of cabling and com-plex configurations to ensure full integration. As imaging require-ments in the OR change regularly, clinicians should be able to meet these requirements quickly, without impacting workflow.Furthermore, with technologies and techniques for surgery evolving rapidly as well, hospitals need a scalable platform, which is not the case with currently available AV solutions.

Operating rooms packed with excessive cabling and surgical devices are a common scenario in hospitals worldwide. Is that healthy?

Johan: Not at all. That kind of environment impedes surgical efficiency and patient safety. With Nexxis, one universal network cable is all you need to distribute audio, video and data over the network. Imagine how that will help reduce cable clutter, not to mention installation cost. Clinical staff will now be able to plug in any device, even during surgery, without complicated configurations.

Additionally, Nexxis offers a set of tools to remotely monitor, troubleshoot and solve technical issues. This means technicians are able to set up the operating room and perform upgrades without entering the operating room.

Compared to AV systems, Nexxis digital OR offers a simple system architecture. How does it work?

Johan: Nexxis comes with highly compact adapters to encode and decode video,

data, and other information to and from IP streams. But the corner-

stone of the networked digital OR is the management soft-

ware, which sets up, man-ages and monitors the IP streams.

The software is integrat-ed within the user inter-face of the OR integrator, and allows distribution of information towards any destination with a single touch on the screen. This

improves communication and control in and beyond

Eventually, Nexxis digital OR will not only improve patient care, it might also

Choose the right partner One of those industry leaders was none other than IMAX Corporation. Like Barco, IMAX has established a reputation as a leading pro-vider of awe-inspiring, immersive cinema experiences. With IMAX’s premium screen platform and brand, and Barco’s technology leadership, a partnership between the two was a natural. The theaters will soon feature Barco’s state-of-the-art Xenon-based projec-tors, while the partners co-develop leading-edge laser technology using our unique laser innovations and IMAX’s licensed Kodak IP. The ultimate goal: to further differentiate and maximize the IMAX Experience®.

Give the people what they want

“What our customers want now more than anything else is brightness. That’s what improves the user experience right now in 3D,” said Todd Hoddick, VP Entertainment for Barco North America. “Laser, in particular, addresses the most important and frequent request we get: ‘Can you give us more light output?’ Judging from our recent demonstra-tions: ‘Yes, we can.’”

But what about the ultimate judges: the movie patrons? Perhaps legendary filmmaker and visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull sums it up best: “This is where we need to go as an industry to get people into theaters. The brightness, color gamut and saturation that Barco’s laser projector delivers are para-mount to achieving the ultimate production value.”

Barco and Baftaboth dedicated

to the art of the moving image

For over ten years now, the headquarters of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) have been fitted with state-of-the-art Barco equipment. The latest installation dates back to April 2011, when Barco set up its DP2K-32B

cinema projector at the iconic 227-seat Princess Anne Theatre.

BAFTA considers the new projector to be the jewel in the crown of a successful ten-year partnership. “As a venue closely connected with film technology and the film industry, it’s fantastic to work with Barco,” said Jenny Bones, Head of Commercial

Events. “They have proven to be consistently reliable over the years; they are forward-thinking and effective.”

Efficiency, flexibility, cost-effectiveness … and the death of TV

The future of networked visualizationOver the last 15 years, we’ve become accustomed to the freedom and flexibility net-

works offer. We share files among different sites of the enterprise – or with anyone

in the world – and it all feels ‘normal’. The AV world has been lagging somewhat

behind, but now all of the elements for a networked visualization revolution are

becoming available. Barco is pioneering this evolution, developing higher quality

systems that are more user-friendly and secure and easy to service.

Would anybody rewire their whole house to install a new

computer? Of course not, that’s absurd. But that is exactly

what the profes-sional AV world has

been do-ing. A lot

of systems still use a dedicated cabling system that is bound to be outdated in about five years.

The only logical thing to do is to stick with an established standard:

Ethernet. “People are usually thinking of the media layers when they talk

about standardization,” says Ronny Dewaele, Director

Technology Center at Barco. “But ideally,

you would have a totally common structure and only the ap-plication layer would depend on the manufacturer. For customers, this would be a lot more cost-effective.”

Bandwidth galore

‘Image quality’ is the most common excuse manufacturers use to not provide standard-

ized networked systems. And it’s true: dedi-cated AV systems can stream images without loss of quality, whereas today’s networked systems rely on compression. However, de-velopment in this area is exploding, and for a limited number of sources, uncompressed transport over IP networks is already possi-ble. In just a few years, we’ll have sufficient bandwidth to switch completely to uncom-pressed systems.

Where are we heading?

The new development in networked visuali-zation focuses on the customers. “What we are doing now is making networked systems more serviceable,” Ronny Dewaele contin-ues. “Installing and maintaining a system will become a lot easier: this means less configuration and more plug-and-play. All components – like cameras and displays – will have networking capabilities, allowing them to take care of the basic processing. More advanced capabilities will be handled by Network Services, so that introducing new intelligence will be as easy as plugging in a new device, instead of updating every component. In this set-up, fewer compo-nents are needed – resulting in significant cost-savings. Separation of responsibilities (that is, the strict separation of AV data from

other networked data) and enhanced secu-rity are other key development drivers.”

The death of TV as we know it

Having the networking capabilities built into the components means that television as we know it will fade out in a few years. TV sets will basically become computers, with a network connection that delivers content. This can be traditional television broadcasts, video-on-demand or other internet content. All peripherals, like set-top boxes and DVD/Blu-ray players, will essentially become ob-solete.

Pioneers

Barco is already at the forefront of the net-worked visualization revolution – TransForm N for Control Rooms and Nexxis, the digital operating room, are the best known solu-tions. Building on these two powerful prod-ucts, we are now developing a common platform that is valid for all markets. “The acquisition of IP Video Systems (IPVS) is an important accelerator for the development of this new framework,” says Ronny Dewaele.

“The advanced technology of this new mem-ber of the Barco family will be visible both in dedicated products (further development of IPVS’ current portfolio) and as an addition to the next-generation platform. This will help us stay ahead of the pack as we surprise the market with a system that is both highly advanced and very maintainable.”
