One of the most com-mon problems home-owners face when

confronting a remodeling proj-ect is fear of the unknown. Many have heard from relativesand friends about their horribleexperiences with the construction indus-try. We’ve all heard stories about contrac-tors who started a job and didn’t finish;who skimped on building materials; orwho took money and were never seenfrom again.

There are too many people in theremodeling business who are bestdescribed as “fly by night” firms. They aredishonest and make no attempt to beupfront with consumers. Worse, they oper-ate without a proper license or insurance.

Fortunately, homeowners can turn tothe New York City/Long Island Chapterof the National Association for theRemodeling Industry (NARI). NARI’smain purpose is to promote professional-ism in the industry. Professionalism in theway its members deal with homeowners, suppliers and tradesmen.

When you deal with a member of theNYC/LI Chapter of NARI, you are deal-ing with someone dedicated to quality

workmanship, consumer satis-faction and a Code of Ethics(see page 8) they apply in all oftheir business dealings.

NARI members are alsocommitted to staying abreast ofthe latest building techniques

through the ongoing education providedby NARI’s different industry certificationprograms (see page 12). In addition, theirwork will encompass the newest trends inremodeling.

Importantly, every member of NARIlisted in this publication is an insured andlicensed company you can trust to assistyou with your next home renovation.

Members of the NYC/LI Chapter ofNARI are the best of the best. Some ofthem can be found on display in the pagesof this magazine. To talk to a NARImember about your next project, checkout the Membership Directory beginningon page 50 or visit www.nari-ny.org.

Patrick Bentivegna, started Benco Construction over a decade ago with one idea in mind: Expand upon time-tested techniques and industry standards with innovative ideas

and excellence in craftsmanship. Through diligence and raw talent, Patrick now enjoys a secure position amongst Long Island’smost respected General Contractors and holds a CR (CertifiedRemodeler) Certification from the NARI NYC/LI Chapter.

The idea behind Benco Construction is relatively simple: First, observe the beautiful landscapes of Long Island, and then conceptualize the perfect complimentary, non-invasivedesign strategy. Next, during construction, the techniques of old-world craftsmanship are applied and combined with new-world ideas to produce stunning, functional spaces which are much more than just eye candy to the casual spectator.Patrick’s trademark style is born of meticulous attention to detail coupled with an intrinsic sense of what works.

In general, you could say that a hands-on approach throughoutevery phase of the project and a long established history of qualityis what sets Benco apart from the rest. When asked why peopleuse Benco Construction, the answer which comes immediately tomind is, “Communication.” Open communication is a must forPatrick, and in addition to being on-site during the constructionprocess, he is directly available to his clients all of the time.

“My wife Jen and I have been blessed to live in our new home for 5 years, built by Benco Construction. In the planning stages of thebuilding process, we chose him as the builder of our home, and duringthe process we developed a respect and trust for you and your expert-ise. Today, the superb workmanship speaks for itself. We are verypleased. He used the online system to show me the progress of myhome, and help me keep all my communication, pictures, and selec-tion in one easy location that I could access any time. The finishedproduct was fabulous. We love our home!” - Edward & Jen Anders

With the winter season approach-ing, it is time for homeownersto deal with any outstanding

household maintenance projects. The fallis a great time to get those projects com-pleted because many contractors haveshorter lead-times during this time of year. Not only is the scheduling time shorter, but, for many contractors, the busy seasonis slowing down and he or she will havemore time to devote to your project.

Here is a “Top Ten List” of projectshomeowners might consider completingbefore the winter sets in:

• Kitchen & Bath RemodelingBecause the kids are back in school, amajor remodel at this time of year is less disruptive to the family. A one-roomproject can easily be finished before theholiday season arrives.• Roof Repair/ReplacementBe proactive and prevent expensive repairs.Find out about common trouble spots andask your contractor how you can locate aleak from inside.

On May 17, 2010, 15-year-oldAndrew Rosa was riding his bikehome when tragedy struck.

Andrew was hit by a motorist near hishome, resulting in severe Traumatic BrainInjury and multiple bone fractures. Sincethe accident, he has undergone multiplebrain surgeries and is still struggling torecover. As a result, Andrew requiresaround-the-clock nursing care at St. Mary’sChildren’s Hospital, in Bayside, NY.

Like any parents, the Rosas wanted tobring their son home. In order to makethis happen, certain major modificationsneeded to be made to their home toaccommodate Andrew and his medicalequipment. They also needed a customhandicap van to be able to transport himto doctor appointments and therapy.

When the members of NARI's LongIsland chapter caught wind of the predica-ment the Rosas were in, they knew that ifthey came together as a group, they'd beable to make the Rosa’s dream of bringingAndrew home come true.

After careful planning and roundingup some crews, the members of NARIstarted Operation Bring Andrew Home! With help from the Rosa family, themembers of NARI carefully and strategi-cally came up with a plan to make theRosa's home not only able to accommo-date Andrew and his medical equipment, but also a live in nurse.

In July and August of 2011, the mem-bers of NARI's NYC/LI chapter put ontheir tool belts, grabbed their hammersand nails, and got to work on this gratify-ing project. The turnout of volunteers wasunreal; so unreal that the project was a fewdays ahead of schedule. With expecta-tions to do the roof in days to come, thevolunteers were ready for the roof crewsooner than anticipated. NARI President,Bob Diddier did what he could to make asecond miracle happen by getting a roofcrew to the jobsite almost immediately.

Marcor Roofing & Construction camethrough in a pinch and within an hour hadcrews roofing Andrew's new home with the materials donated by FlorenceBuilding Supply. Every year, motor vehicle acci-dents are one of the leadingcauses of fatalities in the United

States. Most of us drive to and fromwork every day. Some of us spend thebulk of our work day on the road, sometimes transporting heavy toolsand materials. Often, we are workingon a tight schedule, trying to make it tothe next job site or appointment whilefollowing a navigation system or mapthrough what may be unfamiliar terri-tories, while our PDA is receiving anemail or our cell phone just won't stopringing.

Just remember that in a matter of sec-onds, the slightest wrong move couldchange a person or family's life foreveras it did the Rosa's. So next time you are running late, rushing to your nextappointment, or your cell phone justwon't stop ringing, think of AndrewRosa. Pull over and let your customerknow you're running a few minutes lateor let your phone call go to voicemail. Most importantly, have respect for theroad. Remodeling your house is a greatway to get the home of yourdreams and to increase the value

of your single largest asset. Before thework begins, however, it is important tolay the groundwork for success. Here arefive tips for a successful project.

SELECT THE RIGHT CONTRACTORThe single most important step in anysuccessful remodeling project is hiringthe right contractor. It doesn’t have to bedifficult, but you do need to do yourhomework.

Basic requirements include findingsomeone with a track record of success inyour community and making sure the con-tractor you hire is properly licensed andinsured. Membership in a trade organiza-tion like the National Association for theRemodeling Industry (NARI) means thecontractor is informed about the latestproducts, construction techniques andindustry issues.

The best way to find a qualified remod-eler is to be referred by someone who hasjust had a successful project completedby that firm. Talk to your relatives, friends, neighbors and coworkers whohave had recent remodeling done.

“You want to be referred to a contrac-tor who does the same type of work youare looking to have done,” says KevinWrynn, CR, of Kevin Wrynn Carpentry(a past president of the NYC/LI Chapterof NARI). “If you are doing a kitchenproject, you want a referral from some-one who had their kitchen done.”

“Additionally, do not just ask the con-tractor for references, make sure you callthem,” he says. “Find out how thoseprojects went. One question that mightgive you an insight into possible issues is:‘If you had one thing you could changeabout your remodeling experience, whatwould it be?’”

Finally, interview your candidates. The contractor you hire needs to besomeone you can communicate with andsomeone you trust. Remember, you andyour remodeler are tackling your projecttogether. It is critical that you hire a con-tractor as committed to the success ofyour project as you are.

SET A BUDGETEstablish a firm budget for your remodel-ing project. You don’t want to end upshort on cash and not be able to finishyour project, nor do you want to end updeeply in debt. Work with your contrac-tor to get the most for your hard-earneddollar. He or she should have a generalidea of how much you are willing toinvest in the project and can help you staywithin that budget.

Remember, changes are costly. Theworst remodeling mistake many home-owners make is to wait until the con-struction process has begun and thenstart changing their minds. They want adifferent design, a different product or toadd something altogether new to the ren-ovation. To make the most of your budg-et, the time to explore and make changesis during the planning stage.

It’s a good idea to keep 10 to 20 per-cent of your budget in reserve for anyunexpected expenses. Unforeseen costswill inevitably arise and you don’t wantto be unprepared.

CREATE A REALISTIC TIMELINETiming is critical when planning a homeimprovement project. Be sure to select astart date and an approximate finish datethat best fits into you and your contrac-tor’s schedules.

Be realistic. If you are remodeling yourkitchen and jobs similar in scope typical-ly take six weeks to complete, don’texpect yours to be done in three. Andmake sure to factor material deliverytimes into your schedule.

Before work begins, ask your contrac-tor what inconveniences may occur andplan for them. Take into account any spe-cial events so that you and/or yourremodeler can plan accordingly. Propertiming of your job can go a long waytowards reducing stress levels and mak-ing your project run smoothly.

CONSIDER PERSONAL SATISFACTIONVERSUS RETURN ON INVESTMENTThe primary reason for remodeling anexisting house is to get the home youwant. A remodel should, however, properly position your home in your

neighborhood from a value standpoint. You don’t want to overbuild becauseyou might not be able to realize theincreased value if you need to sell thehome, but you don’t want to underbuild either.

“Consider how long you are going tobe living in the home,” advises Wrynn.“If you plan on selling in a year or two,you probably do not want to invest a lotof money. On the other hand, if you donot plan on moving, it makes sense to getthe house you want so you can enjoy it,”he says. “A well done renovation that istaken care of will usually retain a goodportion of its value if you decide to sellyour home later.”

Remodeling lets you invest in yourexisting asset and increase its value.Generally speaking, the remodeling proj-ects with the best return on investmentinclude kitchen and bathroom remodels, additions and cosmetic changes (a newroof, paint or carpeting).

PUT IT IN WRITINGA well written contract spells out whatthe homeowner is getting from the con-tractor. It should include a comprehen-sive description of the project, a payment

schedule, a timetable, and the types ofproducts/materials that will be used. Theresponsibilities of the contractor and anysubcontractors should be described indetail.

“Make sure everything you discuss withyour contractor makes it into the con-tract,” emphasizes Wrynn. “In doing so,you leave no room for error later.”

A contract should also list provisionsfor warranties, changes in proceduresand, in case a conflict arises, alternativedispute resolution clauses.

Review the contract thoroughly andonly sign it once all your questions havebeen answered. And always be sure tokeep a copy of the final document foryour records. Once the ink is dry, you areready to turn the remodeling ideas you’vebeen dreaming about into reality.

Over the years I have heard somany stories of disaster and neardisaster resulting from people lis-

tening to and taking advice from thewrong people.

We all seek advice from time to time, but we are often as disappointed as weare satisfied with the advice we get.Sometimes it is a matter of the blindleading the blind as the old saying goes, and sometimes we find we actually gainsome real nuggets of wisdom. So what isthe difference, and when do you knowthat you are getting help instead of moreconfusion regarding your situation?

There are as many ways that you can behelped by others as there are ways that youcan be hurt. Of course we could reversethat statement and focus on the ways you

can be hurt. But instead let’s look at theimportant elements needed in seeking help.

One of the frustrating things I often seeis the person who asks everyone for theiropinion. This can be dangerous for a num-ber of reasons. The biggest problem withasking too many people is that most ofthem will not be qualified to give yousound advice.

Part of this “disqualification” is that theymost likely don’t have all the facts, or theydon’t have the necessary experience in thearea, or they don’t have the time and atten-tion to put into helping you with your ques-tions. Part of not having the experience isthat these individuals may be very fixedinto their way of doing or thinking aboutsomething. And, quite frankly, they eithercan’t or won’t look at the big picture.

Unless you are dealing with a profes-sional in the area, it is rare to find some-one who will have the necessary time orenergy to put into helping you solve yourproblems. As a result you will more like-ly get an offhand answer or opinion. Thatis not to say that the advisor is trying tohurt you, most likely they aren’t, but keepin mind that you could have come upwith the same answer yourself.

Although your family, friends andneighbors usually mean well, they areoften just not equipped to assist in cer-tain decisions. Unfortunately althougheveryone has their own ideas or opin-ions about certain subjects, they usuallydon’t have all the facts, knowledge orexperience needed for sound decisionmaking.

Although this is true in a lot of areas oflife, it is especially true when it involvesany decisions or plans requiring profes-sional expertise. We have all heard aboutthe arm chair attorney, accountant ordoctor, but too many of us ignore theimportance of seeking professionaladvice for the many improvements possi-ble for our homes.

The various professionals who canand will assist us in improving ourhomes include architects, designers, builders, remodelers and landscapeprofessionals. To ensure that the systems in our homes are kept safe andin good condition there are many service professionals including plumb-ing and heating specialists, electricians, and those who service our appliancesand any other systems we have in our homes.

Whether we need the services of anarchitect, a designer, a builder, a remod-eler or a service contractor, we are saferto use the expertise of a professionalrather than that of a well-meaning, butuninformed friend.

When it comes to trying somethingnew, most of your friends or other casualadvisors won’t really know how it willwork. Again they will probably advise

Many of our projects are referred to us by people who did NOT chooseour company,” says Joanne Bechhoff, vice president of G.B.Construction & Development. “One couple doing a complete remodel

chose our competitor because: 1) his price was considerably lower, and 2) He toldthem that the work we said needed to be done was not necessary and, 3) Theycould remain in the house during construction. His inexperience cost them morethan what we had priced the project for. Not only did they have to move out, it costthem double! Since that fiasco, we have remodeled their children’s home and con-tinue to receive referrals from both families.”

The Wrong Choice - The Wrong ReasonBy Joanne Bechhoff

you to not go ahead. This unfortunatelylimits creativity and progress. And ofcourse, you will never know if the newidea would have worked.

When it comes to getting professionaladvice, it is critical that you let youradviser know all the facts of the situa-tion; otherwise even the professionalmight lead you astray. Of course, any-one who is a real professional shouldstrive to get all the relevant data beforegiving their opinion. Unfortunately Ihave seen too many cases of that nothappening. What I often see is the casu-al advisor looking only at one aspect ofthe total picture. Unfortunately thataspect is often the price. All too oftenpeople end up choosing the “low bid-der” and are usually sorry afterwards.

There are just too many instances ofunprofessional contractors giving low-ball pricing and then cutting corners tomake up the difference.

Recently a client told me about aprospect deciding not to use his servicesbecause the prospect’s financial advisorsaid to go with the “low bidder”. As weall know, that is a recipe for disaster anda prime example of not looking at allthe facts.

Although it is important that we ulti-mately make our own decisions, we allrecognize that there will be times thatwe may want to seek outside help. Indoing so, there will often be conflictingopinions, so it will be important thatyou make sure all the data is availableto anyone you consult and that you ulti-

mately make your own decisions. Whenit comes to prospective clients seekingadvice, the best you can do for them isto ensure that their advisers are alsofully informed.

When you choose a contractorfor your remodeling project, you are selecting a partner

with whom you will work for at least thenext several months. So it pays to do athorough search to find the right personfor the job. In fact, the success of yourremodel depends on you and your con-tractor being able to communicate, worktogether, and trust each other.

To help you select the right contractingfirm for your next project, four veterancontractors—totaling over 100 years ofcombined remodeling experience—satdown to offer you these tips. They are:Kent Buell, MCR, CKBR and Presidentof Kentstruction; Doug Dervin, CR,CLC and President of Double DContractors; Art Donnelly, MCR, CR,

CKBR and President of Legacy Builders& Remodelers Corp.; and Charlie Testa,CKD, CBD and President of IslandKitchens and Baths.

“Finding the right contractor doesn’thave to be difficult,” says Doug Dervin.“But homeowners do need to do theirhomework. Take your time, conduct athorough search and ask the right ques-tions,” he says.

BASIC “MUST HAVE” REQUIREMENTSLook for a contractor who has an estab-lished business. A business that has beenaround for a period of time will have atrack record of success that you canreview.

“Check to be sure the contractor youhire is properly licensed,” advises Kent

Buell. “In fact, be sure you physically seethe license, as well as the firm’s work-man’s compensation and liability insur-ance.

“It’s also a good idea to check with theDepartment of Consumer Affairs tomake sure there are not an overabun-dance of complaints against the contrac-tor you are considering,” adds Buell.

PROFESSIONAL TRADE ORGANIZATIONSProfessional trade organizations like theNational Association for the RemodelingIndustry (NARI) are great sources forfinding high-quality contractors. Buell,Dervin, Donnelly, and Testa are all mem-bers of the NYC/LI Chapter of NARI.

“NARI is the best place to look forqualified remodeling contractors,” saysDonnelly. “NARI members are commit-ted not only to doing quality work, butalso to observing ethical business prac-tices and advancing their profession.”

“NARI keeps us abreast of the latestinformation concerning new buildingtechniques, products, and materials,”says Testa. “NARI keeps us up-to-date ina changing industry and the end result isa better product for our customers.”

“A person who belongs to a trade asso-ciation and is willing to pay the yearlydues and attend the meetings is usuallysomeone interested in his or her businessand wants to improve themselves,” Buellsays.

QUALIFIED REFERRALSOne of the best ways for a homeowner tofind a qualified remodeler is via a refer-ral. According to NARI, nearly 75% ofall remodeling jobs handled by contrac-tors start out as referrals.

“There are two aspects to every goodreferral,” says Dervin. “First, it shouldcome from a previously satisfied cus-tomer or the contractor. Second, youwant to be referred to a contractor whodoes the type of work you want done.”

“If you want to add a deck and yourneighbors just had their kitchen remodeled,

their contractor might not be the one you are looking for,” says Donnelly. “Youwant to hire someone who has experiencebuilding decks and brings those specialskills to your project.”

Some questions you should be askingyour contractor are:• How long have you been in business?• Who will be assigned as a project supervisor

for my remodel?• What is the time frame for starting

my project?• What is our approach to a project of

this scope?• Do you have employees or do you use

subcontractors?• Is your company a full-service or

specialty contractor?• Do you have design services available?• How many projects like mine have you

completed in the past year?• May I have a list of references for projects

you’ve completed which are similar to mine?• Will we need a permit for this project?

A qualified professional will have noproblem answering these questions toyour satisfaction. If you get vague orincomplete answers, or the contractor isdifficult to communicate with, do nothire that remodeler.

SURFING THE NETThe Internet has opened up a whole newway for customers to shop for goods andservices, and the remodeling industry isno exception. Many homeowners use theWeb to locate remodeling contractorsand review entire portfolios of their workfrom the comfort of their living room. And more and more contractors view awell-designed Website as a critical mar-keting tool.

“We get a lot of calls from people whohave visited our Website,” says Testa. “Wehave six different kitchen projects postedand potential customers can see the widevariety of designs we have done.”

“A good Website gives the homeownera good idea of the contractor’s capabili-ties,” says Testa. “We’ve had an extensive

site for five years and once a potential cus-tomer goes through it, he or she knowswhat our company is about and whatkind of work we do,” he says. “It actuallyhelps us qualify potential customers.”

CHECK REFERENCESOnce you’ve narrowed your search andbelieve you’ve located the right contrac-tor, ask for a list of references. Moreimportantly, follow up with them.

“Don’t be afraid to ask a contractoryou are considering hiring for a list ofsatisfied customers,” Testa says. “We pro-vide a long list of past customers andencourage potential customers to callthem, and in many cases, visit the job.”

According to Donnelly, you should askfor more than two or three references.“Anyone can give you two or three,” hesays. “And they should be jobs recentlycompleted, preferably in the last year.”

Be sure to take a look at completedjobs. Most contractors are more thanhappy to show you their work. If not inperson, visit the contractor’s Website orask to see the firm’s portfolio. Most con-tractors have “before and after” photosthey will be glad to show you.

Here’s a list of questions to ask a con-

tractor’s previous customers:• Could you communicate well with the

remodeler?• Were you pleased with the quality of work?• Were you satisfied with the way your

contractor conducted business?• Did the work crew show up on time?• Was the job completed on schedule?• Did the contractor stay in touch throughout

the project?• Was the jobsite kept neat?• How was the contractor on follow-up?• Did you have any problems with call-backs?• Would you use the contractor again

without hesitation?

ESTABLISHING RAPPORTBuell, Dervin, Donnelly, and Testa allagree that hiring a contractor with whomyou are comfortable and feel you cantrust is the most important factor in thesuccess of a remodeling job. A remodel-ing project can take anywhere from threeto six months, or more, and you’ll have tobe around that contractor every day.

“The better you can communicate, thebetter the job goes,” says Dervin. “Youhave to be able to share ideas, ask ques-tions and even disagree once in a while ifyou want the best project possible.”

“There has to be good chemistrybetween you and your contractor,” Testasays. “You need to feel like you can com-municate and have your questions andconcerns addressed,” he says. “It goesback to trust.”

“When you are interviewing the con-tractor, ask yourself if he or she is some-one you would be comfortable workingwith,” Buell says. “Your personalitiesneed to match and you need to feel youcan trust each other.”

“In my opinion, if you have any doubtabout being able to trust your remodeler, there is no reason to have them on thejob,” Donnelly comments. “Withouttrust, the job cannot be successful.”

SELECTING A PREFERRED SUPPLIERVERSUS COMPETITIVE BIDDING It is perfectly fine to select a contractor ofchoice without taking bids. If you’ve doneyour due diligence, called the referrals, looked at finished work, and you have con-cluded a particular contractor is right foryour job, don’t be afraid to hire that firm.

“When you get three to five bids, youare opening the door for shortcuts,” Testasays. “Bidders may not be bidding on thesame thing. They may not be specifyingthe same quality materials.

“When we are hired for a remodelingjob, we take the customer through thedesign process, including material specifi-cation, so the homeowner is ultimately set-ting the project scope and budget,” he says.

If you have not done your homework, whether you bid the job or not, there is agood chance you will regret your choice,”Donnelly says. “Price is one of the manycategories a homeowner should consid-er,” he comments. “Experience, capabili-ty, and quality are others that make up asuccessful project.”

A FINAL THOUGHTRemember, you and your contractor arereally tackling your remodeling job aspartners. By taking the time to choose theright person for the job, you’re assured ofgetting a remodeler that’s committed tomaking your project a success.

Ron and Carey Paniccia purchasedtheir home a year-and-a-half-agowith plans to remodel the lower

level themselves. A “high” ranch, thehome had a finished upstairs, but thelower level had two unfinished roomsand a small bath that needed work.

“We searched for the right home for thelongest time,” Ron says. “When we foundthis house we knew it was a bit of ahandyman’s special, but we felt we coulddo the work ourselves.”

Ron started ripping out paneling, wallpa-per and carpeting. Before he could completemuch of the project, Ron and Carey wereexpecting their baby daughter and Ron’sfather suffered a serious illness. Between hisresponsibilities as a FDNY lieutenant andhis need to spend time with his new daugh-ter and ill father, Ron found himself unableto finish the renovation project.

HELP ON THE WAYWith their renovation project stalled,Carey decided to write a note to theNBCNY program “George to theRescue” asking for help finishing theirproject. Soon, show host GeorgeOliphant and his “Rescue Crew”were on their way. A team includingNARI NYC/LI member Babylon BayConstruction and local designer JillVegas were soon working on a plan tofinish the Paniccias’ lower level.

“We quickly came up with a plan toopen up the main space to create a wide-open living area and to upgrade the bath-room,” says A.J. Shupack, owner ofBabylon Bay. “But first we had to com-pletely gut the space including removingseveral walls.”

One of the project’s challenges wasreplacing a load bearing wall with loadbearing columns that would be part ofthe design. Ultimately, the living areawas split to include a family space andspace for a photo studio.

“I left my job to have our daughterand, having modeled a little, had gotteninto photography,” Carey says. “So Iasked if we could convert some of the

space into a studio.” To meet her needs, the team painted one wall black andinstalled her photography lights onbooms so that portion of the space couldbe quickly converted when Carey wasshooting photos.

Carey describes the family space as“contemporary eclectic.” It features abeige sectional couch, a hanging chair, big pillows and a canvas wall featuringfamily photos.

“The new bathroom is just beautiful,”she says. With teal blue glass tile high-lighting the design, the effect is stunning.Fixtures are white and the glass showerfeatures a rain-type shower head. A pock-et door completes the room’s economicaldesign.

A QUICK TIMELINEImpressively, the renovation was com-pleted in the television show’s two-weektimeline. “Everyone on the project reallyworked hard to meet the schedule,”Shupack says. “You are talking aboutdemolition, framing, drywall, plumbing, electric, painting decorating and more in a compressed timeframe.” Shupack credits donations from Kleet Lumber,

Call Me Electric, L & J Plumbing, TileCreations, Lowes, Kohler and others forhelp with the construction process.

Help and funding also came fromNBC and a variety of other vendors. Not to mention some of Ron’s friendsfrom the FDNY and a childhood friendwho works for NYPD. Without theirhelp, the remodel would not have suc-ceeded.

A WORD OF THANKS“Getting this project done for our familymeans the world to us,” Carey stresses. “Idon’t think we could have done it our-selves. The idea that there were so manypeople willing to help gives you a warmfeeling inside. It is so incredible whatpeople will do for others without expect-ing anything in return. We are veryappreciative,” she says.

Located in Patchogue, NY, Island Kitchens & Baths is one of theleading remodelers on Long Island. Specializing in kitchen, bathroom, home office and entertainment unit design, installationand remodeling, Island Kitchens & Baths combines innovativedesign capabilities with superior products to transform your existing space into a room fit for living, a room fit for you.

Charles A. Testa, CKD, CBD, owner and president, brings years of knowledge and experience in the home improvement industry to each and every one of his dynamic kitchen and bath creations. He began his career as a carpentry contractor specializing in homerenovations and eventually introduced his skills and creativity intothe designing of unique kitchens and baths.

“The goal of every project is to create a kitchen or bathroomdesign that’s personalized to the customer’s needs and budget,”says Testa. “Utmost priority is given to functionality,” he says. “For instance, a kitchen is supposed to be a workplace first.”

“While function is a key element in all of our designs, creativityand color are important factors as well,” Testa says. “For a design tobe successful, the homeowner must really enjoy being in the room.”

High-quality products are hallmarks of every Island Kitchens & Baths project. “We work with America’s leading kitchen and bathroom manufacturers to offer you cabinetry, countertops and plumbingproducts that transcend common design boundaries,” says Testa.

“The use of superior products is crucial to design success and customer happiness with the end result.”

His fusion of creative design and functionality has been applaudedby more than happy clients. Here is what a few had to say:

“At the onset of our remodel, we had many questions and a fewideas. Charlie helped us focus on a design that is both functionaland visually pleasing. His attention to detail was of paramountimportance, and it is manifestly evident in the result.”

“A great professional kitchen designer is as important as a goodarchitect. An architect may create the overall space, but a good kitchendesigner is needed to sculpt the layout, design and aesthetics of thetrue ‘heart’ of the home... the kitchen. Charlie Testa did exactly that.”

“Quality was foremost on our minds from the beginning of theproject. Your professional approach gave us the confidence the jobwas going to be done right. The fit and finish of the cabinets, andthe total look and functionality that was achieved is exactly whatwe had hoped you would accomplish for us, and you came throughwith flying colors.”

Island Kitchens & Baths has received NARI NYC/LI CotY awards foroutstanding kitchen & bath design/remodeling in 2001, 2002, 2003,2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, Regional CotY awards 2005,2007, 2010 and 2011, and National CotY awards 2005 and 2011.

When Lisa Scansarole decidedto redo the deck on the backof her home, she hoped to

create an atmosphere reminiscent of abeach-side oasis complete with a tikibar.

“I wanted a place where I could enter-tain guests that would remind them ofbeing at the beach,” she says. “So Iwanted an area where we could sit in thesun on a nice day, sit around a fire on abeautiful evening, or retire to a coveredbar area for shade or to get out of theweather.”

With those ideas in mind, a friendreferred her to Doug Dervin, CR, CLRand president, of Double D Contractorsin Hicksville, NY. Together, they cameup with a design that matched her visionand set about building her beach-themedretreat.

“Lisa had a clear idea of what shewanted, which she shared with us, andthen we took it from there,” says Dervin.“Her old deck was coming apart, so weneeded to really beef up its structure andrebuild it from there,” he comments.

Page 40: NewYork Fall 2011

Double D used AZEK decking for thesurface of the new deck, creating a rela-tively large 20’ x 30’ structure that sitsapproximately 20 inches off the ground.AZEK is a cellular PVC decking materi-al that is stain, scratch and split resistant. One of the deck’s stunning design fea-tures is a series of circular steps goingdown into the yard which required theDouble D team to work at bending theAZEK material.

The centerpiece of the uncovered por-tion of the deck is a circular stone fire pit.Like the campfire ring of lore, it is a greatplace for Lisa’s guests to gather aroundand chat with one another. A nice curvedseating area sits opposite the fire pit. AndLisa has added several comfortable patiochairs.

The covered bar area is surrounded byexterior stone walls and vinyl siding. Thebar top and countertops are made ofmatching granite. Pendant lighting and aceiling fan provide ambiance in theevening.

The bar, which seats four, also featuresa built in barbeque, a wine cooler and arefrigerator to keep drinks cool. Withplenty of storage space built-in, it pro-vides a great place for entertaining.

Importantly, Lisa loves the way hernew deck turned out. “The deck cameout just like I had pictured it in mymind,” she comments. “I’ve alwayswanted a space where people could comeover and be totally relaxed and enter-tained and this is perfect. “

Tired of painting, staining or sealing your old wooden deck? Sick ofreplacing warped, split or insect damaged boards? If so, there are a wide variety of alternative decking materials on the market. They are

all practically maintenance-free and are easy to install.

VINYL DECKING Made of 100% recycled PVC compounds, vinyl decking likeAZEK is a very popular no-maintenance alternative decking material. Virtuallymaintenance free, it eliminates the need for annual repairs and waterproofing.

Available in a wide variety of colors, soap and water is all that is required tokeep vinyl decking looking good. It can also be considered an environmentally-friendly material.

COMPOSITE DECKING Composite means two or more distinct, structurally complementary substances are combined to create a product with superior structural or functional properties. In the case of composite decking, the primarycomponents are most often a plastic and wood fiber.

Products like TimberTeck and Trex often take on the natural beauty of wood, but leaves behind all the rotting and splintering. Easy to maintain, composite decking options include not only the ability to physically bend and shape, but also a variety of colors and textures from which to choose.

STONE DECKING Stone, brick or composite tiles are very strong and are also a low-maintenance alternative to wood decking. While stone and brick options arelabor intensive, stone composites like Deckstone or natural stone with a composite backing like StoneDeck are strong, fireproof and easy to install.
