Small Animal Inhalation Anesthesia Incorporates Two Phases:

A) First Phase: Animal(s) are placed in the induction chamber where they are initially anesthetized with an exact

concentration of anesthetic - typically isoflurane.

B) Second Phase: Anesthetized animal is transferred from the induction chamber onto a surgical bed with a

breathing device and mask that supplies a constant flow of anesthetic gas to keep the animal safely anesthetized

during procedures.

Anatomy of an Anesthesia System 1) Oxygen Source that can be supplied from an in-house line or a tank. The oxygen functions as a carrier for the

anesthetic gas and serves as a blending agent to control the concentration of anesthetic.

2) Oxygen Regulator controls the pressure of oxygen from cylinder into the anesthesia machine.

3) Flowmeter 1 controls the flow rate of oxygen into the vaporizer.

4) Vaporizer precisely blends oxygen and the anesthetizing liquid to create an anesthetic gas at the exact

concentration level required.

5) Manifold distributes anesthetic gas to the induction chamber and the breather.

6) Flowmeter 2 controls the flow rate of the anesthetic gas output from the manifold to the induction chamber.

7) Induction Chamber facilitates initial anesthetizing of animal before placing on surgical bed for procedure.

8) Oxygen Flush purges the induction chamber of anesthetic gas to ensure that no anesthetic is released into the

room when transferring animals from the chamber to the surgical bed.

9) Breather delivers precisely controlled anesthetic gas to the animal.

10) Nosecone provides a secure fit for the delivery of anesthetic gas from the breather to the animal and minimizes gas

seepage into the room.

11) Surgical Bed acts as a stable surface for procedures and may be water-heated for precise control of body temperature

during procedures.

12) Water Heating Pump provides precisely controlled, circulating heated water to the surgical bed and the

induction chamber warmer.

13) Charcoal Filter Canister captures anesthetic gas from all components preventing escape of gas into the room.

Expert Spotlight - HeatWhy do I need heat during the anesthesia process?Anesthesia inhibits the body’s ability to maintain normal internal temperature. For this reason temperature regulation is important for any procedure. Warming during anesthesia has been shown to improve patient outcomes, reduce complications, and speed recovery time. Warming via water circulation is a safe and gentle method of patient warming that has been successfully used for decades. Homeothermic heating with an electronic controller is ideal when maintenance of internal temperature is critical to the outcome of your procedure. (see p.18-19)

TEC 3 VaporizersThe vaporizer is a precision instrument that is anesthetic agent specific and is available in a variety of sizes, such as TEC 3, TEC

4, and TEC 5. Most commonly, the TEC 3 isoflurane vaporizer is used with small animals. The vaporizer blends incoming oxygen

with liquid isoflurane and outputs anesthetic gas at the set oxygen to isoflurane ratio. The dial setting allows fine gradations for

precise isoflurane concentration. The vaporizer is available in multiple configurations that incorporate output to an anesthesia

system or as a stand-alone unit. The Classic and the Single Animal machines are also available without a vaporizer, allowing you

to incorporate your own vaporizer.

ensuring a tight fit and minimal dead space. They are available

in three sizes to fit mice, rats, and rabbits. Nosecones include

rubber plugs to close off gas supply when not in use. Nosecone

Long term exposure to excessive anesthetic gas can be harmful to personnel. When used

properly, the E-Z Anesthesia evacuation products and techniques will effectively reduce

exposure to waste gas.

Expert Spotlight - Cylinder ConnectionsHow do I know which oxygen regulator to select?Oxygen cylinders are available with two different styles of connection in the US. Knowing which connection you have is key to selecting the proper regulator. The CGA-540 is the most common style and can be found on many cylinder sizes, usually the ‘H’ or M250 size. This connection requires an EZ-320 regulator. The CGA-870 is a “pin and yoke” style connection and is found most often with small, portable ‘E’ or M24 size tanks. This connection requires an EZ-330 regulator. ‘H’ size tanks are recommended for stationary systems, while ‘E’ size tanks are recommended for all mobility options.

High Capacity Triple Chamber System


The staff at E-Z Systems® has enjoyed a long standing partnership with researchers and investigators. We continually use this experience to develop solutions for your custom anesthesia needs.

Reseachers at a US federal government agency were running an experiment that required up to 12 rats to be anesthetized for long periods in individual chambers. The experiment also required a control group of rats to be exposed to medical air. The number of chambers receiving anesthetic or air would change from time to time. E-Z Systems was able to build a modular system that allowed researchers to quickly select up to 12 chambers to receive air or anesthetic gas. Since the experiment specified exact anesthetic concentrations, an anesthetic analyzer was integrated between the vaporizer and the chambers.

A prominent research hospital in Montreal, Canada was building a new site with extensive animal research capabilities. For its new facility, the hospital wanted high quality anesthesia equipment built to their exact needs. Working closely with the hospital, E-Z Systems custom-designed two anesthesia machines to their precise specifications, including a unit that integrated directly into stainless steel casework in two procedure rooms. A total of 34 anesthesia systems were installed.
