TOTAL COST OF OWNERSHIP

The physical cabling infrastructure plays a critical role in key networking issues which have an impact on business performance. Investing in the right solution and partner is not only an issue to consider during installation, but the consequences will have a significant impact on the end user’s cost of ownership.

It is vital to plan for a cabling system that can support several generations of active equipment.

Meeting Higher Bandwidth Needs • 10G in office • 25G and 40G in data center • Migration paths

Enabling Sustainability • Higher grade cabling • Design flexibility • Product Environmental Profile (PEP) • Health Product Clarification (HPD)

Anticipating Technology Change • Convergence • Virtualization •Power over Ethernet (PoE)

Improving Network Reliability • Quality products • Converged Application (CA) score • Enhanced performance

Bandwidth DemandPlanning a Smart Migration Path

“By 2021, the gigabyte equivalent of all movies ever made will cross The Internet every minute.”

- Cisco

The global rate of growth of data is almost beyond comprehension. In 2010, 1,000 Exabytes of data (equivalent to around 250 billion DVDs) was produced; 75 percent by individuals and 25 percent by machines. The data produced by devices is set to increase due to the Internet of Things (IoT), as more and more devices will be connected to the Internet. In total, around 35 Zettabytes of data will be produced by 2020.

ReliabilityEnhanced Performance for Converged Applications

“The ability to control change is without doubt the major contributor to business value.”

- British Computer Society (BCS)

Network reliability issues and system performance issues can result in lengthy downtime and damage both business operations and reputation. Reliability can be improved by adopting high-quality products that are designed to create a system that can handle the demands of today’s information intensive businesses.

2

Technology ChangeAnticipating & Managing IT Evolution

“Significant innovation continues in the field of IT driven by volume, velocity and variety of information.” - IDC

Network cabling, whether in the office or data center, has to be flexible to support changing technology trends:

• Virtualization • Cloud • Top of rack or end of row • Convergence • Data center Ethernet

The choice of cabling will impact cost of ownership.

SustainabilityCabling Selection Will Impact Energy Consumption

“By 2020 IT will be more polluting than aviation.” - The Economist

Increased demand for power caused by accelerating IT growth creates direct conflict for IT managers as environmental regulation intensifies and energy costs increase. The need to plan data center infrastructure to ensure that it is best equipped to maximize efficiency and reduce total cost of ownership has never been greater.

3

Not Just Data…Also Power!Power over Ethernet, especially next generation High Power PoE, is a key driver for the adoption of IP convergence, reducing the need for separate power cabling, saving installation costs and limiting administration overhead. Remote powering of devices will increase the temperature in cabling bundles. High performance shielded cabling and cables with metallic crosstalk barriers will allow larger bundle sizes, while keeping temperatures within the listed rating.

Studies have been made on the heating effect power delivery has on cables; however component standards for connectors do not include PoE+ compliance – which means customers need to ensure that they specify “PoE-ready-connectors.”

Additionally, there is a clear trend towards powering devices which draw up to 100W, which means minimum PoE+ compliance (i.e. Cat 5e) is not good enough. The support of higher power delivery requires good cabling design and higher grade of cabling, including “PoE-ready-connectors.”

Horizontal Cabling

a) A Performance Level for Every Application

By horizontal cabling, we mean the cabling which connects the floor distributor to the outlets at the workplace. This is usually done with a 4-pair copper cable. Nexans offer a full range of copper solutions which exceed the requirements of standard categories.

b) Guarantees of Distances Covered

The standards (ISO/IEC, EN and EIA/TIA) are based around a maximum channel length of 100m. In the event of a request for a specific “application guarantee”, Nexans provides cover for the longest channels according to the type of application. This provision only applies when Nexans products are used exclusively along the channel in question.

CATEGORIES AND PERFORMANCE

In an implementation of generic cabling, one assembly of TOs directly linked back to the Floor Distributor (also known as a Distributor room) serves a single work area.

PERMANENT LINK TESTING VS. CHANNEL TESTING

8

In the TIA standards two different ways of testing are described.

A permanent link is the fixed part of the cabling, which is normally tested after installation. These test results give information on installation quality. The permanent link extends from the patch panel in the cabinet to the telecommunications outlet at the user side. It excludes work area cords, equipment cords and cross-connections, but does include the optional consolidation point.

A channel represents the complete end-to-end path between the user equipment (PC, phone, video, printer, etc.) and the active equipment at the cabinet side (switch, hub, PBX, video equipment). The channel includes the work area cord, the equipment cord and the cross-connection.

In an open office environment the work areas regularly need to be reconfigured. As a consequence the installation of a Consolidation Point between the FD and the outlet (TO) can be useful in order to provide flexibility of reallocating the TOs. The CP (Zone Distribution box) is located in the space above the ceiling or under the raised floor.

This last configuration includes both CP and presentation panel. It is the worst case scenario regarding data transmission performance as there are four RJ45 jack/plug connections in the link.

All LANmark systems are warranted to exceed the standard electrical parameters when using the worst case 4 connector channel scenario.

Presentation panels (also called representation panels or mirror panels) are used where horizontal distribution patch panels are located away from active equipment. They can also be used to protect switch ports from wear and tear.

All switch ports are permanently connected to a presentation panel and the connection with the horizontal panel is performed between the presentation and the horizontal panel to create a cross-connect area.

Converged Application ScoreTo accommodate bandwidth expansion you need cabling that offers the ideal balance between delivering data AND power. This requires a new way of testing and evaluating cabling performance. Nexans’ Converged Applications (CA) score defines how the cabling network’s performance will affect the user’s experience. Using realistic test scenarios, it measures how network infrastructure will perform against future demand and converging applications. The CA score is an indicator of IP traffic protection as it is related to cabling system performance.

Unlike traditional methods that measure a channel’s frequency response in decibels (dBs) and reports a pass/fail result, Nexans conducts much more rigorous testing with real world applications and the results show how well the equipment and business systems that are running on the cabling system will function – or not. The testing is conducted on a channel that is exposed to electrical fast transient (EFT) voltage spikes from adjacent power cabling with 75m exposed to increased temperatures while IP video, VoIP traffic, and high Power over Ethernet are transmitted simultaneously. Empirical testing on these channels includes: • Mean Opinion Score (MOS) – A quality of service metric used to measure VoIP • Frame Error Rate (FER) – A measurement of the integrity of IP data transmission • Media Loss Rate (MLR) – A quality of service metric used mainly to measure IP video • Heat Rise from PoE – A measurement of how efficiently the cabling dissipates heat

Nexans feeds these test results into an algorithm that incorporates total channel bandwidth as well as Signal to Noise Ratio values and reach capability for 1, 2.5, 5, and 10 Gbps Ethernet. The output is the Converged Application score for each channel tested in a range between 1 and 20.

The better IP traffic is protected from the stress of multiple simultaneous applications, noise, and heat, the higher the score. In short, the Nexans CA score is an indicator of the user experience based on real world applications and environmental conditions.

LANMARK-6A FTP SYSTEM

The Nexans LANmark-6A FTP cabling system is the ideal solution for enterprise and data center environments, offering guaranteed bandwidth to 500 MHz and supporting 10GBASE-T, the highest performing application available today over horizontal copper cabling.

LANmark-6A FTP cables and connectivity are manufactured and tested to the latest Cat 6A specifications defined in the International, European and American cable and cabling standards, including ISO 11801, EN 50173-1 and TIA-568-C.2.

The LANmark-6A FTP range supports up to three connection points within a 10m link or a 12m channel. This makes it an ideal solution for modern data centers that are already facing severe space problems and where overlength cable is often installed in order to comply with a traditional minimum channel length of 24m. By reducing this minimum length, data centers no longer need to install unnecessary excess cable, therefore reducing costs while also saving critical space.

Proper cable shielding eliminates interference from adjacent cables and other noise sources. Shielded cables also dissipate heat from high power PoE much more efficiently than UTP cables, which allows larger bundles in cable channels. This contributes to lower installation costs. Shielded systems provide significant headroom to ANEXT, as well as a high degree of overall noise immunity.

Guaranteed superior channel headroom for : •NEXT (4dB) •Return loss (4dB) •Alien crosstalk (6.5dB) (no expensive ANEXT testing required) •No * passes •Ability to install very short links

LANmark-6A FTP Cable • Ideal cable for 10GBASE-T applications • Full compliance to latest standards for Cat 6A and Class EA • Guaranteed performance up to 500MHz • Outstanding signal isolation • Superior alien crosstalk performance • ROHS compliant

LANmark-IP •Ideal for high PoE, low bandwidth applications •22 AWG, all FEP insulated conductors •90°C temperature listing •Small OD size of 0.24in •No center filler •Guaranteed performance up to 250 MHz •44% cooler under 4PPoe vs. traditional Category 5e or 6 •88% power efficiency for reduced energy costs

LANmark-IP is the ideal solution for high-power, low bandwidth applications such as PoE-powered IP lighting.

Unlike high-bandwidth applications such as wireless access points and HD video, which require a 10 Gbps connection to operate at top performance, IP lighting operates very effectively over a 1 Gbps network. However, typical 1 Gbps cabling can’t efficiently overcome the main challenge associated with PoE – high power (60W and 100W) and the heat rise that comes with it. Excessive heat rise can interfere with IP traffic, resulting in transmission errors and an underperforming network.

LANmark-IP more effectively manages the heat generated by high-power PoE because it is specially constructed with 22AWG conductors and all-FEP insulation. In TEK Center testing, LANmark-IP generated 44% less heat rise than traditional Category 5e cabling (based on 192-cable bundles with all cables energized to 100W). Less heat rise means less cooling will be required, which can contribute to energy cost savings. Additionally, LANmark-IP has a temperature rating of 90°C, making it suitable for even the hottest plenum spaces.

LANmark-IP is also more energy efficient than traditional Category 5e and Category 6 cables. LANmark-IP is 88% efficient, which means that 88% of the power transmitted by the Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) will reach the powered device (PD). Category 5e and standard Category 6 cables range from 55-68% efficiency, depending on conductor size.
