Established in 1920, the Hoge-Warren-Zimmermann Company (HWZ) began asa specialty subcontractor installing gypsumroof decks, a novel new fireproof methodof building a roofing substrate. E. ClydeHoge was co-founder and patent holderof this novel new method of construction.

Use of the gypsum roof deck grew steadilyduring the 1930s and 1940s, and the1950s was marked by much innovation bythe company’s design engineers who wereon the cutting edge in new development.

In the following years, strategic acquisitionsmade the company even stronger. Theacquisition of Busse Acoustical in 1968eventually resulted in our Central AcousticalSupply House (C.A.S.H.) distribution division. Although C.A.S.H.’s initial focuswas on the acoustical market, productlines were broadened to include drywalland related products, insulations, EIFSsystems and specialty products.

During the 1990s we enhanced our distribution business with strategic acquisitions that expanded our marketingarea and product lines.

We want to bring you up to date on thecurrent and future status of moisture-resistant drywall, sometimes referred to as MR Board, WR Board or Green Board.

In 2006, the International Code Council(ICC) voted to disallow the use of GreenBoard as a tile backer product in wetareas including showers and baths. However, the product is still allowed as a tile backer in non-wet areas such asbacksplashes.

Meanwhile, in response to mold andmildew issues affecting gypsum wallboard, the gypsum wallboard manufacturers have introduced newproducts meant to combat moisture, mold and mildew. They not only protect against incidental moisture, butalso provide protection against mold andmildew. These new products include XPproducts from National Gypsum andMold Tough products from USG.

The new mold- and mildew-resistantproducts can be used as a tile backer the same as Green Board under the new code, but like Green Board, theycannot be used as a tile backer in wetareas. They can only be used as a tilebacker in non-wet areas. These newmold- and mildew-resistant productsoffer an improvement over Green Board, and therefore Green Board is no longer needed.

For a tile backer product in tub andshower areas, the building code onlyallows cement board products (i.e.Durock and PermaBase), fiber cementboard (i.e. HardieBacker), glass-matfaced boards (i.e. DensShield), andgypsum fiber panels (i.e. Fiberock). For a tile backer in areas subject toconstant, excessive moisture andhumidity such as gang showers, saunas, steam rooms, and swimmingpools, the only approved products arecement board products (i.e. Durock and PermaBase).

Due to these changes, some manufactur-ers are discontinuing the production ofGreen Board, effective June 15, 2007.NexGen Building Supply will do everythingpossible to keep Green Board productsin stock. However, due to decreased production, availability may be limited.

We suggest contacting your customersand informing them of these changes assoon as possible to minimize problemson jobs. If we can provide any additionalinformation for you or your customers, please don’t hesitate to ask.

When sound transmission is a concernfor multi-unit or multi-use buildings, youneed a high-quality acoustical drywall. For use as single-layer application or as acomponent of multi-layered wall assemblies,Gold Bond® BRAND SoundBreak™Gypsum Board is your silent solution.

According to National Gypsum, manufacturers of SoundBreak GypsumBoard, acousticallyenhanced gypsum boardis used in the constructionof high rated STC wallassemblies. This 5/8" thickgypsum board consists of a layer of viscoelasticdamping polymer sandwiched between twopieces of enhanced highdensity mold resistant gypsum board, providingconstrained layer damping.

At NexGen, we recommendSoundBreak GypsumBoard because it offers superior sounddamping in a cost efficient material thatis easily finished and decorated in thesame manner as regular gypsum board. In addition, all SoundBreak GypsumBoard designs were tested by an independent third-party acoustical laboratory using the full scale ASTM E90 test procedure.

Other product benefits include: • GridMarX® guide marks printed on the

paper surface for speedy installation.

But, we don’t stop there. We stronglybelieve that your success is our success. Therefore, we are very interested inexploring other ways to serve you better. Some of the areas that we are looking intoinclude, but are not limited to: hands-onproduct training; safety programdevelopment and training; project estimating

and financial management seminars.

• Reliable and less complicated installation than alternative methodsrequiring clips and/or channels.

• Easy to trim by scoring deeply from both sides of the board before

snapping, or with the use of a hand or power saw.

• Wall partitions with high-rated STC values that are thinner than traditionallybuilt high-rated STC wall partitions, providing increased useable floor space.

• Can be used as an additional layer on one or both sides of fire-rated wall assemblies (i.e., U300, U400 and V400series designs). SoundBreak Gypsum Board cannot be used as a substitute

for 5/8" Type X gypsum board in a fire-rated assembly.

• Provides extra protection against mold and mildew compared to standard wallboard products.
